No. 15 June 15, 1925 -

GENERAL INFORMATION TO COORETORS

Ohio bird banding cooperators will be interested to know that arrangements have been perfected with Fon. D. O. Thompson, Chief of the Division of Fish and Game of.Chio, whereby they may continue to operate trapping stations under authority granted by Federal permit no State permit being required. We quote in part from Mr. Thompson's letter"of may 25, 1925: 'This Department has decided that in order to assist you in this necessary work and to cooperate to the best of our ability, we will permit persons holding Iederal permits to engage in this work in this State Without any interference from this Department, and you may consider this letter your authority to advise parties holding Federal permits that no State permit is provided for or recesiary.H

Bands.--Several unsigned order cards have been received within the past month. As post offices sometimes neglect to stamp franked cards, we have no clue as to where an order originated it such tases, Be sure to sign and date all coralanications to the Washington office.

The new No. 2 bands are made of heavier metal to resist the ef- forts of the heavy-billed finches and g p rosb eaks to crush them. Reorts will be appreciate_' regarfing their efficiency.

DIRECTORY OF BIRD BANDING COOPERATORS

Introduction

As announced in Bird Banding Votes No. 14, this issue is devoted chiefly to a directory of persons associated with the banding work, either

07,virtup of authority of a Federal permit and the active participation

cf the holder, or by such interest that they have become sustaining mem-bers of our regionni aseociations,

the latter class designated by a. et,D - 7cefore their names. There are some austaining mer.lbers n

of regional asso- cs o miation

itteds wh

asrthis io ae lso lieensed, station operatora, in which case toe star i,

a

sended to show only those who are not actively engaged in banding.

Bird 14arldin t ; Notes" is not a publicat u ia 614 .souse of tlI cs word, beillE issued Merely - for the information of our cooperators,, hot for goneral distribution, Anyone using in a publis1leid . ria,cer an`' of the LIZonletion contained in this circular will, no4ever, be expected to give credit to She person na7,ed and to the Diolo e:ibi1 Survey.

The purpose in supplying these lists is to enable station operators to learn the location of their nearest neighboring stations and their. chief lines of activity, in order that the:work may be better correlated and that special studies may be undertaken through an application of the banding method. The results of such investigations should form the basis of im-portant papers to be published by the cooperators in ornithological journals or elsewhere. In order. that operators might know who were working along similar lines.and the better to provide for an exchange of ideas, the Biological Survey addressed a circular letter to all cooperators, under date of May 7, 1925, reouestirg advice regarding the special studies re-ceiving their attention. The information obtained in response to this in-quiry is incorporated in the directory. Every cooperator will, we are sure, welcome communications from others on agedin the same lines of research.

The officers and councilors of the regional associations are desig-nated by their titles in parentheses after the address.

The bird banding work is part of a project of the Biological Survey for the study of the life habits of migratory birds and is directed through its Division of Biological Investigations. The following officials of the Bureau are directly associated with the work:

Dr. E. W. Nelson, Chief of Bureau. d. C. Henderson, Assistant Chief of Bureau. E. A. Goldman, In Charge, Division of Biological Investigations. Frederick C. Lincoln, Associate Biologist (Bird Banding Operations).

Canadian officials concerned with these activities are:

Hon. J. B. Harkin, Commissioner of Canadian National Parks. Noyes Lloyd, Supervisor, Wild Life Protection.

The directory follows the same general plan as that used in Bird Banding Notes No. 11, that is, cooperators are listed alphabetically by States, grouped under local associations. The addresses are as they appear in the files of the Biological Survey and on stencils maintained in the Office of Publications. All corrections or omissions should be reported to the Bureau.

The names of several persons holding Federal permits do not appear in these lists for the reason that no renorts have been received from them end no replies to letters of incuiry. Failure to render the reports re- 410 quired is sufficient cause for the revocation of the Federal permit, but it is the policy of the Bureau to rive each parson the benefit of the doutt os long as possible, in the hope that they are still interested and have only been prevented•by circumstances from thing an active part in the work. To maintain a satisfactory status, all holders of Federal bird banding per-mits must report at least toice a year, whether or not they have done arsz bird banding work.

Future issues of Bird Banding /Totes will contain lists of new co-operators and of those whose status has been clarified.
