UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION
UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION is motion in a circle at a constant speed.
CENTIRPETAL ACCELERATION is the acceleration of an object moving in constant circular
motion.
BUT WAIT! If the object is moving at a CONSTANT
VELOCITY, is there acceleration????
Acceleration is defined as the change in velocity (a VECTOR…magnitude
AND direction) over the change in time. If the velocity vector experiences a
change in DIRECTION while staying at a constant magnitude, there is a
DIRECTIONAL component of acceleration!

CENTRIPETAL: “center seeking”
CENTRIPETAL FORCE is not a new force, it is simply a way of describing
forces which act towards the center of a circular motion.
AVERAGE SPEED & CENTRIPETAL MOTION
R = RADIUS
T = PERIOD (time to make one cycle of the circle)

This means that…
Does rotational velocity depend on where the little ladybug is on the record?
Does tangential velocity depend on where the little ladybug is on the record?
COMPARE THE VELOCITIES!
A = 2πr1 / T
B = 2πr2 / T
C = 2πr3 / T
A particle travels from point A to B in 4 seconds find
the tangential velocity of that particle.
T/2 = 4s … so … T=8 s
v = 2π(3m) / 8s
v=2.36 m/s

CENTRIFUGAL EFFECT is the feeling of inertia you feel when
following uniform circular motion. This is the tendency of your body to resist
change in velocity. When you drive around a curved corner, you are likely
to feel your body lean outwards (away from the curve). This is not
technically a FORCE, rather the feeling of inertia. Centrifugal effect is not
drawn on Free Body Diagrams.
CENTRIFUGAL: “tending to move away from center”
Knowing that centrifugal effect is related to inertia is important in understanding what
would happen to an object if its constant circular motion were interrupted. What
direction would the velocity take if this object’s path were interrupted???
Name three different parts of a car which can affect velocity:
