Lesson 1:

Scientists use branching keys to identify unknown plants or animals.

A key is a series of questions, each with two possible answers.

The answers lead you to next question or will identify the unknown

organism.

Three steps for using branching keys:

1- Take one organism at a time.

2- Start with the first question and go through the other following

questions for that organism only.

3- After you identify the first organism start over with the next one.

When you were a baby?

Living organisms produce young that look like them but are

much smaller.

These young will grow to become adults that look like their

parents.

In order to become adults, the young should go through

many stages of life.

A life cycle describes all the stages in a living organism’s

development. A life cycle has no beginning and no end. It

goes around and around like a bicycle wheel.

A New human life starts when a baby is born.

The adult father and adult mother mate and give birth to a

baby that will then grow to become a child.

A few years later the child will become a juvenile.

The juvenile grows to be an adult that can mate, a new life

cycle starts.

Meanwhile, the mother and father grow old with time and

will eventually die.
