Supplemental Materials

About the Bible Presuppositions (those things we believe beforehand, that which we assume as we face facts or explore new understandings; prior beliefs that shape our understanding of the evidence)

The Bible is the Word of God; it is inspired, “God-breathed.” (2 Timothy 3:16) The Bible is of Divine Origin. (2 Peter 1:19-21) Through the Bible, God speaks to us today. (John 20:30-31) The entire Bible points to Jesus Christ. (Luke 24:43-47) The Bible shows how we can have eternal life. (2 Tim 3:15)

Basic Facts about the Bible:

The entire Bible is divided into: o Two main sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament; o 66 Books (39 books of the Old Testament; 27 books of the New Testament); o 1,189 Chapters; o 23,214 Verses; o 773,692 Words

These various divisions will help you find your way around the Bible. For example, if someone

were to ask you to find Romans 6:23, you would turn to the sixth chapter of the book of Romans and look for the twenty-third verse.

ROMANS 6: 23 (Book) (Chapter) (Verse)

The Bible was written over a period of approximately 1500 years. o The first book, Genesis, was probably written around 1400 B.C., over 3000 years ago. o The last book, Revelation, was completed around 90 A.D.

Old Testament - The 39 books of the Old Testament were written between 1400 B.C. and 400

B.C. They tell the story of God’s chosen people and contain predictions about the coming of the Savior (“Messiah”). Originally, these books were written in the Hebrew language, and were divided into three sections or types:

o “The LAW” - These 5 books tell the story of God’s working in history from the Creations of the universe through the Exodus and wanderings of Israel. (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy)

o “The PROPHETS” - These include 6 historical books (Joshua, Judges, I & II Samuel, I & II Kings) and 15 books containing mostly sermons written by other prophets. (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi)

Page 6: UNIT 1: Knowing & Experiencing God - Clover Sites

Abundant Life – 101 Bible Study

Celebrating, Living, and Sharing the Abundant Life of Jesus St. John Lutheran Church - 6 - Cypress, Texas

o “The WRITINGS” - These 13 books include history, poetry and wise sayings. (Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, I & II Chronicles, Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther)

New Testament - All 27 books of the New Testament were written after the resurrection of Jesus. (ca. 30 A.D.) In the New Testament we are told that God fulfilled what He promised in the Old Testament by sending Jesus Christ. The last book of the New Testament, Revelation, was completed by about 90 A.D. The New Testament was originally written in the Greek language. It is divided into 3 sections:

o “The GOSPELS” - These 4 books tell the story and teachings of Jesus Christ. They concentrate a great deal of attention on Jesus’ death and resurrection. Two of the Gospels were written by Jesus’ disciples (Matthew, John). One by a close friend of the disciple Peter (Mark), and the other by a physician and close friend of the Apostle Paul (Luke).

o “The ACTS” - This one book (Acts of the Apostles) was written by Luke and tells some of the exciting history of the early Christian Church.

o “The EPISTLES” - These Epistles (or letters) further explain what Christ has done for us as well as how to live the Christian life. Thirteen of them were written by Paul (Romans, I & II Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, I & II Thessalonians, I & II Timothy, Titus, Philemon). The author of Hebrews is unknown, while James and Jude were named after their authors. Peter wrote two of the Epistles (I & II Peter) and John wrote the final four (I, II & III John and Revelation).

How Do We Know about God? We can know there is a God through two means:

Natural Knowledge of God - e.g., by looking at the complexities of the universe; through our conscience; etc. All people possess this innate knowledge of a superior being (Romans 1:20).

Revealed Knowledge of God - i.e., what God tells us about Himself in the Bible. On what do we base our faith and beliefs? There are a variety of views on this question. They include:

1. The World’s View: Current Conventional Wisdom; Reason and/or feelings. 2. Roman Catholic View: Bible and tradition or the church (“The Church interprets the Scripture) 3. Some Other Christians: Bible and Reason or Bible and Feelings (“The individual interprets

Scripture”) 4. Lutheran Christians: Bible alone (“Scripture interprets Scripture”)

Why do Lutheran Christians believe that we should base our beliefs only on the Bible, and not on our reason or feelings?

