Role and function of fashion forecasting agencies: Market research, consumer research, prediction of mood, behaviour and buying habits, prediction of future styles, fabrics and colours, short and long term forecasting, advise clients to increase sales, turnover and profits, cultural indicators.

Role of fashion shows, trade fairs and exhibitions: Marketing of new products and collections to widespread audience and celebrities, advanced product sales, brand promotion, entertainment, celebration of art and glamour.

How fashion trends are predicted and developed: Market research, consumer research, fashion shows, trade fairs and exhibitions, celebrity trendsetters, foreign fashion, cultural indicators, information from fashion forecasting agencies.

Outcome 2: Understand contemporary influences on fashion trends

Influence of film, sport and music on fashion trends: Film influences, celebrities appearing in fashion advertisements, film festivals and award ceremonies, fashion icons, and clothing and accessories appearing in films, sport influences including sporting role models, specialist materials and performance enhancing products, exercise and fitness boom, fashion sportswear and designer branding, music influences (i.e. pop, rock, new romantics, hip hop, R&B, dance).

Influence of celebrities’ on fashion trends: The power of the celebrity role model, trend setting, people aspiring to look like celebrities, celebrity ‘lookalikes’.

Influence of social groups on fashion trends: Classmates and peers, work colleagues, social groups, local/regional fashion, age, gender, socioeconomic status, religion and cultural influences.
