T h e e m o t i o n a l e f f e c t s a r e o f t e ns h i f t i n g a n d may i n v o l v e a p p r e h e n s i o n , p a n i c ,e l a t i o n o r d e p r e s s i o n . S u r p r i s i n g l y , f i v eo f t h i s l a t t e r g r o u p o f s i x p a t i e n t s h a d no p s y c h i a t r i c h i s t o r y o r h a d p r e v i o u s p s y c h i a t r i ch i s t o r y b u t were a d e q u a t e l y i n t e g r a t e d . 3 4 I t i sc l e a r t h e n t h a t s e r i o u s p r o l o n g e d p s y c h o s e s m ayr e s u l t f r o m LSD use.

C o h e n 0 s e n t q u e s t i o n n a i r e s t o 6 2 i n v e s t i g a t o r swho h a d u s e d LSD i n t h e r a p e u t i c or e x p e r i m e n t a l t r i a l s . He o b t a i n e d 4 4 r e p l i e s c o n t a i n i n gi n f o r m a t i o n on t h e c o m p l i c a t i o n s r e s u l t i n g f r o m2 5 , 0 0 0 LSD a d m i n i s t r a t i o n s t o a b o u t 5 0 0 0p e r s o n s . P s y c h o t i c r e a c t i o n s l a s t i n g more t h a n4 8 h o u r s h a d a r a t e o f 0 . 8 p e r 1 0 0 0 among e xp e r i m e n t a l s u b j e c t s a n d 1 . 8 p e r 1 0 0 0 i n p a t i e n t so b t a i n i n g t h e r a p y . U n f o r t u n a t e l y , r e p l i e s werer e c e i v e d f r o m o n l y 7 0 o f t h o s e c o n t a c t e d a n dsome c o n s e r v a t i v e b i a s e s may h a v e r e s u l t e d .A l s o , many t h e r a p e u t i c a n d e x p e r i m e n t a l s t u d i e sd o n o t h a v e a r o u t i n e f o l l o w - u p a n d h e n c e a l lb u t t h e most i m m e d i a t e a d v e r s e r e a c t i o n s c o u l dh a v e b e e n m i s s e d .
