A special hello to all reading this column, and trusting that every-one is looking forward to Spring with renewed hope and energy.

Village life continues unruf-fled with just a small hiccough now and then. The veld fire had us all nervously watching the flames and billowing smoke nearing the village.

Fortunately, the fire breaks cut at the beginning of winter pre-

vented the fire from reaching our gardens and homes.

(Hope the Guinea Fowl, Kiwiets and Egyptian Geese survive their charcoaled habitat). By now the first new green growth will be pushing through the black.

We are going to chat about a really debili-

tating condition which af-flicts many of us. The scourge of Gout. Gout is a disorder caused by an imbalance of uric acid in

the bloodstream. It is depos-ited as salts (urates) of acid in the joints, causing inflamma-tion and acute pain.

During an attack, colchicine is the preferred treatment which relieves both pain and inflam-mation. Colchicine has been used for gout since biblical times. It is a misconception to think that gout is linked to an overindulgence of rich food and excess alcohol. The label of "Rich Man's disease" has now been totally refuted, and it has been proved that dietary changes will only help mini-mally.

If you have the propensity, urate crystals will still continue forming in your body. A gout attack is due to these urate

EditorialWelcome to Spring and our September issue of the Olive Branch.

We bring you information about our new Frail Care Provider and the handover process that will be taking place over the next couple of months. There are also some snippets about a fun day trip to a game lodge complete with meals for a reasonable price - this will be something I am going to try for myself.

Also included is a story of a lucky escape by one of our villagers and his tips on what precautions we should take to ensure we remain safe at all times.

Do you enjoy crafting ? Read the article on our "crafty la-dies" for some more info and maybe you will find a group of friends with common in-terests and skills.

crystals building up in a joint. The body's immune systems perceives these crystals as for-eign bodies and attack the joint causing severe pain, redness, swelling & inflammation.

It is usually the "big toe", but any joint, as well as the kidneys, may be affected. Diabetes mel-litus, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are closely asso-ciated with high uric acid levels in the bloodstream. Recurrent attacks of gout indicate a chron-ic condition.

A small percentage of suf-ferers progress to Fulminant Gout. This is characterised by hard lumps of urate deposits in the joints called Tophi. These lumps begin to deform the joint much like arthritis. High levels of uric acid in the bloodstream, called Hyperuricema, cause a multitude of problems such as arthritis, joint destruction, se-vere muscular aches, kidney stones and other kidney disor-ders.

Unfortunately, a change to a healthier diet will not entirely rid one of the problem, but will be of general benefit.

Restrict red meat intake and processed carbohydrates, eat green vegetables, fruit and sal-ads. Reduce alcohol consump-tion and drink at least one litre of water daily.

Gout is a severe condition which needs medical attention. Prevention of future attacks is by means of medication that increases the excretion of waste salts or slows down their forma-tion e.g. Probeneciel and Al-lopurinol. Sufferers of gout will never be totally free of attacks, but the duration and severity can be controlled.

Well that's about all from me for now. Keep moving, keep healthy and loving life.

with any medical issue such as blood pressure measure-ment, blood glucose testing, wound treatment, chronic disease management, taking laboratory specimens, etc. She is responsible for overseeing medication administration in the Village.

The Village Sister reports daily to and advises the HOA or its representative of any concerns about any resident. Clinic visits are not billed but any consuma-bles are for the patient’s cost. Some consumables such as the Flu Vaccine may be covered by the patient’s medical aid.

She is also expected to perform regular visitations to residents, where she checks the availabil-ity of an evacuation plan, med-ical wallet containing medical history and personal contact details, a functioning panic button, and that a spare unit key is available under lock and key at the Care Centre, as well as monitoring personal hygiene and cleanliness of units.

Vulnerable residents may be visited more frequently. It is the responsibility of the Village Nurse to conduct health risk

assessments on new residents before occupation, to be re-peated annually, as well on re-newal of all leases for tenants; the outcome discussed with the ORV General Manager, the Nursing Services Manager and resident’s family.

She manages the clinical data system using a software pro-gram for residents/patients.

Extent of Assisted Living OfferedHome-Based Assisted Living is available if required, for activi-ties for daily living e.g. bathing, dressing, feeding, etc.

A carer will be appointed to as-sist residents in the village and will be charged accordingly at a rate per hour.

Extent of Medication ControlMedicines are locked away and managed by the Nursing Services Manager. All meds for frail care residents will be pre-packed by a pharmacist utilis-ing blister packaging.

This service is also available for Village Residents but will incur a monthly cost for the pre-packing and blister pack-aging. Daily administration of medication can be provided at an additional cost.

Treatment Room AvailabilityThis is available for the services of the Village Sister and the Doctor for appointments, and for medical procedures and emergency care. Residents’ confidential files are kept locked up here.

