Leader BIBLE STUDY

Only a few days had passed since Jesus was arrested, beaten, and crucified. His followers were undoubtedly afraid and confused. They met together in a house, locking the doors because they were afraid of the Jews. Would the Jews do to them what they had done to Jesus? They had believed that Jesus was the Messiah, but they had abandoned Him and Jesus was killed. How could He save anyone if He was dead?

1But now some people were reporting that Jesus was alive! Could it be true? The disciples were talking about these things when Jesus stood among them. They thought they were seeing a ghost.

“Peace to you!” He said. What good news. Imagine how Jesus’ words might have calmed the disciples’ anxious hearts. Their Lord, whom they had deserted, didn’t show up to scold them for their failures or shame them for their lack of faith. He spoke peace to them.

Even though Jesus had foretold His death and resurrection (Matt. 20:17-19), Jesus showed His disciples physical proof that He was alive. He showed them His hands and His side. With His resurrection, Jesus’ mission was accomplished. He paid the debt for sinners, and the transaction cleared. But the disciples’ work was just beginning.

Jesus gave His followers a job to do: “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). This verse contains the Gospel of John’s version of the Great Commission. Jesus, the One sent from the Father, sent the disciples to be His messengers and representatives. Jesus equipped the disciples with the Holy Spirit to proclaim the gospel—the good news of what Jesus has done—to the world.

Emphasize to the kids you teach that Jesus is alive today. We haven’t seen Him for ourselves, but we believe this by faith. He sends out all believers to tell others about Him, and He gives us power through the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Appeared to the DisciplesLuke 24:36-49; John 20:19-23

On the first day of the week, in the evening, the disciples gathered together in a house. They locked the doors because they were afraid of the Jews. They didn’t want to be killed like Jesus had been killed.

But wait … Jesus had appeared to two disciples on the road, and Mary Magdalene had reported seeing Him alive too. Could it be true?

As the disciples talked, Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”

The disciples were afraid! They couldn’t believe their eyes! Was this really Jesus? The disciples thought they were seeing a ghost.

“Why are you afraid? It’s Me! Why do you doubt?” Jesus said. “Look at Me and touch Me. A ghost does not have flesh and bones, but I do. I’m not a ghost.”

Jesus showed His disciples His hands and His side. They saw the holes in His hands and in His side. Jesus was alive? It seemed too good to be true. The disciples rejoiced because they were so happy to see Jesus!

The disciples gave Jesus some fish to eat. Jesus talked to them and explained the Bible to them. “The Bible is about Me,” Jesus said. He helped them understand how the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms told about Him. Then Jesus told the disciples that they had a job to do. Jesus had died and was raised from the dead so that people could be forgiven for their sins. The disciples needed to tell other people to repent from their sin and be forgiven.

“Peace to you!” Jesus said to them again. “God sent Me

Bible Storytelling Tips

• Set the scene: Create a house’s perimeter with large blocks or masking tape on the floor. Gather kids inside the “house” and pretend to lock the door. Tell the story.

• Use emotions: Tell the story. Pause from time to time and ask kids to show you how they might have felt if they had been there with Jesus’ friends. Would they feel afraid? Amazed? Happy? Joyful? Determined?

to earth, and in the same way, I am sending you.” Jesus sent out the disciples to be His witnesses and to tell all the people that He is alive.

Christ Connection: For 40 days, Jesus presented Himself to at least 500 people and proved that He is alive. (1 Corinthians 15:3-8) Jesus is still alive today. He sends out believers to tell others about Him and gives us power through the Holy Spirit.

GRETA • Aw, that’s so nice of you to say. I’m nervous though. I don’t think I want to run.

MAGGIE • Well, yeah, of course. But don’t worry! Everyone loves you. They’ll be happy to see you running. In fact, I know just the Bible story to distract you. It’s about an important leader making a brief appearance too!

GRETA • Really?MAGGIE • Yep. I think You’ll love this story. As you listen to

it, keep our big picture question in mind. It will help you focus on the important parts of the story.

GRETA • Well, what is the big picture question?MAGGIE • What is our mission as believers?GRETA • That’s easy, our mission is to be good and obey

God and stuff.MAGGIE • Well, in some ways you are on the right track,

but why don’t you wait until after the story before submitting your final answer?

GRETA • OK, if you say so.

Giant timeline (1 min.)

MAGGIE • So, we have been talking at church about Jesus and just got done learning about His death and resurrection. He paid the penalty for our sins and came back to life to show that He defeated death once and for all. We learned about some of the first people to see Jesus alive again, but so far we haven’t heard what happened when the rest of His disciples saw Him.

GRETA • So what’s the story today?MAGGIE • Today’s story is called “Jesus Appeared to the

Disciples.”

Jesus’ disciples were afraid! I think I often take Jesus’ resurrection for granted because I’ve heard about it so many times. His followers didn’t know if it was true or not! They heard rumors about it, but they didn’t know if it had actually happened.

MAGGIE • You’re right. Even though Jesus had told them many times before His crucifixion that He would be killed and rise again, they were still afraid when He showed up in their locked room. They even thought He might be a ghost!

GRETA • After Jesus appeared to His disciples, He taught them about the ways the Scriptures are about Him. That’s so cool, because that’s what we are learning in church too!

