Corynorhinus Townsendii
Initially I focused on images of Townsends Big Eared Bat. I was looking at its external
physical make-up and seeing what its definitive features were so both the bat species
and myself would be recognisable in the final design.
Apart from, as its name suggests, its magnificently
massive ears its know for the fleshy pouches that
grow either side of its nose and the membrane
between the its legs and tail used as a bug catching
net. I looked at the skeletal structure which really
influenced my first batch of thumbnails. The
extended length of the radius, metacarpals and
phalanges would serve as interesting play fodder for
the designing.
Not until Id finished the first batch and was running sparse of ideas did I read about the
bat and bat nature. This will influence how I position my design. The Natural History
Museums, The Secret life of Bats
(http://www.fathom.com/course/21701775/sessions.html) was the best influence.
Session 2 describes the bats structural make-up and how it all functions. Reading meant
I had to visualise its mechanisms which made them clearer in my mind. For example, in
the section on skulls it states all bats have the skull attached to the spine by special
vertebrae that enable them to bend their necks backwards. I then began to imagine
how that would affect the human structure. This along with their knees working in the
opposite direction too ours will serve as focuses to explore in my next batch of
thumbnails.

Thumbnails
The following thumbnails are the ones that are having a key influence on my approach
to a final design:-
- The ear takes the shapeof the bats but has the
folds and bumps of a
human ear
- The ears are anelongation of the human
ear and grow from the
side of the head (asopposed to taking over
the whole forehead, as
in earlier sketches).
- The final design will beof a midway point and
will depict the
disease/cancerous look
more them a perfect transformation.
- It will include the grotesque details of the bats puffy, fleshy cheeks.- One eye or both will remain my own. In doing my self portrait face studies I
found my distinguishing feature to be my heavily dark eyes against pale skin.

Textures and Colour Scheme
As the assignment is to produce a self-portrait, I need to include aspects that I feel
convey myself within the design. Along with having my physical features I want to
include my almost see-through skin and blonde hair. This will give me my colour
scheme.
Wikipedia describes the colours of the
bat as uniform: Its upperparts are
similar to dark brown on the back, and
wood-brown on the sides. The under
parts are a slightly paler shade of
brown. These bats can be identified bythe nearly uniform color of their bodies.
d's_big-eared_bat). I plan include this
shading on my design, darker colours
for the top and back with lighter
shading on the front.
The bat has a thick coating of fur on its body. This picture is the piece I created inPhotoshop classes where I got to create the textures on a 2-D image. The fur is really
effective so I want to include the hair on my design but the intensity to how much I do
so is best experimented with when
working on the final piece. My initial
thoughts are to continue the hair
around from the back and follow the
collar forming the fluffy maine as
seen in the picture.

Essay Concept
Question:
Analyse the human relationship with shape shifting, specifically the psychology behind
the anthropomorphosis and hybridisation of animals.
Intro:
This essay is to examine the human history with shape shifting and explore the
possibilities as to why it is so prominent across all cultures. The focus will be
specifically on the hybridisation of human with animal and investigate the reasons why
civilization bestows human attributes onto certain animals. As a species, humans
through-out history have invented stories of human-animal hybrids which have been
used as metaphors for the complex inner workings of the human psyche; but why the
compulsion to do so? To answer this question this essay will look at three areas:
- Religion Specifically in Ancient Greek mythology but covering Norse, Hindu andAncient Egyptian mythology.
- Fairy-tales Specifically in the stories that appear in multiple cultures.- Modern Uses Specifically in film and TV.

