Naming Acids

Page 2: Unit 1 – Day 6 Naming Acids. Acids Acids are ionic compounds where hydrogen is the positive ion. All acids must be dissolved in water to have acidic properties.

Acids

• Acids are ionic compounds where hydrogen is the positive ion.

• All acids must be dissolved in water to have acidic properties (corrosive, etc).

• They can bond with non-metals to make binary acids.

• They can bond with polyatomics to make oxy acids.

Binary Acids

• Binary acids involve bonding hydrogen ionically with a non-metal.

• They are named using a pattern.– Hydro______________ic acid

• Examples:• HCl – Hydrochloric acid• H2S – Hydrosulfuric acid

Oxy Acids

• Oxy acids involve bonding hydrogen ionically with a polyatomic ion.

• They are called oxy acids because the polyatomic ion contains oxygen.

• They are named using a pattern.– _____________________ic acid

• Examples:• HClO3 – Chloric Acid

• HNO3 – Nitric Acid

Writing Formulas for Acids

• Acids are ionic, so the criss cross rule applies.• Hydrogen always has a charge of +1.• The negative ion’s charge must be looked up.

• Example: Sulfuric acid.

• H SO4+1 -2
