Task 2 – Performance Strengths and Areas for Improvement

Page 2: Unit 27 task 2 referral

Strength 1/4• Excellence Trait: Knowing offensive patterns• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse: This is an advantage to Rob as

at this level there is little room for error, therefore if he doesn’t correctly know his teams offensive plays this can reduce efficiency as it can lead to either loss of possession or losing out on a try scoring opportunity. The moves and patterns are stored in his long term memory therefore he can sub consciously recall these moves with ease therefore when performing these moves Rob can promptly alter his positioning and movement according to the moves called. This is also a benefit to his team as they can run these offensive plays smoothly. I think this is a vital part to Robs play as knowing these offensive patterns is the fundamentals needed at this level before looking at other traits

Critically Analyse: Give your opinion of the subject of interest – consider all of the evidence and then write about both the advantages and disadvantages

Strength 2/4• Excellence Trait: Maintaining aggression• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse: This is advantage

to Rob as aggression is any behavior intended to harm another individual by physical or verbal. In the game Rob is assertive, most commonly in rugby aggression comes from frustration-aggression when Robs goal is blocked. Being able to maintain this aggression stops Rob from letting aggression become hostile and affecting his play e.g. Having a physical fight and getting sent off. I think this is important to Robs play as aggression is a vital part to rugby due to the nature of the game (physical), Rob doesn’t let his frustration lead to aggression this is positive as it leads to him having catharsis.

Strength 3/4• Excellence Trait: Concentration • Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse: Concentration is the ability to stay

focused and be fully aware, what's going on around you. Having the ability to stay concentrated throughout the whole 80 minutes at this level gives Rob the ability to be alert and reach his optimum level allowing him to perform at the best level capable. I think this is important to Rob as it will reduce his and his teams efficiently as they will not be able to run offensive plays as Rob will not be concentrating and could lose his team possession.

• Being able to stay concentrated will allow Robs skills to be at his best and allowing him to maintain this skill set through out the whole game e.g. staying focused and ready to change from offensive set up to defensive set up quickly if the opposition turn the ball over also this will be an advantage as it may lead to him getting selected for higher honors e.g. divisional.

Strength 4/4• Excellence Trait: Power • Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse: Power is the ability to exert

maximal force over a short period of time. This is important to Rob as at this level the physical demands are high. Having power means Rob can be explosive on defensive ( when tackling ) and offensive ( bursting through tackles). I think Power is an advantage to Rob, as he is a centre breaking through tackles is vital to his offensive play. Having this power as a strength is beneficial to Rob as if he is seen to be able to use his power efficiently this can help as a factor when getting selected for higher honors. This power will benefit his team, as Rob is a centre he will crashing the ball up from set pieces being powerful will help him to brake the gain line and set up a good structure for the next phase of play. Power is affective to Robs team on defense as linking his power with technique will make him a efficient tackler.

Development Area 1/4• Excellence Trait: Flexibility• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:The range of movement

at/across/around a joint, not being very flexible is a disadvantage to Rob because not being mobile in his joints will put more strain on the body therefore he is more prone to injury, this is negative for Rob as at this level he cannot afford to have long term injuries as his performance will decrease this ay result in him dropping down a performance level and not progressing in his sport. If Rob isn't flexible and keeps being out with a injury he will not be able to be selected for higher honours as selectors will not be able to see him perform. This lack of flexibility will factors Robs defensive play when tackling as a decreased range of movement in his shoulder will stop him from being able to extend his arm when wrapping it round a opposition player who will be running at speed, if Rob had more flexibility he wouldn’t get injured in the tackle situation so often.

Development Area 2/4• Excellence Trait: Speed• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse: Moving the whole body part of

the body very quickly/in a short time. As Rob is a centre speed is a vital part to his play offensively and defensively, not having the required speed needed at this level may hinder Robs future performance as he may not progress onto the next level. He will need his speed when trying to evade players offensively and when trying to catch players defensively at this level not having this speed may also effective his team as Robs lack of speed can result in losing out on try scoring opportunities or lead to the opposition scoring. Robs speed can begin to affect his teams performance as the team may have to alter tactics/ set plays to compensate for the lack of speed. E.g. having to change a offensive play as Rob cannot keep up play if a line break is made.

Development Area 3/4• Excellence Trait: Agility• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse: The ability of the body to

change direction quickly and efficiently. This is a disadvantage to Rob not being agile as he will need agility to evade opposition defenders. I think agility is important to Rob at his level of performance as his agility is the difference between him braking the gain line and not being an effective centre. Rob will need to factor agility into his play as a centre when offensively trying to evade contact and create the best opportunities for him and his team mates. At Robs level being able to be agile in the one vs. one tackle situation will help him when getting selected for higher honors as it will show he dominates offensively when making metres .

Development Area 4/4• Excellence Trait: Control of anxiety • Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse: Rob will need to control

his anxiety, if he becomes to anxious his performance will decrease, this will have an effect on his team mates as his decrease in performance could lead to him being substituted or making a game losing decision. This also can effect is progression onto a higher level as he may become anxious when being watching by a coach. Robs anxious behavior will alter his judgment therefore stopping him from making the correct decision, with this anxiety he will not be able to get into the Optimum zone of functioning which at this level he needs to be in to perform well and impact the game.