Nappy DisposalVillage Residents may dispose of nappies at the Care Centre but will incur a cost per kilogram.

Please contact the Nursing Services Manager in the Care Centre or the Village Nurse for further information.

The Craft Club, organised by the multi-talented Norma Acutt, meet every Thursday at 14:00 (2:00pm). The ladies who join the afternoon get-together are amongst the most cheerful, gregarious bunch in the village. People come

and go, join in and are welcomed into the "cir-cle".

Blankets and woollens are knitted for charity, but personal knitting and crocheting and any

other handwork is attacked with vigour. There are no lim-its at what one can do. Ronnie, a non-resident, has a wealth of crafty ideas that she shares with the ladies. Decorations for spe-cial occasions are ably made to adorn the tables in the dining room.

You are most welcome to join us any Thursday at 2 p.m. whether you can wield a pair of needles or not. Just come, have a cuppa and enjoy some lively chatter and good company.

We all have medical problems as we get older. I thought that I was well prepared for the unexpected but when I had need of help I discovered that I was not so well organised as I thought.

Here are a few things that I would have done differently:I was sitting in my Apartment when I started to feel faint but I had enough time to locate my emergency tag – which wasn’t quite where I thought I had left it!IN FUTURE I WILL WEAR IT WHILE I AM IN MY APARTMENTWhen I did finally fall over I was lucky enough to bounce off the bed onto the floor alongside. Almost immediately I started to feel cold but did not have the strength to pull any of the bedclothes on top of me.

IF YOU HAVE TIME TRY AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE WARM UNTIL HELP COMESLike most men I was sure that I would recover very soon with-out help and did nothing for a while. When I decided to call for help not only could I not find my emergency tag but my vision was so blurred I could barely use my cellphone to call for help.

DON’T TRY AND BE BRAVE – CALL FOR HELP STRAIGHTA-WAY – IF YOU CANI had a lot of time to think while lying helpless on the floor and realised that such things as the location of my will and the deeds to my flat were not well known and regardless of the legal side being well organised someone may have to turn the place upside down to find the right papers.

MAKE SURE SOMEONE IN THE FAMILY OR A CLOSE FRIEND KNOWS WHERE EVERYTHING IS.Hats off to our own security and frail care response teams and the hospital who operated on me twice within 12 hours.During convalescence I also had some other thoughts. The medical information on the back of my bedroom door was a great help but it obvious-ly went with me to the hospital and needed replacing – when I discovered that the medical history bits were very much out of date and have to be re-drafted. I have now also writ-ten ‘pacemaker’ all over it.

MAKE SURE THAT IF YOUR DOCTOR CHANGED YOUR MEDICATION THAT YOU IN TURN LET FRAIL CARE KNOW AND THAT YOU CHANGE THE INFORMATION HANGING BE-HIND YOUR DOOR.

A Precautionary tale

One of my favourite birds in our garden at Tamboti Bush Lodge is the Woodland Kingfisher. They winter in the Masai Mara and visit us in the Dinokeng Game Reserve between Octo-ber and April.

They very clearly announce their arrival in our area with a very loud prrrt sound that goes on and on and can almost drive you nuts. They are extremely beautiful birds, mainly a stun-ning azure colour. What really attracts me to these birds is their fearless nature. When they ar-rive in the garden it is almost as if the rest of the very noisy birds in the garden tone down their sounds in respect to this Kingfisher. They are also quite brutal and will have no hesita-tion in ejecting other birds and their chicks from a nesting hole

or log if they decide to make it their home.

As well as their very noisy prrrt sound hey also make a keee sound when attacked or attack-ing and it was this keee sound that caught my attention one Sunday afternoon. We had a group of Americans at Tam-boti Bush Lodge who were just finishing off their lunch in our restaurant when I heard a Woodland Kingfisher making the attack sound on the lawn. When I looked across the lawn there was this young Mozam-bican Spitting Cobra with its hood flared and facing a very angry Woodland Kingfisher that was attacking the cobra.

There were 22 Americans at the table and I said to them that this would be an ideal op-

portunity to get some photo shots of the cobra and that they should stand in a line facing the cobra. The cobra was facing away from the Americans as it was still dealing with the Wood-land Kingfisher. As soon as the group got about 3 metres from the cobra, it turned and faced them and they got stunning photos of the cobra all hooded up. Everyone was totally fo-cused on the cobra and no one saw the Woodland Kingfisher rocket across the lawn and hit the cobra behind its hood. The Kingfisher hit the cobra so hard that it went flying through the air towards the Americans. The Americans as one, went flying back to the restaurant. If gold medals were handed out for a 50 foot sprint all 22 would have won them. The Americans were all excitedly discussing

their imminent death by flying cobra and the cobra was lying flat out on the lawn wondering what the hell had happened and the Woodland Kingfisher had returned to his perch in the Tamboti tree and gazed at us as if to say “did you see that”?

