The power of Science to empower people 2012-2017 Strategic vision

• Goal: Implementation of UNESCO's global priorities in the Latin American and Caribbean region, according to its specific conditions and demands.

IHP ACTIVITIES IN LAC

• Assessing the impact of global change drivers on flow regimes and strengthening early warning systems (FRIEND/AMIGO) and Integrated IHP LAC Database System

• Characterizing extreme precipitation, and hydrologic modeling of floods in LAC within IFI-LAC and further dissemination through AquaLAC journal

• Improving knowledge and management of sediments and erosion through ISI LAC network

• Advancing in the assessment of glaciers through the Snow and Ice regional programme.

• Using ecohydrology demonstration sites as scientific platform for showcasing successful examples of ecosystem management within the eco-hydrological approach

management. • Mbaracayú Biosphere Reserve (Paraguay) as model region for a green

economy as a learning site • Biosphere Reserves in Central America: Bosawas (Nicaragua) and the

Trifinio transboundary biosphere reserve (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador), advise MS in management.

Delivering as One – UN Interagency projects in Uruguay

Strengthening technical and operational capacities of the National Emergency System in Uruguay • Research in DRR supported in Uruguay • Research in DRR issues in Uruguay mapped Contributions to Education policy design in Uruguay - the project will have contributed to the construction of a new systemic vision of professional development of teachers • Uruguay will count on policy-relevant information for the improvement of educational management and the promotion of learning incorporating the different territorial perspective Strengthening the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) and the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (MVOTMA) for responsible mining in Uruguay • development model for responsible mining in the country and its insertion into

the Natural Productive Uruguay Strategy • strengthening the capabilities of the MVOTMA and MIEM to effectively assess,

manage, monitor and control of mining projects in the country.
