Challenge
Founded in 2001, The Eldorado Hills Institute of Technologies (EDHIT) is a private
college offering bachelors and masters degrees in computer, aerospace, and electrical
engineering as well as computer science. The universitys main campus in Eldorado
Hills, California has an annual student enrollment of over 1500 students and 100 full-
time faculty and staff which includes students, faculty and staff utilizing remote campus
classrooms locations in Denver Colorado, Seattle Washington, White Plains New York,
Tampa Florida, Dallas Texas, and Los Angles California. EDHIT has earned worldwide
recognition as one of the top Institute of Technologys Universities in the nation.
Communication between locations primarily is accomplished by email through local ISP
connections; however, the majority of their daily communication still accomplished by
analog voice through a private branch exchange (PBX) system that has reach its
maximum scalability level to support future expansion and had become expensive to
maintain. Additionally, the high cost of communication associated with long distance
telephone calls between locations has continued to increase which directly affects the
EDHIT annual operating budget. This cost increase has the potential to have an
adverse affect on new student enrollment due to higher tuition rates brought on by the
unfixed rate of telecommunications. Another challenge for the EDHIT is to bring faculty,
staff, and students closer together through interactive real-time video-based
communications learning. The EDHIT Information Technology staff has been tasks to
implement a Unified Communication method to reduce the overall operating budget.

Solution
Replace existing PBX with a Voice over IP (VoIP) unified communication system. VoIP
defines a way to carry voice calls over an IP network including the digitization and
packetization of the voice streams. IP Telephony utilizes the VoIP standards to create a
telephony system where higher level features such as advanced call routing, voice mail,
contact centers, unlimited calling, long distance calling etc., can be utilized. (Mulitple
2012)
VoIP is the basis for the foundation of more advanced unified communications
applications these include:
Web and video conferencing. These features help businesses to completely
transform the way they do business for their benefit.
VoIP technology. This is the technique that carries phone calls over an IP
network. It doesnt matter whether you are on internet or your own internal
network. VoIP helps your business to reduce expenses as voice calls travel over
the data network rather than the phone companys network.
The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology will be integrated to the existing
campus intranet work broadband connections. VoIP will communicate and make phone
calls over established internet connections, similar with analog telephone lines. The
initial cost for setup and upgrade will include procurement of VoIP capable phones,
routers, switches, and software. An immediate cost savings will made limited by use of
already existing network infrastructure. The implementation of the VoIP unified

communication system is a very attractive and cheap communication option available in
telecom industries and reduces overall operating costs of campus communications.