Human reason and emotions are imperfect and can be deceived. The only completely trustworthy source of knowledge about God is God Himself.

1 Corinthians 1:21 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 2 Timothy 3:15 From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Is the Bible the Inspired Word of God?

By: Ron Carlson Dec 19th 2008 During a question and answer session at a recent speaking engagement, a university student asked me, "Why do you believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God?" Now this is a very interesting question; and probably one of the most important questions any Christian could ask themselves. What is so special, so unique about the Bible that Christians believe it is literally the inspired word of God? In answering this student's question, I encouraged him to consider the following facts about the Bible: First, the Bible is not just one single book. This is a more common misconception than many people realize, especially with people who do not come from a Judeo-Christian background. Rather than being a single book, the Bible is actually a collection of 66 books, which is called the canon of scriptures. These 66 books contain a variety of genres: history, poetry, prophecy, wisdom literature, letters, and apocalyptic just to name a few. Second, these 66 books were written by 40 different authors. These authors came from a variety of backgrounds: shepherds, fishermen, doctors, kings, prophets, and others. And most of these authors never knew one another personally. Third, these 66 books were written over a period of 1500 years. Yet again, this is another reminder that many of these authors never knew or collaborated with one another in writing these books. Fourth, the 66 books of the Bible were written in 3 different languages. In the Bible we have books that were written in the ancient languages of Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic; a reflection of the historical and cultural circumstances in which each of these books were written. And finally, these 66 books were written on 3 different continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. Once again, this is a testament to the varied historical and cultural circumstances of God's people. Think about the above realities: 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents. What's more, this collection of books shares a common storyline- the creation, fall, and redemption of God's people; a common theme- God's universal love for all of humanity; and a common message- salvation is available to all who repent of their sins and commit to following God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength. In addition to sharing these commonalities, these 66 books contain no historical errors or contradictions. God's word truly is an amazing collection of writings!

After I had shared the above facts with this student, I offered him the following challenge: I said to him, "If you do not believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, if you do not believe that the Bible is of a supernatural origin, then I challenge you to a test." I said to the student, "I challenge you to go to any library in the world; you can choose any library you like, and find 66 books which match the characteristics of the 66 books in the Bible. You must choose 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, written on 3 different continents. However, they must share a common storyline, a common theme, and a common message, with no historical errors or contradictions." I went on to say, "If you can produce such a collection of books, I will admit that the Bible is not the inspired word of God." The student's reply was almost instantaneous, he emphatically stated, "But that's impossible!" "But that's impossible!" It truly is impossible, for any collection of human writings... However, the Bible passes this test. The Bible contains 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents, with no historical errors or contradictions. The entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, bears the mark of Divine inspiration. The next time you encounter someone who asks you why you believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, try sharing this challenge with them. Better yet, don't wait until you're asked, just go ahead and share this challenge with a friend today. You don't even have to mention the Bible up front; just ask them if they think it would be realistic to assemble such a collection of books. After they say, "But that's impossible!" you've got a ready-made opportunity for sharing the truth of God's word with somebody!

UNIT 2: Right & Wrong, Good and Evil The Ten Commandments Law and Gospel The Fall Sin

The Ten Commandments Exodus 20:1-17

The Ten Commandments were given from within a context of __________ (Exodus 20:2). You shall have no other gods. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Honor your father and your mother You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Mark 12:28-31 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Romans 13:9-10 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Key: redemption

Law and Gospel The difference between Law and Gospel The Law does three things:

It curbs gross expressions of sin It serves as a mirror to show us our waywardness and failure to live as we should.

