#2:RealizeThatBeingaStudentIsAFull-TimeJob-Youcan'tworkhardonlyonedayaweekandearnacceptablegrades.Lookatcollegiatelifeasafull-timecareerforthepresent.Focusongoodacademichabits,socialskills,andbalancingpriorities.Nowisthetimetodevelopskillsthatwillbeexpectedaftergraduationinyourselectedcareer.

WELCOME TO THE KATE GLEASON COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Thenextseveralyearspromisetobeexciting,interesting,andrewardingforyou,yourfellowstudents,andthefacultyandstaffoftheKateGleasonCollegeofEngineering(KGCOE). Thefieldofengineeringcontinuestochange,asitmust,tokeeppacewiththetechnologicalchangesintheworldaroundus.WeinKGCOEaredoingallthatispossibletostayabreastofthesedevelopments. Thecurriculumcontinuestoevolve,ourlaboratoriescontinuetoimprove,andourinteractionwithindustryiseverexpanding.Wearepleasedthatyouhaveelectedtojoinourengineeringteam.WewanttomakeiteasyforyoutoadjusttolifeinKGCOE,andhavepreparedthisbooklettohelpyougainanunderstandingofourcollegeandhowitoperates. Thecollegeoffersseven5-yearcooperativeeducationprogramsleadingtothebachelorofsciencedegreewithmajorsinchemical,computer,biomedical,electrical,industrialandsystems,mechanical,andmicroelectronicengineering.

Engineering ExplorationInadditiontothesevenprogramsabove,thecollegeoffersaone-yearoptionforstudentswhodesireadditionaltimeinwhichtodecidetheirengineeringmajor. Duringtheirfirstyear,studentstakethefoundationcoursesrequiredofallengineeringstudents,aswellasaone-creditEngineeringExplorationSeminarcourse. TheacademicadvisorsfortheexplorationstudentsarelocatedintheKateGleasonCollegeofEngineeringStudentServicesOffice(GLE2203).EngineeringExplorationstudentshaveoneyeartodecidewhichengineeringdisciplinetopursue.Academicadvisorscanhelpwiththisdecision. Youmustmeetwithyouradvisortomakethedeclarationofficial. Intheeffectiveterm,theplanwillchangefrom“ENGRX”toreflecttheprogramcodeofthenewdepartment. Studentrecordsareforwardedtothenewdepartmentwhereanewadvisorisassigned.

CooperativeEducationRequirementsCooperativeeducation(co-op)givesyoutheopportunitytotakewhatyouhavelearnedintheclassroomandapplyitdirectlytotheworkplace.Allengineeringstudentsarerequiredtocomplete48weeksofco-op. Beginninginthethirdyear,studentswillalternateacademictermswithtermsoffull-timeco-opemployment,asrecommendedbytheirdepartment.TransferstudentsenteringRITatusuallycompleteonetermofacademiccourseworkbeforebeginningco-op.

TheCooperativeEducationandCareerServicesOffice,inconjunctionwith KGCOE,holdsrequiredorientationsessionscalledEngineeringCo-opPreparationSeminars(EGEN99)forsecondyearstudents(offeredeverytermexceptsummer).Thesix-weekseminarclassesdiscussthespecificexpectationsofRITstudentsduringthejobsearchandwhileonco-op,includingresume/coverletterpreparation,ethics,interviewingtechniques,utilizingRITJobZone,andothersourcestofindpositions.ACo-opProgramCoordinatorfamiliarwithyourmajorisavailableyearroundtoprovideguidanceinfindingco-opemployment.

YearOneCourseDescription:TheYearOneclassservesasaninterdisciplinarycatalystforfirst-yearstudentstoaccesscampusresources,servicesandopportunitiesthatpromoteself-knowledge,leadershipdevelopment,socialresponsibilityandlifeskillsawarenessandapplication.YearOneisalsodesignedtochallengeandencouragefirst-yearstudentstogettoknowoneanother,buildfriendshipsandhelpthembecomeanintegralpartofthecampuscommunity.

CourseStructure:YearOneisazero-creditcoursethatwilloccurduringthefirst12weeksofthe16weeksemester.First-yearstudentswilltakeYearOneduringtheirfirstsemester.Thecoursewillbecomprisedofbothtraditionalin-classtransitionaltopicsandout-of-classexperientialweeks.Duringout-of-classweeksstudentswillbeaskedtoengageincampusactivitiesplannedand/orcoordinatedbythepeeradvisors.Theseeventsandactivitieswillbeorganizedaroundthemesidentifiedbyagroupofstudentleaders.Completionofthecourseisagraduationrequirement.StudentswillnotbeallowedtowithdrawfromthecourseexceptbyspecialpermissionfromtheSeniorDirectoroftheAcademicSupportCenter.Studentswillbeabletochangetheirgradebyrepeatingthecourse.

