STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT (Version as of 4 May 2015)

of UNESCO Chairs contributing to the Global Action Programme

on Education for Sustainable Development (2015-2019)

6 30.09.2015

Of the 660 UNESCO Chairs promoting the work of UNESCO, 130 are engaged

in sustainability-related issues, and more than 30 of these Chairs are

addressing education for sustainable development. Within the framework of the

UN Decade "Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014" more than 60

new UNESCO Chairs with sustainability-related issues have been established,

providing UNESCO with a significant opportunity to contribute to the

implementation of ESD.

Good examples of ESD can be found in all sectors and levels of education but

are far from being enough and mainstreamed to achieve the needed far-

reaching transformation. Higher education institutions should have a leading

role in moving ESD from pilot to policy, from small scale to large scale, and

from margin to mainstream.

Therefore we, the first undersigners are taking the initiative to establish a

Network of UNESCO Chairs to further contribute to the success of the five

priority areas of the GAP.