It guides us, showing us how to live God-pleasing lives as God’s people. Two kinds of sin: Original/inherited Actual Two manifestations of sin: Commission Omission

The Fall Bible Study

Genesis 3:1-15

Sin The All-encompassing Impact of Sin in the World and in Our Lives Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned. Romans 8:7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 1 Corinthians 2:14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins Romans 5:20-21 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21

so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

UNIT 3: God Reclaims the World and Human Hearts Redemption Jesus Christ The Holy Spirit, Conversion, & Faith Ephesians 1:3-10 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Note what this Bible verse says about God’s plan of salvation. Note, especially, verse 6. What does God want to be known for? What is his ultimate goal? In the face of our sin and rebellion against God, God did not give up on us, or abandon us. He had a plan to redeem us from before the foundation of the world. This was a plan that was from the very beginning to redeem and save us by his grace. The plan is revealed throughout the pages of the Old Testament and witnessed to in the accounts of Jesus’ life, suffering, death, and resurrection in the New Testament.

Redemption Genesis 3:15 [God says to Satan,] 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 53 Micah 5:2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.

Jesus Christ Bible Passages That Speak of Jesus’ Life, Teaching, Ministry, Suffering, Death, Burial and Resurrection The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2 The Suffering and Death of Jesus on the Cross Matthew 26:38-39 Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me." 39

And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." Matthew 27:28-46 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. 32 As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross. 33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews." 38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 "He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, 'I am the Son of God.’” 44 And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way. 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

John 19:28-30 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), "I thirst." 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Matthew 27:57-66 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

62 Next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, 'After three days I will rise.' 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the last fraud will be worse than the first."

65 Pilate said to them, "You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can." 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension Matthew 28:1-10 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.

5 But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you."

8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me."

Acts 1:3-11 To them he presented himself alive after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; 5

for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." Romans 8:34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Philippians 2:5-11 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Benefits of Jesus’ Death for Us Colossians 2:13-15 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

The Holy Spirit Jesus teaches us about the work of the Holy Spirit in John 14-16:

John 14:15-17 John 14:25-26 John 15:26-27 Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Conversion James 2:19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! John 16:5-15 [Jesus says,] 5 “But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Romans 1:16 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:3 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit. Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come." And let the one who hears say, "Come." And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. One of the great gifts of the Holy Spirit to the people of God is unity—a togetherness that is founded on our equal standing before God through his grace in Christ, our unique giftedness by the Holy Spirit for the sake of one another, and the one God we all worship. These are spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12; Romans 12; Ephesians 4, and… 1 Peter 4:10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:

Faith

Ephesians 2:8-10 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9

not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 3:12 In [Christ] we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. Hebrews 11:1-3, 6 1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. The Four “Quaker” Questions:

Where did you live when you were 10 years old? What were the winters like there? What did you use to heat your house? When did God become a warm personal being to you?

UNIT 4: Baptism A Sacrament is a sacred church rite having four features:

1. It has been instituted by God, (i.e., commanded by Christ). 2. There are certain visible elements which are... 3. Connected with God’s word. 4. A sacrament is a “means of grace” which offers the promise of forgiveness of sins through faith

in Christ.

The Meaning of the word “Baptize”

Mark 7:1-4 The Place of Baptism in the Gospel Message Acts 8:35-39 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?" 37 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.

Why Baptism Is Called a Sacrament? Origin of the term “Sacrament” Within the Lutheran Church, Baptism is commonly referred to as a “sacrament”. The use of this term is not intended to imply that Baptism is a type of magic ritual. In fact, the word sacramentum originally referred to the oath of allegiance made by a Roman soldier. Because early Christians renounced all idols and swore allegiance to Christ at their Baptism, the term, sacramentum was soon applied to Baptism. The same word was later applied to the Lord’s Supper. Definition of “Sacrament”

Today the term “sacrament” is used to refer to rites or ceremonies instituted by Christ. As Lutherans understand the term, a sacrament has four features: 1. It must have been instituted by God, i.e., commanded by Christ. 2. It must use a visible element(s). 3. It must connect those visible elements to God’s word. 4. It must offer the promise of forgiveness of sins through faith in Christ.

Page 21: UNIT 1: Knowing & Experiencing God - Clover Sites

Abundant Life – 101 Bible Study

Celebrating, Living, and Sharing the Abundant Life of Jesus St. John Lutheran Church - 21 - Cypress, Texas

Number of Sacraments By this definition, there are only two sacraments, namely Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The Roman Catholic Church mentions five others, but these lack one or more of the three features mentioned above.

