UNDERSTANDING HYPERMEDIA

HYPERMEDIA IS…

computer

software where

information is

presented and

student activities are

integrated in a

virtual learning

environment.

Hypermedia is a

computer-based

information retrieval

system that enables a

user

to gain or provide

access to texts, audio,

and video recordings,

photographs, and

computer graphics

related to a particular

subject.

Hypermedia is anything that allows the user to gather information in a nonlinear way.

logical extension

of the term

hypertext in

which graphics,

audio, video,

plain text and

hyperlinks

intertwine to

create a

generally non-

linear medium of

information.

HYPERTEXT

a text which contains links to other texts and is therefore usually non-linear, interconnected using hyperlinks

MEDIA

not constrained to be text-based. It can include other media, e.g., graphics, images, and especially the continuous media - sound and video.

According to Milheim, (1989) learner control is defined as allowing the learner some control in an individualized lesson. The learner may control lesson pace, sequence, content, or feedback. Also, they control the amount of practice, and level of difficulty.

- gives the teacher the ability to connect with multiple types of learners through different programs which are readily available online.

- ability to quickly follow associations and look up related material.

- can help students achieve a wide variety of goals in education for example: develop higher-order thinking skills, develop group and interpersonal skills, learn content in a given discipline and develop technical skills.

dis

-a school or classroom has outdated equipment or software, certain types of hypermedia will be difficult to access or create.- disorientation occurs when users do not know where they are in the network, where they want to go next or how to get there.- Other disadvantages are directed toward the individual learner and can include prior knowledge, self-regulation skills, learning styles and attitude towards learning.

Hypermedia is defined as the extension of the term hypertext in which graphics, audio, video, plain text and hyperlinks entwine to create a generally non-linear medium of information.

Learner control is one of the features of hypermedia software where learners take charge of the events or flow of instruction such as the sequence, pace, content, media, feedback that they may encounter in the hypermedia learning program.
