Around the world mobile technology is jumping from the periphery of education to the mainstream. A number of the coun-tries – Argentina, Kenya, Portugal, Thailand and Turkey to name only a few – have launched large-scale programs to address educational needs with new digital tools.

These initiatives are dependent on the deep involvement of educators. Teachers are the pillars of education systems and they, more so than any other group, can help ensure that learning is advanced through the careful utilization of technology.

Recently, a number of innovative initiatives have revealed that mobile technology can be used to improve the capacity of teachers as well as assist students. In Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan and Senegal UNESCO sends relevant content and pedagogi-cal tips to instructors working in contexts where traditional professional development opportunities are scarce, but mobile phones are common. Early results are promising.

Mobile Learning Week 2014 will examine these trends to decipher how the powerful and connected devices that saturate our world can be used to support teachers.
