John’s ministry began when God’s word came to him, and he began preaching near the Jordan River. John worked to get the people ready for the coming of Jesus, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy, “A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness” (Isa. 40:3). John called the people to repent of their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River. John also instructed the people on right living. (See Luke 3:10-14.) Some of the people suspected that John might be the Messiah, but John insisted, “One is coming who is more powerful than I” (Luke 3:16). Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized by John at the Jordan River. Wait a second. John was calling people to a baptism of repentance. We know Jesus never sinned (see Heb. 4:15; 2 Cor. 5:21), so why did Jesus come to be baptized? John was right when he said, “I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?” (Matt. 3:14). Commentators’ ideas vary about why Jesus was baptized. Perhaps He was affirming John’s work. Maybe He was identifying with sinners or showing them how they would be saved—through His death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus answered John, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matt. 3:15). As you teach, allow time for kids to ask questions. Emphasize that baptism is not what saves us; baptism is a way we show that we have been saved. INTRODUCE THE SESSION (3 MINUTES)[Large Group Leader enters wearing a cardigan, gray wig, and thick glasses. He or she sits in the

chair on stage.]LEADER • Hello again, children. As always, it is a pleasure to have you join me here today. I was

just talking to my daughter about baptism. Her son, my grandson, has recently trusted Jesus, and now he is getting ready to be baptized. My daughter and I were laughing about the time her younger brother tried to baptize the family cat after seeing her baptism. Goodness, I can’t believe that was almost 30 years ago!

Anyway, it got me thinking about the story of Jesus’ baptism. I’d like to share it with you all today.

GIANT TIMELINE (1 MINUTE) Leader • Last week we talked about Jesus as a boy who stayed behind at the temple. We learned

that Jesus came to earth to do His Father’s plan. The week before that, we talked about Jesus’ birth and the miraculous way God announced it with angels and a bright star. We learned that Jesus was born to be God’s promised Savior. Who can remember back three weeks? We learned that God chose Mary to be Jesus’ mother, but His Father is God. The very first week we met, I told you all about Jesus’ family line. We learned that Jesus’ family included Abraham, David, and others. Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s Old Testament promises. This week, our story is called “Jesus Was Baptized.”

BIG PICTURE QUESTION (2 MINUTES)Leader • Remember our big picture question, What makes Jesus different? We know the answer is

that Jesus is fully God and fully man. We have been looking at many stories from Jesus’ life to see the ways that is proven true in God’s Word.

John the Baptist lived in the wilderness. He wore camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. John began telling the people around him, “Repent and be baptized, for God’s kingdom is almost here.”

Some people asked John, “Who are you?”John said, “I am not the Messiah.” John also said he wasn’t Elijah, and he wasn’t the Prophet

that God had promised to send after Moses. “Who are you, then?” the people asked.John said that he was the person Isaiah the prophet was talking about when he said, “There is

someone shouting in the wilderness. He says, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight!’ ”John was born with a very important job. He was supposed to get people ready for Jesus, God’s

promised Messiah.People started to repent; they turned away from their sins and turned to God for

forgiveness. Then John baptized them in the Jordan River. Baptism was a picture that the people’s sins had been washed away.

John preached: “Someone more powerful than I will come after me. I am not worthy to bend down and untie His sandals.” Then John said, “I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

By this time, Jesus was an adult. He was in Galilee, and He left to see John the Baptist at the Jordan River. When John saw Jesus, he said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Jesus told John that He wanted to be baptized. But John didn’t think he should baptize Jesus, and he tried to stop Jesus.

“I need You to baptize me,” John said. “Why do You want me to baptize You?” John was confused. He baptized people who confessed their sins; Jesus never sinned!

Jesus said, “Allow Me to be baptized. God says this is right.” So John agreed, and he baptized Jesus.

Jesus immediately came up out of the water. Suddenly, the heavens opened for Jesus, and He saw the Holy Spirit coming down on Him. The Spirit was like a dove. And a voice came from heaven. “This is My Son,” the voice said. “I love Him, and I am very pleased with Him!”

