Supporting an Inclusive and Participatory Progress Study on Youth’s

Positive Contribution to Peace Processes and Conflict Resolution

UNSCR 2250 requested the Secretary-General “to carry out a Progress Study on the youth’s positive

contribution to peace processes and conflict resolution, in order to recommend effective responses at local,

national, regional and international levels”, and to present the results of the Study to Member States of the UN.

A key goal of UNSCR 2250 is the fuller inclusion of young people in peace and security. The Progress Study

models this intent through an inclusive and participatory methodology, reflected in regional, national and online

consultations organised throughout the year with UNDP’s support and in collaboration with other sister entities.

The Youth4Peace Global Knowledge Portal was instrumental in providing a platform to amplify the

application calls, share supporting materials, gather young people’s views, and expand the consultation’s reach

beyond the young people who were selected to take part in person.

Regional Consultations with selected young people have taken place in: Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Eastern

Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, East and Southern Africa, West and Central Africa

and Europe. These three-day long Regional Consultations were co-led by PBSO, UNFPA and UNDP, and co-

organised, supported and funded by various UN entities and regional partners. These consultations were

essential in hearing directly from young people on the peace and security challenges they experience in their

communities and the peacebuilding work they are doing to address them. Young people were encouraged to

develop recommendations based on their discussions, which you can find in the summary reports below.

Additional consultations were organised in Belgium (for youth from the EU, the countries of the European Free

Trade Association and the Western Balkans) and Tunisia (sub-regional consultation for North Africa).

National Consultations with young peacebuilders have taken place in: Myanmar, Colombia, Kosovo* and

Libya. These consultations were led and organised by various UN entities and regional partners, and provided

an opportunity to learn more from young people about the context-specific challenges that are experienced

across their country and throughout different regions.
