REPRESENTATION: THE DESCENT

A04 | ZMINA HAWTHORNE

Juno – antagonist. She has the most power within in the group and manages to abuse her power by having an affair with Sarah’s husband and leading the group on the wrong path throughout the cave and does things without the thought of consequence.

Rebecca – the oldest, mother type who tries her best to protect the rest of the group.

Sarah – the victim, her husband and daughter die in a car accident and she needs support from the rest of the group.

Beth – an English teacher; educated; Sarah’s support system who is only there to support her friend in something she feels she has to do.

Holly – the adrenaline junkie who is looking for something new that she’ll enjoy.

Sam – the youngest; a medical student, the most protected, because of this she feels that she needs to speak up and be confident.

In this screenshot from a scene in ‘The Descent’, the warm yellow color makes the scene seem warm and inviting. Also the characters costume being pajamas suggests to the viewer that the characters are comfortable and happy with their surroundings. The look of this photo is almost similar to the primary audience of The Descent – females between the ages of 15 and 25, this is so the primary audience can relate.

This picture differentiates from the picture above as the blue filter on the picture makes the characters look cold. The rain (added in post) is to give illusion that their vests are wet – this is directed at men as they will see them as sex symbols. Although, the looks on their faces suggest that they aren’t scared of anything which suggests the theme of female empowerment.

The screenshot is of Juno, one of the main characters and Sarah’s (another main character) husband Paul. From this screenshot, you can see that Juno has a seductive flirty character by the way she looks down at Paul’s hands and is controlling his actions. This also relates to how much power Juno has with the caving trip – the fact that it was her who found the cave but didn’t plan the caving trip properly. Also the fact that she kills Sarah’s support system, Beth.

This screenshot is taken of Sarah covered in blood, swinging her weapon around – this shows that she has been pushed to become like the thing that’s trying to kill her – the crawlers. This was caused by the fact that Juno killed Beth and that her husband was also having an affair with Paul, also with her daughter dying in the car accident it seems like she has nothing else to loose by the way she’s acting.