Nat: hey, i meant to swap numbers earlier so we could get going on the anatomy partner thing, heres
mine, 07546864038. Nat
Sammy: Sorry Facebook is being really rubbish at didn't tell me you'd messaged me (grr)
07890760435 is my number. I'm on Facebook pretty much all the time I'm at home.
My animal is Big-Eared Bat which sounds cool but it's going to be hard to avoid the vampire look and
create something new.
Whats your animal? Any initial thoughts and anything you want to avoid for you final design so I can help
keep a watch for you?
Also your lifedrawings are really incredible :) Were you working with charcoal or a charcoal pencil?
Nat: Haha ok, I wandered why you hadn't already replied. This is a link to last years painting
http://skygecko-nat.blogspot.com/2010/10/final-pose-update-5-and-finished.html?m=1but this yearI'm thinking realistic body horror, so that the direction I'd ideally like to head for. Mine is a common
earwig this time round. Thanks for the comment on my lifedrawing, it was just normal charcoal, you make
an interesting subject to draw actually lol
Sammy: Having an insect could really help with the body horror aspect because it's body makeup is so
different. no skeleton. so fusing that with the human structure going to be interesting. For body horror do
you mean the sort of unrecognisable creature we see at the end of The Fly (80's one). more sort of
cancerous creature?
I'm finding my trouble at the minute is how similar the bat skeleton is to human. not allowing for much
change. But some cool sketches coming through anyway.
I think ive only ever worked with cheap charcoal so it fell apart and coloured more of me then the paper
:/ i may risk it next tuesday though. I like to see how other people view me. I came from doing acting so it
was sort of important to know what i was displaying to an audience. Was my cunning way to learn about
everyone more by being a subject. If that makes sense. :/
Off to make tea and sketch now... exiting times lol
Sammy: I have NO IDEA why but I can't comment on my own Blog... I'll try and figure it out but heres the
response I wrote.
'I like the human bat ear concept. It follows through the rest of the thumbnails after it and works. Fig. 23
was inspired by one of my research pictures (of a vampire bat). Wanted to look at having the teeth
involved but my bat only have little teeth. At the moment I won't limit myself to a genre/style. My naturalstyle is cartoony (as you can see) but I'd be interested to see how I'd fare in more graphic sketches.
Thanks for the comment :)'
Nat: Hahaha yeah blogger can be annoying like that for no apparent reason :) ive started the thumbnails
but getting a start of the essay done before I'll post any of those, ill keep an eye put for your next bunch
though :)
Sammy: Damn blogger and its comments _
Love the thumbnails, very detailed so its easy to see what your intention was. Figure 8 great hat. More
to the point... figure 6 still have a good sense of yourself in it; can see your face changing and the distress,
same with 20. I can see this muscle texture in a few; are you looking at the muscle formation during the
transformation or intend to involve bare muscle in your final piece? Could be really interesting becauseall the gory bits us humans hide behind our fleshy masks seem to be visible on insects. The figures I like

the most are the unsymmetrical ones, where the legs and bits thatare growing arent copies on the other
side, like in thumbnails 30-36. Looks more like loss of control of the body, rather that turning into the
animal the animal is forcing its way through you. The thing that interests me the most on insects, and
what Im looking forward to seeing with yours and our fellow peeps with insects, is how they handle the
exoskeleton. Whether thats the hardening of the flesh or a human bone structure forming on the outsideor something else. The hardened flesh could look really interesting textually and the bone one visually.
But in all, you said you wanted to go for body horror and I think youre on the right path for that. Defiantlygrotesque :)
Blogger Comments
Nat: (on First batch of thumbnails, Sammys Blog) Ok, some nice ideas here. In no particular order, I
like where Fig. 10 is going with the non-symmetry. The idea in Fig. 14 to make the ear human creased but
bat form is a nice one, an interesting mix. Fig. 15 is a good path to gruesome :) I'll look forward to seeing
what thumbnails you get to with that. That said, I think Fig. 23 is in the direction of gruesome but it is also
looking quite vampire-ish, perhaps that is the symmetry I'm not sure. Also, Figures 3 & 4 I think are quite
cute. I know you don't want the vampire look, but any thoughts on which direction you would like to go
with? Body Horror? Cute cartoony? Realistic but not scary? what kind of thing? Or are you still
experimenting until you decide on that bit?

Nat: hey how are your creation ideas coming along? I read Phils comment suggesting to use the internal
anatomy as your start point, have you looked at the muscle structures?
Nat:ok cool, Ill look forward to seeing what you have come up with, then see what feedback I can give
you. Have you incorporated things such as behaviour into your thumbnails? For example an urge to hang
upside-down in your location? Last year when I had the frog, the skeleton was pretty similar too but I got
the two skeletons and layered them on top of each other, then picked out between the two to make a new
skeleton, have you tried that? Even with the small differences its still a good path to see what comes out
Nat: cool thanks. I think your blogger likes being retarded- sorry. Lol. Not sure if your saw but I managed
to take some photos of earwigs myself at last I found some! Anyway, with these I can see how they are
transparent in some areas and how they look shiny in other and almost slimy but they arent. Im going to
do some Photoshop painting tests either tonight or tomorrow so your opinion on those would be
appreciated, Ill let you know though have you put any more stuff on your blog yet for me to check out?
Sammy: Yeh I saw the photos, the translucent thing could be really interesting to explore.. would expose
the insides. Ill keep an eye out for the photoshopness. Im working on my essay intro at the moment. But
Ill post my anatomy sketches and life drawings up today
