Essential Question:
How can I identify fictional writing?
• Fiction - prose writing about (pretend) characters
• Non Fiction – prose writing that is true. Real people, places, objects or events.
• Poetry – prose writing that involves musical or figurative language
Fiction
Fiction has lesser genres such as:
• Novel• Short story• Fable• Folktale• Tall tale• Fantasy• Science fiction
Novel
• A fictional prose narrative of considerable length (long), typically having a plot and maybe even 2 themes.
One example would be
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Short Story
• Short stories are brief, or short
The Greyling is a short story we will read
Fable
• A brief story that has a moral, or a lesson to learn.
• The Three Little Pigs

Folktale
• Began being told oral a very long time ago (before there was paper)
• Passed down from generation to generation
• Anansi

• An improbable story (can not happen)

• Stories that talk about science or technology.
• Can be in the future.

The first time I went to the beach I smelled the salty air. I breathed in and let the wind blow through my hair. The sand on my feet felt so warm. I wanted to stay until the next dawn.
