Understanding the Common Core
Kansas Development ofCommon Core Standards
Kansas Standards Development Process
Standards Committee Identification and Selection Fall 2009
25 member committee formed 10-12 standard writing members 15 standard review members
Reviewed all drafts of common core in relationship to Kansas standards
Multiple rounds of feedback Kansas Common Core Standards adopted by State
Board October 2011
Common Core Standards for Mathematics
Focus in early grades on number sense (arithmetic and operations) to build a solid foundation in math
Evened out pace across the grades
High school math focus on using math and solving messy problems, similar to what would see in the real world
Problem-solving and communication emphasized
Common Core Standards for Mathematics
Grade Level Standards K-8 grade-by-grade standards organized by domain
and critical areas for each grade
9-12 high school standards organized by domain Organization by course in appendix
Common Core Standards for ELA
Text complexity
Balance of literature and informational texts
Direct link to college and work readiness
Literacy standards for science and social studies
Clear vertical progressions across grades
Integration of Language Arts – reading, writing, literature, speaking, media

Science, and Technical Subjects Standards are embedded at grades K-5 Content-specific literacy standards are provided for
grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12

IDENTIFYING AREAS OF EMPHASIS AND SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF STANDARDS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN PIECEMEAL ADDITIONS
Kansas Additions to the Common Core Standards
Kansas Additions for English Language Arts
8
Additions are largely points of emphasis and cohesion rather than entirely new elements.
Emphasize:
• Social nature of literacy learning• Meta-cognitive strategies• Shared responsibility from all Kansas
educators both in academic and career/technical contexts
• Culturally sensitive texts• Media literacy• Technical reading and writing skills• Writing process• 6-Trait writing terminology
(Document available at: http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4605)
Kansas Additions for Mathematics
9
• No additional standards per se
• Additions are points of emphasis for curriculum design
• Two main areas of emphasis
• Pattern Recognition
• Probability and Statistics
• Can be found behind the mathematical practices and in front of the grade by grade standards
)
Kansas Advantages to Common Core Standards
10
• A focus on college and career readiness
• Inclusion of the four strands of English Language Arts:
• Reading• Writing• Listening and speaking• Language
Kansas Advantages to Common Core Standards
11
• The benefits of an integrated literacy approach – all Kansas educators have a shared responsibility for literacy instruction, regardless of discipline or content area.
• A focus on results rather than means – (“the Standards leave room for teachers, curriculum developers, and states to determine how those goals should be reached and what additional topics should be addressed” (p. 4 Language Arts).)
Kansas Advantages to Common Core Standards
12
• Efficiencies of scale – common standards allow for greater collaboration among states in the areas of
• Professional development• Resource development• Teaching tools
• Alignment to Past Efforts– particularly common core critical areas in mathematics are closely aligned to the focal points of NCTM standards

Understanding the Common Core
How to Read the Standards
How to Read the Standards
Standards - define what students should understand (know) and be able to do.
Clusters - groups of related standards.
Domains - larger groups of related standards. For each grade level in Grades K–8, the standards are organized into four or five domains.

Clear vision of how students should approach and learn mathematics.
Shifts focus to ensuring mathematical understanding over computation skills
Rewards instructional best practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others.4. Model with mathematics.5. Use appropriate tools strategically.6. Attend to precision.7. Look for and make use of structure.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning
Common Core Standards – English Language Arts K-12
The standards are organized into three main sections
Each section is divided into strands
Each strand features grade-level standards that are anchored incollege and career readiness standards