I went and got my snake box and put the dazed cobra into the box. Then I noticed that the cobra had a few wounds on his body from the Kingfisher bites. Snakes are very suscepti-ble to infections so I dressed the wounds with antiseptic cream and then found a good safe place in the Tamboti forest to release him far from the vicious beak of our resident Wood-land Kingfisher before saying goodbye to a group of nervous, relieved and noisy American guests.

by Chris PenberthyDo you ever look up into the sky? It can be quite an awe-some experience - especially if a little way out from the city.

City skies tend to be a little washed out and show very few stars because of general pollu-tion - both smoggy pollution and light pollution. But head a short way out of civilisation and it is a whole new picture - suddenly there are a whole lot of extra stars that you never even suspected were there. Heading further out into the wilderness - say down into the Karoo and the sky is like velvet with a huge sprinkling of beau-tiful lights and you can easily see the fabulous Milky Way - our galaxy.

The Karoo is so unpolluted, that this is the site that was cho-sen to be home to our national observatory in Sutherland. This world class observatory is home to some 15 telescopes including one of the largest re-flecting telescopes in the world - SALT -the South African Large Telescope. Wending our way back to Jo'burg and on to ORV, we are presented with our less than optimum skies - so what can we see at night when we venture outdoors.

Well, you'd better dress warm-ly if you want to view the skies at this time of the year or else you'll be shivering so much that the sky will appear to be filled with satellites rather than stars. At this time of the year there are a couple of planets which stand out, even in smog infest-ed skies, in the early evenings. If you take a line across the sky from East to West - all the plan-ets visible to the naked eye will be on or near this line.

Let's start with Jupiter - king of the planets. If you are view-ing around about 7.00pm you

should see Ju-piter between a quarter and a third of the way up from the Western horizon. It is yellowish in colour - sort of buttery rather than bright yellow. In a moderate pair of binoculars, say 8 x 10, it will brighten up and show a definite disc as well as a faint amount of surface markings. Also, depending on their posi-tion, you may be able to see up to 4 of the Galilean moons. These are the 4 moons first seen by Galileo Galilei in 1610 when he turned his simple refracting telescope to Jupiter and some of the other planets. In order of distance from the planet, they are:-• Io–Themostvolcanicbody

in the Solar System.•Europa – An ice-covered

moon that is, surprisingly, the most likely abode of life besides Earth.

•Ganymede – The largestmoon in our Solar System.

•Callisto – The 3rd largestmoon in our Solar System and is thought to have a large sub-surface ocean about 300km down.

Of course, with a reasonable telescope you can see much more and with far greater de-tail, but we are talking about us ORV villagers most of whom are using our unaided vision. Jupiter sets at about 9:30pm at this time of the year.

Jupiter contains more mass than all of the other planets, asteroids and comets in the so-lar system, so as you can see, it is really quite huge.

Next we have Saturn, the most beautiful of all the planets in our solar system. You will find it a little Eastwards from straight up on that East/West line that I mentioned earlier.

It sets at about 2.00am at this time of the year. It's quite un-

inspiring when viewing with your naked

eyes, but with a pair of binocu-

lars of mod-erate size, you will already be able to see that there

is something different about

this planet. It appears misshapen

kind of lumpy on the sides. These lumps are all that we can make out, at low mag-nification, of the magnificent set of rings surrounding the second largest of our planets. It is hard to describe the feel-ings that you have when see-ing these rings in all their glory in a large telescope but as we

don't have one handy, I'll just insert an image I

f o u n d , for

you to judge for yourselves. Saturn too is a sort of buttery yellow in colour - not too dis-similar to Jupiter. Saturn has one of the largest moons in the Solar System, Titan, which has a thick atmosphere of meth-ane.

Coming inwards from the Gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, we sail on past the Asteroid Belt and arrive at Mars ( named for the Roman God of War ). Mars is the second smallest of the 8 planets in the Solar System and is currently a day-time planet rising in the East at about 06.00, so not too much to say there. But here's a pic-ture for you to view anyway. When Mars is visible in the night time sky it appears very red due to the large amount of Iron Oxide which is found on its surface. Mars has 2 moons which are prob-

ably captured Asteroids. We'll chat more about Mars in a fu-ture article.Venus - named for the Ro-man Goddess of beauty and love and is the brightest of all "stars" in the sky. She is known as both the Morning Star and the Evening Star, depending on which part of the sky she finds herself. Of course, Venus is not a star but the 2nd planet from the Sun and is also the closest of all planets to the Earth as she passes between ourselves and the sun in her orbit.

