Message from the President Greetings All, In this, my last letter as president of your unit, I'm happy to remind you of our special holiday party and to give thanks and praise to our hard-working board of directors. Remember to mark December 8 for our free holiday party at the Richardson Civic Center. Lunch will be served at 12:00 p.m. and play will begin at 1:00 p.m. There is no charge for this event, but (isn't there always a but) we do ask for donations in any amount to support the North Texas Food Bank – cash or checks (checks should be made out to North Texas Food Bank). The number of participants has grown every year (last year we had 88 tables!!), so it's very im-portant that you sign up if you plan to attend, since there is a finite amount of room at the civic center. Sign up at your local club or email [email protected]. Please sign up only once. I have truly enjoyed my time on the board as your president and that was made possible by our fabulous board members – Rich Branderburg, Joe Gill, Mary Jane McGinnis, Scott Nason, Stu Nelan, Robbie Ogle, Jim Rider and Martha Young. Whenever there was a job to be done, multiple hands shot up. It was won-derful having an “I'll do it” board. Thank you all more than I can say. As always, I urge you to call me or one of our board members if you have questions, suggestions or con-cerns. That is our reason for being – to help you and help make our fabulous game as great as it can be. See you at the bridge table. ~Eileen Davidoff

I have been married to my husband, Mike, for 34 years. I am blessed to be the mom of three happy, healthy children. Now, I am a proud Nana and Great Nana! For 15 years, while my children were in school, I was an active member in the Plano PTA, where I earned a Life Member award. I served as Treasurer, Secretary, and multiple other chairman positions. Simultaneously, I taught Sunday school and was director of my church's AWANA program. I also served for five years on the Plano Police Depart-

ment Crime Prevention Board. Since 2008, I have worked with Mike in our CPA firm.

It was Mike who introduced me to bridge five years ago. He would come home after playing, saying things like "We made a slam" or "We had a 60% game" and I had no clue what he was talking about. But, I knew he was having much too much fun without me! So, I took lessons and now I am having fun, too! I love that Mike and I play together. I love meeting new people and the friendships I have made. I love trav-eling to tournaments. I love the competition. But mostly, I love the game. So, I would consider it an honor to serve on the Board and represent my fellow bridge players.

Candidates for the 2020 Unit 176 Board ~ Vote for three at the Jan. Election Sectional

Amy Downing recently moved back to the Dallas area where she is the Accounting Manager for an auto transport company. Born in El Paso, she and her mother ran a successful bridge club. Amy started playing bridge at the age of 13, was a certified di-rector at 14, and tournament chair of an El Paso regional and several sectionals by age 18. Amy lived in the Dallas area from 1979 to 1989 moving to Memphis to care for her mother. In Memphis, she met her now husband, Michael Schreiber, and from him real-ly learned the game of bridge. Amy and Michael are happy to be back in Texas and are excited about joining Unit 176.

Joe Gill For the last 3 years I have been a board member and my primary job has been to send the e-mail blasts to our unit members, so all of you know me, at least in that respect. I have come to appreciate just how much effort is involved in all the activi-ties performed by the board for the benefit of our unit’s bridge players.

Like many of us, I “learned” bridge in high school and college, but then work and life interfered and I didn’t play much for about 30 years, starting again with “lunch bridge” at work, which led to a few club games and local tournaments. My participation in-creased in 2005, after I had retired from a telecommunications company as a software

designer. This second time at bridge I “re-learned” the game, and have discovered the learning bridge pro-cess doesn’t stop.

I have enjoyed contributing to the board, especially communicating with our members, and would be honored to continue this function as a board member.

Bob Holliday Bob is out of the country so his Bio is not available for this Table Talk issue.

Jim Rider I was a pilot for American Airlines for 31 years; retired in 2004. I gradu-ated from Kent State University with a degree in history and joined the Air Force where I was a pilot for 5 years, serving in the Vietnam War. After a 40-year hiatus from bridge, I began playing again at the end of 2014. In addi-tion to bridge, I enjoy traveling and playing golf. I have two children and three grandchil-dren who keep me busy. It has been my honor to serve on the unit board for the past 2 years. I feel as though I now understand my role and feel if given the opportunity I can continue to be an asset

to the board. My biggest contribution was co-chairing the Unit’s first I/N Regional this past year with my wife Cheryl.

Nina Watkins New is my favorite word at this time of my life. I am new to dupli-cate and new to the club where I play. My introduction to bridge came after retiring from my 34-year career in education in 2002. I worked as a teacher, principal and Cen-ter staff administrator. I continued to work as an adjunct professor for TWU, supervis-ing student teacher for another 3 years. At the insistence of a friend, I started playing party bridge. Party bridge was where I learned to play. So many mistakes were made! Fortunately, I had a wonderful group of ladies who were patient and taught me to be a better player. Learning continues with the help of my duplicate partner. I would love to be part of the Unit Board and help pass the excitement of the game to new players while helping our unit grow.

We’re going digital with District 16 Scorecard:

Recall that Scorecard is a bi-monthly publication for District 16, of which our unit is a member. The first few pages have district news and most of the rest has news from specific units and advertisements. We have been given the option of receiving Scorecard in digital form and have elected to take that option. This will result in a significant savings to the unit since our costs for Scorecard are a notable part of our budget. In addition to saving money, there are certain ad-vantages to going digital. For an example, look at the latest scorecard by clicking on

http://www.d16acbl.org/Scorecard/1903.pdf (This may take 9 or 10 seconds to load.) Note that using the bar at the top, you can change the font and picture size as desired. (“ctrl +” and “ctrl –“ also achieve this.) With most browsers, to search for text you just type “ctrl f” and a box will appear where you can type the text to search. This enables a fast way to find out about specific events or individu-als without having to read or scan through the entire document. Give it a try. ~Joe Gill