Christ Connection: Jesus never sinned, but He obeyed God and was baptized like sinners are baptized. Baptism reminds us of Jesus’ death and resurrection. It reminds us that when we trust in Jesus, we turn from sin and start a new life—a life lived for Jesus.

TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY (1 MINUTE)Leader • We talked about Mary’s cousin Elizabeth. Who remembers what her son was named?

[Allow responses.] That’s right, his name was John. That little boy grew up to be John the Baptist, who spent his time telling the people to prepare for Jesus. When people confessed and turned away from sin, John would dip them into water—an event we call baptism—to symbolize God washing away their sin.

When Jesus showed up and asked John to baptize Him, John did not understand. He knew that Jesus was perfect and had no sins to repent of! John even thought that Jesus should baptize him instead! But God’s plan included Jesus being baptized, and Jesus obeyed God by being baptized.

After Jesus was baptized, something amazing happened. God made a special announcement from heaven. He said, “This is My Son, and I love Him.” Then the Holy Spirit came down from heav-en and rested on Jesus! No baptism before then or since has been like that one! What makes Jesus different? Jesus is fully God and fully man. Jesus didn’t need to be baptized to show that He was turning away from sin because Jesus never sinned! Instead, God wanted Jesus to be baptized to show the world that Jesus is God’s Son and that we should follow Jesus’ example.

Bible Storytelling Tips

• Dress like John: Ask a small group leader to dress like John as you tell the story. He should dress in a fur robe with a leather belt and wear a beard. Provide a jar of honey for him to hold.

• Demonstrate baptism: At the end of the story, use a person figure in a tub of water to show how a person is baptized.

CHRIST CONNECTION Leader • You see, baptism is a symbol of the gospel. Baptism is a way God wants believers to show the

world what Jesus did for us by dying on the cross, being buried, and rising again three days later. When a believer goes into the water, it represents the old version of him or her—the version

that is dead because of sin—being buried. When the person is raised back out of the water, it represents the way Jesus brings us to life when we have faith in Him. Because Jesus died for our sins and was raised again, we can die to sin and receive new life through Jesus.

Jesus never did anything wrong, but He was baptized like sinners are baptized. Baptism reminds us that Jesus died and came back to life. People who know and love Jesus should be baptized too, to show that we have come back to life with Jesus.

KEY PASSAGE (4 MINUTES)Show the key passage poster. Lead boys and girls to read together 1 Timothy 1:15. Cover the poster and call on volunteers to say the verse from memory. Leader • Jesus never sinned. His baptism was not a

symbol that He turned away from sin, but that He would die and be raised to life to pay for sin. Our key passage helps us remember that Jesus came to save sinners. When believers are baptized, it shows that our old, dead selves have been buried with Christ and raised to life with Him.

SALVATION MESSAGEBaptism isn’t just about getting in the water and being dunked. Baptism is a serious part of taking your first steps as a Christ follower. It’s admitting your need forgiveness of your sins –all of them - the lies, jealousy, cheating, anger, unforgiveness – every last sin needs to be forgiven because every one of them creates a separation between us and God. It means that we want others to know what we believe, that Jesus died for our sins, took the punishment so we don’t have to then rose again to life three days later. it also means that we listen and obey God, that we don’t try to be in charge of our lives, but that we trust God to show us what to do. If you’ve wanted to begin your first steps in being a Christ follower, you can pray this prayer, quietly in your head to God behind me: God, I know I sin and I ask you to forgive me. Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus to die for me and to be raised to life! I ask you to take charge of my life and to be my Lord and my Leader, to fill me with your Spirit and guide me each day. Amen*If you’ve prayed this for the first time, tell your small group leader because we are going to want to celebrate this with you!*

PRAYERLeader • Father, You are good. We praise You for Your grace and mercy to us. We confess that we sin

against You and thank You that Jesus never sinned and that He died for our sin. Thank You for giving us baptism as a way to show the world what You did for us. Amen.