Venus is a bright but very bland object to view and it is actu-ally possible to see her during the day at certain times of the year. When you view Venus with a strong pair of binocu-lars, or by using a moderate telescope, you will see that she shows phases like the moon and we can never see her as a full disc except when she passes between ourselves and the Sun. We then see her as a black disc against the back-ground of a very bright sun. Venus has no moons. I won't include an image of Venus in this article, however, we will probably discuss this brightest of planets in a future article.

Some snippets of informa-tion before I sign off.

There is currently a search on the go for "Planet Nine" which

i s a very large planet suspected to orbit way out be-yond Pluto which has ( sadly ) now been relegated to "Dwarf Planet" status. Personally, Plu-to will always remain, to me anyway, planet number nine.

That's enough from me for now. When you have the time, go outside in the evening and look up - it will be an illuminat-ing experience.

Do you ever look up?

The history of the SAAO be-gan when the Royal Observa-tory at the Cape of Good Hope was founded in 1820, the first scientific institution in Africa.Construction of the main build-ings was completed in 1829 at a cost of £30,000 (equivalent to £2.4 million in 2017). The post of Her Majesty's astrono-mer at the Cape of Good Hope was awarded the Royal Medal on two occasions; the first to Thomas Maclear in 1869 for measurement of an arc of the meridian at the Cape of Good Hope and the second to David Gill in 1903 for researches in solar and stellar parallax, and his energetic direction of the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope.

The Republic Observatory, Jo-hannesburg, was merged with the much older Royal Obser-vatory, Cape of Good Hope in January 1972 to form the South African Astronomical Observatory. In 1974 the Rad-cliffe Observatory telescope was purchased by the CSIR and moved to Sutherland, where it recommenced work

in 1976. SAAO was estab-lished in January 1972, as a result of a joint agreement by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of South Africa and Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) of United Kingdom. The headquarters are locat-ed on the grounds of the old Royal Observatory where the

main building, offices, nation-al library for astronomy and computer facilities are housed. Historic telescopes are also found at the headquarters in a number of domes and a small museum that displays scien-tific instruments. The South African Astronomical Observa-tory is administered at present as a National Facility under

management of the National Research Foundation (NRF), formerly the Foundation for Research Development (FRD).

In 1974, when the Radcliffe Observatory in Pretoria closed, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) pur-chased the 1.9 m Radcliffe tel-escope and transported it to Sutherland.

For many of us the time has ar-rived to timeously re-new our driver's licence.

Having recently done just that, I can assure you that this is quite a daunting task.

I arrived at the Randburg Li-cence Office at 10 am to a queue which by then was weaving it's way out of the doors.

I was applicant number 132. Oh dear... should I come back another day?? Would it be any better ?? I decided to " go forth into the fray".

We inched forward ever so slowly, at times coming to a grinding halt for perhaps a half hour at a time, up two flights of stairs, with not a chair in sight for anyone of "gentle age" to rest. Between 12 and

1 o'clock, obviously lunchtime, progress really slowed down. Eventually, I reached the point where ..hooray... there was actually a row of chairs as one approached the testing office.

However, because the clock was now ticking swiftly to-wards closing time you were moving from one seat to the other fairly rapidly.

I was seated at the desk for the necessary submission of all required documentation and then came the eye test.

I peered deeply into the eye of the screen as I happily moved the lever from left to right as I deciphered the position of the letters on the screen.

This was a piece of cake ... but alas... now I had to find the lights which appear from the sides of the screen and despite wearing my prescrip-

tion driving glass-es was abruptly told," YOU HAVE FAILED". How was this possible after 3 hours of standing in that long queue. I was devastated. There is nothing wrong with my peripheral view. I had to obtain a certificate from the Ophthalmologist and go back again on another day.

As luck would have it, the day I did go back I was turned away because 'the machines were not working!!! Seriously!!! I then went back the following Saturday and finally completed THE most frustrating episode in my life for this year.

So, my friends ,if your time for licence renewal is drawing near, please heed my advice.

Go to your Ophthalmologist for

an eye certificate which should give you clearance. Have your photos taken and if possible, download the required form from DL1 Form South Africa and complete it before you go. This will save a lot of time.

Have the following:- A copy of your lD and Proof of Residence.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and do remember to take along a bottle of water.

I wish you the very, very best of luck!

RecyclingA friendly reminder that our recycling initiative is up and running. The Garden com-mittee supplied all houses with the first clear plastic bag for re-cycling. Everything plastic, as well as all cardboard and paper products can be collected for recycling. Besides doing our bit for the environment, it gen-erates funds as well. The clear plastic bags can be obtained from reception at R5 for a pack of 4 bags. Apartment dwellers can also do their bit by separat-ing recyclable materials from kitchen refuse. We thank our fellow villagers in advance for their continued support.