Baptism is a Sacrament

Baptism is properly called a sacrament because it has all four of the features mentioned earlier. 1. Baptism was commanded by Christ (Matthew 28:19). 2. Baptism uses a visible element, namely WATER. 3. Baptism connects the water to the word of God, “…in the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:18-20). 4. In baptism God offers forgiveness of sins, life and salvation through faith in Christ (Acts 2:38; 1

Peter 3:21).

How is Baptism to Be Administered? The Bible never states what method should be used in baptism. The Greek word for “baptize” used

in the Bible means “to wash.” In baptism, the important factor is the water, not the method of application.

Baptism must be done in the name of the Triune God.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).”

Ephesians 4:4-5 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5

one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Who is to be Baptized?

According to Jesus, “all nations” are to be baptized. God wants all people to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

1 Timothy 2:3-4 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Infants also are to be baptized. They are also included in “all nations.” In addition, the following

passages also stress that children are included in the command to baptize.

Acts 2:38-39 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39

For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself." Acts 16:33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.

Colossians 2:11-12 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.

In the New Testament, baptism replaces circumcision as the seal of God’s Promise.

Circumcision was done on the eighth day of a boy’s life.

Luke 18:15-17 Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it."

Infants are also sinners and in need of forgiveness. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Celebrating, Living, and Sharing the Abundant Life of Jesus St. John Lutheran Church - 23 - Cypress, Texas

Even in Judaism at the time of Christ, infants were baptized when their parents accepted the Jewish faith. This was called “Proselyte baptism.”

Baptism of children is to be accompanied by Christian training and instruction. This is primarily the duty of the parents.

Matthew 28:19-20 [Jesus says,] “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

What Does Baptism Do?

Through baptism we are buried with Christ so that we may now live new lives for Him (Romans 6:4). The Bible teaches that in infant baptism:

Our sins are forgiven. Acts 2:38

We are saved. 1 Peter 3:21; Titus 3:5

We are given a new birth. John 3:5

We have put on Christ. Galatians 3:26-27

Our sins are washed away. Acts 22:16

How Can Water Do These Things?

By itself, water cannot do these things. But in baptism, God’s Word is connected with water. His Word has the power to change lives. Through the Water and Word He offers all that Jesus Christ earned for us by His death and resurrection. Faith receives this gift of God.

Can a person be saved without baptism? It is by faith that we are saved. A believer who dies before baptism is saved (Luke 23:39-43). It is the unbeliever who is condemned.

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

What happens to infants who die without baptism? The Bible does not deal with this question. God has not bound Himself in these cases. We can simply rely on His love and mercy.

UNIT 5: The Lord’s Supper Introduction: The Sacrament of the Altar, Eucharist, the Lord’s Table, the Breaking of Bread... The account of Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper is recorded in

Matthew 26:26-30 (also found in Mark 14:22-26)

Luke 22:13-22 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!"

1 Corinthians 11:17-33

The second of two “sacraments” of the Lutheran Church is the Lord’s Supper. As was mentioned in Session 3, a sacrament is defined as a rite having four features:

1. Instituted by God, (i.e., commanded by Christ)

2. A visible element(s)

3. These elements are connected with the word of God.

4. Offering the promise of forgiveness of sins through faith in Christ.

It is quite clear from the scriptures that the Lord’s Supper meets all of these conditions.

1. Jesus Christ Himself instituted this celebration (Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:14-23)

2. The Lord’s Supper uses the visible elements of bread and wine.

3. The bread and wine are connected with God’s word (“given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins”).

4. The Lord’s Supper offers the promise of forgiveness of sins through faith. (Matthew 26:28)

Old Testament Background:

Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper during the Jewish feast of Passover (Luke 22:15). The Passover festival was a celebration and reminder of the fact that God had saved His chosen people from death by plague in Egypt some 1500 years earlier.

Understanding the Passover celebration (Seder) will help you to understand the Lord’s Supper better. Exodus 11-12 tells the story of the first Passover. Note the similarities between the Passover and the Lord’s Supper.