SALVATION MESSAGE & COMMITMENT CARDSToday we talked about how Jesus was baptized because He knew God wanted Him to do it, not because he needed forgiveness of sin – He was perfect. We also know that God wants us to be baptized. We pray and ask for Jesus to forgive us our sins, then because we want others to know that we have chosen to follow God, we then can be baptized. Baptism is all about letting other people see that we have made a decision for Christ -it’s not to brag, but to hopefully have them become excited about learning more about God, Jesus and then one day making the decision to follow Jesus.Today, in large group you were asked if you wanted to become a Christ follower and pray to follow God. There may be some of you here that are still learning and you may have more questions to ask -that’s great, it’s a big decision and you need to understand, so keep coming to church and asking your questions. Some of you may have been learning this stuff for a while and already have prayed – that’s great and you only have to pray that ONE time, not over and over because God will always keep His promise to keep you close to Him. It may be that today was your first time you’ve prayed this prayer and you really are ready to make the choice to follow Jesus and you understand he has to take your sins away. We have a sheet for each of you to fill out. Do not look at what your neighbor is writing, because your decision is about being comfortable

As kids arrive, ask them if they know what baptism means. Ask if they have been baptized.Say • Baptism is a special event in the life of a believer. Today we will learn about a baptism that was

different from all other baptisms. Who do you think might have an extra special baptism?

ACTIVITY PAGE (5 MINUTES) Invite kids to complete the “Dip and Dunk” activity page. Kids will use crayons or markers to draw water in each of the pictures that should have water.Say • Baptism uses water as a symbol, or picture, of the new life Christians receive through Christ.

In our story today, we will hear about the time Jesus was baptized. Jesus lived a perfectly obedient life. Why do you think Jesus was baptized?

with what you know.Everyone will 1. Fill out your name and grade (wait for kids to do this)2. Check on box that describes where you are:

1. You already prayed this on a different day 2. This was your first time praying and you’re ready to follow Jesus or 3. You’re still learning and have questions.

3. ONLY CHECK ONE BOX – if children have checked more than one, please ask them to clarify and fix the sheet. You should talk to Every child about his/her sheet.

JOURNAL AND PRAYER (5 MINUTES)Distribute journal pages and pencils. Instruct kids to imagine someone who has never heard of baptism

before. Encourage them to write how they would describe baptism and what it means.Say • Jesus obeyed God by being baptized. His baptism was an example for us, but it also pointed to

what He was going to do. Jesus died on the cross for our sins. On the third day, He rose from the dead! When we are baptized, we show that we have trusted in Jesus—dying to ourselves and our sinful ways and being raised up to live a new life for Him. Let’s pray.

Dear God, thank You for giving us baptism so we have a way to show the world the beauty of Your salvation. Thank You, Jesus, for identifying with us and being baptized even though You didn’t have to. Most importantly, thank You for what baptism represents. You rescue us from sin and death and raise us up to new life. We love You. Amen.

THE GOSPEL: GOD’S PLAN FOR ME Use Scripture and the guide provided in the classroom to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, leader, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.

The gospel is the good news, the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use these prompts to share the gospel with your kids.

GOD RULES.Ask: “Who is in charge at home?” Explain that because God created everything, He is in charge of everything. Read Revelation 4:11.

WE SINNED.Ask: “Have you ever done something wrong?” Tell kids that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin separates us from God. Read Romans 3:23.

GOD PROVIDED.Explain that God is holy and must punish sin. God sent His Son, Jesus, to take the punishment we deserve.Read John 3:16.

JESUS GIVES.Ask: “What is the best gift you’ve ever received?” Say that Jesus took our punishment for sin by giving His life, and He gives us His righteousness. God sees us as if we lived the perfect life Jesus lived. This is the best gift ever! Read 2 Corinthians 5:21.

WE RESPOND.Explain that everyone has a choice to make. Ask: “Will you trust Jesus as your Savior and Lord? You can turn from self and sin and turn to Jesus.” Read Romans 10:9-10.