MAGGIE • So that brings us back to our question: What is our mission as believers?

GRETA • Well, Jesus said that He wanted His disciples to tell other people about Him and what the Bible says about Him—that He died for sin and was raised to life again.

MAGGIE • Exactly! But Jesus also told them to wait until the Holy Spirit came to give them power. What is our mission as believers? Our mission as believers is to make disciples of all nations by the power of the Spirit..

Christ connectionMAGGIE • You see, our mission as believers hasn’t changed

since the mission Jesus gave His disciples so long ago! When we have faith in Jesus, we get the Holy Spirit in us to give us God’s power, and we are called to go out and tell others about Him! Jesus proved that He is alive by appearing in front of many different people over a 40-day period after the resurrection.

Tip: Consider using your Bible and the gospel poster provided to explain to kids how to become a Christian. Anytime you invite kids to respond in a large group setting, make sure you have counselors available to speak with kids individually to answer questions.

The importance of His resurrection is that it showed He paid for sin and defeated death. That’s the good news we are called to proclaim.

GRETA • I see what you mean. Jesus wants the whole world to know about Him and glorify Him, and He sent us out with the task of carrying His message to the world. We are born sinners, but when Jesus saves us and makes us new, our mission is to tell others about Him. He even sends the Holy Spirit to help us obey.

Group demonstration (5 min.)

MAGGIE • I love how Jesus says, “As the Father sent Me, so I am sending you.” It’s such a good reminder that we are not sent out alone, but with the same power God sent Jesus with.

GRETA • I have an idea to help explain this!Open a book so that it lays flat on the table. Use the center valley where the pages tuck into the binding as a sort of “track.” Place two of the three marbles in the “track,” keeping the third in reserve.

Discuss with the kids the power Jesus had and where it came from. Then, flick the third marble into the two sitting on the “track.” The middle marble will remain still and the momentum will transfer through it to the marble on the other side, which will shoot away from the row. Consider repeating the demonstration using more intermediate marbles; the momentum will still be transferred to the last marble. GRETA • In a way, the marble that we flicked at the first

two stationary marbles is like the power of God. It flowed through one marble and into the other, which was shot out.

MAGGIE • God sent Jesus to earth to demonstrate God’s power to us and then die on the cross for our sins.

After He rose again, His power—God’s power—was transferred through Him and into His disciples, who were sent out. We’ll learn more in future weeks about when the source of this power came, but this is a great way to imagine what it looks like to be sent by Jesus as Jesus was sent by God.

GRETA • Exactly! Just as the moving marble gave momentum to other marble, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to give us power!

Review (4 min.)

MAGGIE • I think it’s time for some review questions.GRETA • OK! I’ve got a pretty good memory, so let’s see if

the kids can answer.1. Why did the disciples keep their door locked?

(They were afraid the Jews might kill them as they killed Jesus, John 20:19)

2. What did Jesus say to them when He first appeared? (“Peace to you,” John 20:19)

3. How did the disciples react to Jesus’ appearing? (They were afraid and thought He was a ghost, Luke 24:37)

4. What did Jesus do to reassure them? (He showed them His hands and feet and invited them to touch Him to see He had flesh, Luke 24:39)

5. What did Jesus promise them? (power from God on high, Luke 24:39)

6. What is our mission as believers? Our mission as believers is to make disciples of all nations by the power of the Spirit..

MAGGIE • Good job on that review! You did amazingly well.

Key passage (5 min.)

GRETA • I actually just remembered a great passage to help us remember what we learn about the mission Jesus gave us.

MAGGIE • Really? You should share it with us.Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 and encourage the kids to read along in their Bibles. Display the key passage poster for kids to read. Then sing the key passage song.GRETA • That verse was written by the apostle Paul to

a group of Christians living in Corinth. Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write those words to remind people the essential parts of the gospel: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and was raised on the third day, just as the Old Testament prophecies said. Paul passed it to the Corinthians so they could pass it on to others. What is our mission as believers? Our mission as believers is to make disciples of all nations by the power of the Spirit..

Group game (5–10 min.)

CLOTHED WITH POWER

MAGGIE • Let’s continue the fun with a game!GRETA • I love games!Form two teams of kids. Instruct each team to line up on one side of the room. Give each team a set of oversized clothing. When you say go, the first player on each team will have to put on all the clothing items (pants, shirt, coat, and shoes) and run to the other side of the room.

When the players arrive at the far side of the room, they will take off the oversized clothing, leave it, and run back. The next player will run to the clothing, put it on, and run back to the start to take it off.GRETA • That was fun! But, what did that have to do with

MAGGIE • Great question! There are some translations of Scripture that describe having the Holy Spirit as being “clothed with power.” When we think about the mission Jesus gave His disciples, we can imagine being covered in power from God.

GRETA • Interesting! That’s a great way to think about it.

Show the missions video “Missionary Jobs.”GRETA • Wow, I had no idea missionaries could be so many

different things.MAGGIE • That’s right. Being a missionary means you live

The Gospel: God’s Plan for MeAsk kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids.

God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean.

We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23)

God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It’s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9.

Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God’s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18.

We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He’s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus.

Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. Provide I’m a Christian Now for new Christians to take home and complete with their families.
