How Game Trailers Are CreatedMost trailers have footage from the game to show people what the graphics is going to be like aswell as other features that the game has whereas some companies just use cinematic effects but no gameplay so people don’t know what to expect when the game is released. They tend to choose the best footage of the game possible without giving away too much and the people creating the trailer put these clips together and try and make it to its max potential but doesn’t necessarily work everytime. The marketing team are the ones who have to promote the game and work closely with the designers to produce the game trailers.

What is their purpose…The Purpose for companies bringing out trailers for there up cominggames is to bring in more fans/customers to buy their game and to show off what the game has to offer such as the features, graphics and the overall quality. All console games must have trailers and most of which should have a release date to let the people know when the game will be available. A lot of trailers out there are very convincing as the companies want you to buy there game, it’s often very helpful watching trailers if you can’t decide what to buy, although it can still be quite hard at times as many companies out the are very competitive if another game is being release around the same time for example EA try and improve on their trailer FIFA each year as much as they can as they are big company with high expectations and they have to compete with the likes of PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) created by Konami.

Where/how are they normally shownThe most common place trailers are shown are on TV and YouTube as millions of people world wide can see the trailer(s) and bring in more customers/fans. The main place where the games trailers get promoted is at places like GamesCom and E3 as the purpose for people visiting is for the games. They are shown in different ways such as the gameplay and cinematics or just about the games new features to pull in new fans that weren’t before or didn’t like the previous release of a certain game.

Are they targeted to particular audiences, gender, age ect…

All game trailers are directed to everyone but the people that are under aged. Even though most trailers are to intrigue the fans of a certain genre, the people developing the trailer are still trying to pull in new fans/customers to buy their game and get as big as possible. For games such as FIFA and Call Of Duty they’re not directed at a male audience but they don’t tend to attract females as much. There are many fans of both these series of games and they bring out a new game for the series every year so they have to try and improve on it as much as they can in that space of time, so to keep the fans happy they must show them in the trailers what they are capable of doing in their next release and why it is better. Because the games are such big sellers they have high expectation and if they don’t reach them then they will lose out on customers even if it is the quality of the trailer as no one would like what they’re seeing and not pre-order the game meaning the company would lose out on guaranteed sales.

Do they fit into certain genres or styles, can they be categorized…

All game trailers are categorized into to different groups based on the genre of the game such as First Person Shooters (FPS), Third Person Shooters, Sports, RPG’s, Strategy ect. Each trailer will be different to

each other and have their own qualities due to them competing against each other because even if the games are different genres, a few people only go for one game at a time so they might find it hard to choose between either an FPS or a Football game and may decide

based on the quality of the trailers and which one looks better.

Describe how you would go about designing a game trailer to include style of music track

When designing a game trailer I would try and show as much of the game as I could without giving away too much just to keep the customers thinking and want to see more rather them already knowing what to expect and decide to choose another game of the same genre because they have made their trailer more convincing. It would be important to let people know the specific features that the other competitors don’t have and to have more advanced graphics to give players a better overall experience. Its not just these things that make the trailer important but the style of music may play a big part for giving the right feel to the game for example giving it a more dramatic sound on key moments rather than just a song throughout the trailer without giving an effect on any of it, therefore making it quite dull. For example I thought that the Little Big Planet 2 trailer was big success as it had shown how good its new features were and had perfect music to go with it.
