After high school, the majority of students go on to college. Undergraduate studies lead to a bachelor’s degree, which is generally what Americans mean when they speak of a “college diploma.” The bachelor’s degree can be followed by professional studies and graduate studies, which lead to master’s and doctoral degrees. American public schools are free and open to all at the elementary and secondary level (high school), but public universities charge tuition and have competitive entrance requirements.

The more you learn, the more you earn,” said the pop singer Cyndi Lauper as she accepted her high school diploma — at the age of 35! Going to college, either full-time or part-time, is naturally becoming the next step after high school. Today, more than half of American high school graduates enroll in college. But recent high school graduates no longer dominate the college campuses. Today, it is quite common for adults of all ages to come back to college either for career advancement or personal growth. By 1992, about half of all American college students will be older than 25, and 20% of them will be over 35. Serving this great variety of people are about 3,400 colleges and universities enrolling more than 12 million students.

American faith in the value of education is shown by the rising number of Americans who have at least a bachelor’s degree. About 20% of Americans are college graduates. In the U.S.A., a college education is not viewed as a privilege reserved for the wealthy or the academically talented. Almost everyone who wants to attend college can do so.

An International Student John is an international student who has come to the United States to study engineering. He is failing physics and calculus and getting a D in chemistry. He has an A in literature and an A in music. His college adviser has asked him to come in to talk to him. When they meet, John explains that he studies very hard, but he just can’t seem to get good grades in his science and math courses. His adviser suggests that he change his major, but John says that he can’t do that. He must study to become an engineer.

He asks John why he thinks he has done so well in literature and music. John smiles and says he has always enjoyed reading and that he plays the saxophone, the trumpet, and the piano. John promises to do better next semester. His adviser explains that if he doesn’t improve his grades next semester, he will flunk out of school. Listening Scripts American schools tend to put more emphasis on developing critical thinking skills than they do on acquiring quantities of facts. American students are encouraged to express their own opinions in class and think for themselves, a reflection of the American values of individual freedom and self-reliance. The goal of the American education system is to teach children how to learn and to help them reach their maximum potential.

Unit 1

The Americans’ definition of success is largely one of acquiring wealth and a high material standard of living. It is not surprising therefore, that Americans value education for its monetary value. The belief is widespread in the United States that the more schooling people have, the more money they will earn when they leave school. The belief is strongest regarding the desirability of an undergraduate degree, or a professional degree such as medicine or law, following the undergraduate degree. The money value of graduate degrees in “nonprofessional” fields such as art, history, or philosophy is not as great.

In recent years, there has been a change in the job market in the United States. In the past, it was possible to get a high-paying factory job without a college education. Increasingly, however, the advent of new technologies has meant that more and more education is required to do the work. Many of the new jobs in the United States either require a college education, even a graduate degree, or they are low-paying jobs in the service sector of the economy, such as fast-food restaurants, small stores, and hotels.

In the United States, boys and girls start school when they are five years old. In some states they must stay in school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen years old when they graduate from secondary school. Another name for secondary school is high school. Most children go to public elementary and secondary schools. The parents of public school pupils do not have to pay directly for their children’s education because tax money supports the public schools. If a child attends a private school, his parents pay the school for the child’s education.

Unit 1

Today about half of the high school graduates go on to colleges and universities. Some colleges and universities receive tax money from the government. A student at a state university does not have to pay very much if his parents live in that state. Private colleges and universities are expensive, however. Almost half of the college students in the United States work while they are studying. When a student’s family is not rich, he has to earn money for part of his college expenses.

A typical course consists of three classes per week for 15 weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester.