Old

1. The Israelites were in bondage in Egypt.

2. Plagues hit the land; the tenth would bring death to all of the firstborn.

3. The blood of the Passover lamb saved the Israelites.

4. God gave them the Promised Land after the Exodus.

New

1. We were in bondage to sin.

2. Our destiny was death.

3. We were saved by Christ’s offering of Himself on the Cross.

4. We are promised Eternal Life.

According to the Bible, we receive Christ’s body and blood in the Lord’s Supper. Matthew 26:26-28 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

On the basis of Scripture Lutherans confess that in some (mysterious, supernatural) manner in the Lord’s Supper we receive both bread and wine as well as Christ’s body and blood in the Lord’s Supper. We call this “Sacramental eating and drinking.” It’s not merely spiritual, nor is it corporal. Martin Luther says it this way:

Martin Luther says that the Lord’s Supper is “the true body and blood of Jesus Christ under bread and wine, instituted by Christ for us Christians to eat and drink.”

- Small Catechism

The Personalized Gospel: In the Lord’s Supper Christ personally assures us that He offered Himself for us as individuals.

Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

In the Lord’s Supper the following things take place:

Forgiveness - We receive forgiveness of our sins when we believe in the words of Jesus, “Given and shed for you.”

Fortification - In the Lord’s Supper we are reminded that we have eternal life because of what Christ has done for us. Our faith is strengthened (fortified) as a result.

Fellowship - We have fellowship with other Christians who believe the same as we believe. Foretelling - In the Lord’s Supper we are not only reminded of Christ’s death, but we proclaim

our faith in His death and resurrection as well as His second coming.

1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

The Need for Self-examination:

Many people state that they do not feel “worthy” to receive the Lord’s Supper. Often this is the result of a misunderstanding of God’s Word. The Lord’s Supper is not for perfect people, but for sinners who are in need of forgiveness.

Nonetheless, the Apostle Paul states that we are to “examine” ourselves before receiving the

Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. A communicant is one who recognizes and repents of his sins, believes in Christ, and seeks to yield his life to Him.

Because of the very real dangers of receiving the Lord’s Supper to one’s harm, the Lutheran Church practices “Close Communion.” Only those who have been properly instructed in the Christian faith and are able to examine themselves are permitted to receive Communion. Those who are living impenitent and unchristian lives are denied the Lord’s Supper.

A Brief Form of Self-examination:

Do you sincerely confess that you have sinned against almighty God and therefore deserve his wrath and punishment?

1 John 1:8 Romans 6:23 Ezekiel 18:4

Do you repent of all your sins committed in thought, word and deed?

Revelation 3:3 2 Corinthians 7:10 Acts 3:19

Do you believe that God, by grace, for Jesus’ sake, will forgive all of your sins? John 3:16 Ephesians 2:8-9 1 John 1:9

Do you promise that with the aid of the Holy Spirit you will amend your sinful life? Philippians 1:27 Matthew 5:16 Romans 6:13

Key Thoughts:

Faith does not __________ the body and blood of Jesus in the sacrament. Faith __________ Christ’s body and blood in the sacrament.

The grace of God comes to the communicant through the __________ and _________________ of God; it is received only by faith.

It is possible to receive the Lord’s Supper to one’s __________________ ________ if the communicant has not examined himself and receives the supper in an unworthy manner.

Worthiness consists in a __________________ heart.

Repentance involves ____________________ and __________.

Contrition: sorrow for sins, remorse for the pain we have caused God by our actions or failure to act

according to His will; and

Faith: a relationship of trust between God and a person. This relationship is established by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. This relationship is based on the promises of God in Jesus Christ for grace, mercy, love and forgiveness and eternal life. Faith is the relationship that is characterized by belief in God’s promises and the conviction of our place in the eyes of God because of God’s decision in our behalf.

The greatest act of worship is to ______________ God’s promises in Jesus Christ. This is made

possible when the word of God is preached and the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts by His grace and we believe the word and promise of God.
