I wouldn’t let myself sleep. For weeks, months, never more than 20 minutes at a

time, that was the rule.

I’d let any man who took an

interest sleep with me. I was

really easy and I let them do

whatever they wanted. I

encouraged them to hurt me.

She changed my life in five minutes by making me realise I

mattered to someone, no matter how broken I was. For

five minutes I felt what it was to be cared for.

It was a fresh start.

We had not seen him for years, then one day he came into school

with his wife and his baby daughter. He told us about his job and his

friends and how much he had come to love life. He turned to his wife and said – “This is Mrs Lyle, you

know, the one I told you about who helped me want to live.” She flung

herself into my arms and whispered “Thank you”
