Making the right impression.

Because acting like a team starts with looking like one.

GROOMINGKeep yourself well groomed and free from offensive body odors.

Hair should not extend beyond the earlobe in the front or below the collar in the back. Ladies should pull hair back.

Hair color must be a natural color. No green, purple, etc.

Due to possible allergies or sensitivities, associates should not wear personal fragrance products (colognes, lotions, etc.) with a noticeable scent.

ACCESSORIESNo hair decorations of any kind.

Belt buckles should not be oversized or feature excessive designs.

Remove any visible body piercing jewelry, including tongue piercing jewelry, while working.

No excessive jewelry or accessories such as pins or buttons should be worn.

Women may wear earrings; however, hoops and dangling earrings may not be worn while handling freight.

ETC.All tattoos should be covered with clothing.

Associates should wear only Averitt-approved hats.

No hats or clothing with another company’s logo.

Wear your Averitt hat with the bill facing forward.

Make sure your garments and hats stay their original Averitt red.

If it’s starting to fade or fray, it’s time to replace it. See page 28 for details on determining if you should repair or recycle your Averitt gear.

CLOTHINGClothing should be neat, clean, coordinated and in good repair. No dirty, stained or torn clothing. See page 27 for tips on how to remove common stains.

All shirts, except for Averitt-approved no-tuck shirts, should be tucked in and buttoned.

Approved gray pants should fit properly, rest on the hips and be worn with a black belt. Keep the length of your shorts within a maximum of 3" above the knee.

SHOESShoes should be black, polished and in good repair. See page 29 for tips on how to polish shoes.

SOME GENERAL HINTS:

Rotate your wardrobe. The best way to make your clothes last is to wear them less often. That means having enough options in your wardrobe to swap out either individual garments or entire outfits. For ideas on which garments to buy, see our Essentials collection on page 23.

Choose the right size. Aside from overall comfort and appearance, there’s another reason to make sure your clothes fit properly: Wearing the wrong size can make them wear out far more quickly. Use the measuring guide on page 30 to ensure you’ve got the right size.

Follow the laundry directions. Sounds simple, we know. But it’s very common for us all to just “go through the motions” when doing laundry. So take the time to read the individual garment labels to learn the best way to clean each piece.

Listen to Ben Franklin. It was as true back then as it is today: “A stitch in time saves nine.” By mending a tiny tear with a few stiches right away, you can avoid having to make major repairs down the line. (Or worse yet, replace the garment altogether.)

Skip the skimpy hangers. Skinny wire hangers are particularly nasty to clothes. Not only do they make shirts lose their shape, but also over time they can stretch out and damage the shoulders. So be sure to use good-quality hangers.

Give ’em room. Avoid crowding clothes into your closet, as it only creates wrinkles that have to be removed. And too much ironing only adds to the wear and tear on your clothes.

Don’t fade away. Anti-fade detergents contain ingredients that corral the chlorine ions in water — which means colors stay true. So choose these formulas to keep your Averitt Red as vibrant as possible and your dark pants and shorts from washing out. You can also add 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to your laundry to help keep colors in and odors out.

PRODUCTIVITY CAN BE MESSY.So here are a few tips on removing some of the most common stains.

Grease & OilBlot any excess with a napkin or paper towel. Then work baking soda or cornstarch into the stain to draw it out. Launder with heavy-duty detergent.

Coffee & TeaRinse with peroxide, white vinegar or club soda.

BloodStart by rubbing the fabric against itself under COLD water. (Avoid hot water, which will set the stain.) Then wash as usual.

deodorantThese are notoriously tough stains to remove. So the best approach is to avoid them altogether by waiting until your deodorant is dry before getting dressed. But if you find yourself with these telltale stains, try pretreating the area with liquid detergent and letting it sit several minutes before washing as normal.

InkDouse the area with either aerosol hairspray or rubbing alcohol. Then blot. Sponge detergent on the stain before washing.

Make sure your clothes are in it for the long haul as well.Taking proper care of your clothes will help them last substantially longer.

A FEW GUIDELINES:

1. BLOT, DON’T RUB. Rubbing not only damages the fibers, but it also it can remove dyes and spread the stain.

2. ACT QUICKLY. The faster you act, the better the chance of saving the garment.

3. KNOW YOUR LIMITS. It’s easy to make oil-based stains worse. Sometimes it’s best to get it dry-cleaned.

Breaking them in

Very few shoes fit perfectly right out of the box. With most, there’s a “getting to know you” period, as they soften and conform to your feet. So be sure to allow adequate time for that to happen.

Shoe trees

If you wear dress shoes, shoe trees can be an enormous help in maintaining the quality of your footwear. That’s because the moment you take them off, leather shoes begin to dry out and contract. By inserting shoe trees as quickly as possible after taking them off, you help extend both the life and the look of your shoes.

Leather

It’s important to polish your leather shoes at least once a month — especially if you wear them on a regular basis. Start by wiping any excess dirt or dust off the surface with a damp cloth. Then apply a thin coat of polish with a soft cloth, being sure to keep it moving in a circular motion. Let the polish dry for a few minutes, then use a polish brush to finish the job.

Repairs

Even the best care can’t prevent all footwear problems. But don’t give up on your shoes as soon as they start to show a little wear and tear. A cobbler can often fix minor issues and keep you from having to replace the shoe altogether.

again by wearing it only once between washes.

Stains under the arm - Try dissolving a few denture-cleansing tablets in a bowl of

warm water, or use a bit of OxiClean.

Missing buttons - You probably knew this one, but a needle and thread are the only tools you need.

RECYCLE

Frayed collar - You could have a collar repaired, but it’s not worth the time and money.

Frayed cuffs - Getting the cuffs replaced is just as expensive as getting a new shirt and not nearly as rewarding.

Faded color - You’ve worn all the Averitt Red out of it. That’s good, but it’s time to move on.

MEASURE TWICE, ORDER ONCE.Get the most accurate measurements.

HOW TO MEASURE MEN.

neck - Measure around the base of the neck, where a collared shirt would fit.

Chest - Measure across the fullest part of the chest, under the arms and across the back.

Waist - Measure over the shirt at the waistline, where pants are normally worn. Tighten the tape as snug as you prefer pants to fit.

inseam - After adjusting the pants to the position normally worn, measure from the crotch to the top of the shoe (or desired length).

HOW TO MEASURE WOMEN.

Bust - Measure under the arms and around the fullest part of the bust.

Waist - Measure around the narrowest part of the natural waistline (just above the hip bones).

Hips - Measure around the fullest part of the hips (normally seven to eight inches below the natural waistline).

Sleeve length - Measure from the center of the outside collar over the shoulder, around the elbow, to the point where the sleeve should end (usually the bottom of the wrist bone).

Do not attempt to take your own measurements. Many have tried; many have failed.

Wear your work shoes when measuring. The style of shoe affects pant length.

do not adjust for shrinkage. The garments have already been sized with shrinkage in mind.

Order the larger available size if you’re stuck between the two.

Be constructive - We all have unique strengths and experience. Sharing yours with a coworker when he or she is facing a problem not only makes you a valuable member of the team but also strengthens the group overall.

Respect each other - It’s a fact of life; everyone’s different. No matter how tight a team may be, there are always going to be things that set us apart. But what separates strong teams from weak ones is how well they embrace and use those differences to improve themselves and others.

There’s a lot more to safety than just wearing steel-toed boots or back support. Because looking sharp isn’t worth much if you don’t stay mentally sharp as well.