GeneralEducationRequirementsRIT’sframeworkforgeneraleducationprovidesstudentswithcoursesthatmeetspecificuniversityapprovedgeneraleducationlearningoutcomesandNewYorkStateEducationDepartmentliberalartsandsciencesrequirements.Thegeneraleducationframeworkintentionallymovesthroughthreeeducationalphasesdesignedtogivestudentsastrongfoundation,anintroductiontofundamentalsofliberalartsandsciencesdisciplines,andtheopportunityfordeeperstudyandintegrativelearningthroughimmersioninaclusterofrelatedcourses.ForKGCOEstudents,thegeneraleducationrequirementconsistsofatotalof27semesterhours: sixcoreperspectivecoursesusuallytakeninthefirsttwoyears(writingmustbetakeninthefirstyear)andthreeadvanced-levelimmersioncoursesusuallytakenafterthecompletionofthecorecourses. ExaminationPolicyCourseinstructorswilldeterminethemethodofstudentevaluationintheircourses. IfaformalfinalexamisoffereditmustbescheduledduringexamweekasspecifiedintheInstitutecalendar. TheRegistrar’sofficewillprovidethefinalexaminationschedulenolaterthantwoweeksaftertheendoftheadd/dropperiod,andmakeitavailabletotheentireRITcommunity.Incaseofconflictwherethestudenthastwofinalsscheduledatthesametime,servicecourseexaminationswilltakeprecedenceoverhomedepartmentexaminations. Ifbothexaminationsareservicecoursesexaminations,theclasswiththelargerenrollmentwillhaveprecedence.Studentshavetheright(iftheywish)nottotakethreeormorefinalexamsinoneday. Inacasewherethestudentdoeshavethreeormorefinalsscheduledonthesameday,servicecourseexaminationswilltakeprecedenceoverhomedepartmentcourseexaminations. Iftwoormoreoftheexaminationsareinthehomedepartment,thedepartmentheadwillresolvetheissue. ConfidentialityRITcomplieswiththe(FERPA)FamilyEducationalRightsandPrivacyActof1974whichgovernsaccessandreleaseofinformationfromstudenteducationalrecords. Thisstatute,inpart,permitsyoutoinspectyoureducationalrecords,providestheopportunityforyoutochallengesuchrecordsasinaccurate,andlimitsdisclosureofnon-directoryinformationsuchasgradesandclassschedulestopersonsoutsideoftheinstitutewithoutyourwrittenpermission.

Weeachhavearesponsibilitytoaddressanyunethicalbehaviorweobserve;eitherthroughdirectdiscussionwiththeoffendingparty,orbydiscussionwithanappropriatefacultyorstaffmember.Allowingunethicalbehaviortocontinueunchallengedisnotacceptable.

AcademicDishonestyAcademicDishonestyfallsintothreebasicareas:cheating,duplicatesubmissionandplagiarism.1. Cheatingisanyfraudulentordeceptiveacademicact,includingfalsifyingofdata,possessing,providing,orusingunapprovedmaterials,sources,ortoolsforaworksubmittedforfacultyevaluation.2. Duplicatesubmissionisthesubmittingofthesameorsimilarworkforcreditinmorethanonecoursewithoutpriorapprovaloftheinstructorsforthosecourses.(Ifthecoursesaretakeninseparateterms,onlythepermissionofthesecondinstructorisrequired.)Similarrulesapplyforpriorworkdoneonco-op.3. Plagiarismistherepresentationofothers’ideasasone’sownwithoutgivingpropercredittothe

originalauthororauthors.Plagiarismoccurswhenastudentcopiesdirectphrasesfromatext(e.g.books,journals,internet),orparaphrasesorsummarizesthoseideaswithoutattribution. Thisalsoappliestogroupeffortonworksubmittedforfacultyevaluation.

ConsequencesofAcademicDishonestyAnyactofAcademicDishonestywillincurthefollowingconsequences.Afternotifyingandpresentingthestudentwithevidenceofsuchmisconduct,theinstructorhasthefullprerogativetoassignalowergrade,includingan“F”fortheoffenseitselforfortheentirecourse. Ifaftercarefulreviewoftheevidence,theinstructordecidesthatthestudent’sactionsareindeedmisconductandwarrantapenalty, theinstructorwilladdalettertothestudent’sfileinhisorherhomedepartment(copytothestudent, DepartmentHeadandtheDean)documentingtheoffense. Dependingontheseriousnessoftheoffense,thestudentmayalsobebroughtbeforetheAcademicConductCommitteeoftheCollegeinwhichtheoffenseoccurred,andmayfaceacademicsuspensionordismissalfromtheInstitute. The studenthastherighttoappealanydisciplinaryactionasdescribedinsectionD17.0“AcademicConductandAppealsProcedures”andD18.0“RITStudentConductProcess”oftheInstitutePoliciesandProceduresManual.

yourwayaroundcampus--andaroundalltheredtape--themoreateaseyou'llfeelandthebetterpreparedyou'llbewhenissuesarise.

2. Gettoknowyourroommateandothersinyourresidencehall.Thepeopleyoulivewith,mostofwhomaregoingthroughsimilarexperiencesandemotions,areyourmainsafetynet--notonlythisyear,butforallyouryears.Youmaychangeroommatesafterthefirstsemesteroryoumaystayroommatesforallfouryears--justtakethetimetogettoknowyourfellowfirst-yearstudents.

3. GetOrganized.Inhighschool,theteacherstendedtoleadyouthroughallthehomeworkandduedates.Incollege,theprofessorsposttheassignments--oftenfortheentiresemester--andexpectyoutobeprepared.Buyanorganizer,aPDA,abigwallcalendar--whateverittakesforyoutoknowwhenassignmentsaredue.

4. Findtheidealplaceforyoutostudy.Itmaybeyourdormroomoracozycornerofthelibrary,butfindaplacethatworksbestforyoutogetyourworkdone--whileavoidingasmanydistractionsaspossible.

5. Gotoclass.Obvious,right?Maybe,butsleepinginandskippingthat8amclasswillbetemptingattimes.Avoidthetemptation.Besideslearningthematerialbyattendingclasses,you'llalsoreceivevitalinformationfromtheprofessorsaboutwhattoexpectontests,changesinduedates,etc.

6. Becomeanexpertoncourserequirementsandduedates.Professorsspendhoursandhourspreparingcoursesyllabiandcalendarssothatyouwillknowexactlywhatisexpectedofyou--andwhen.Oneofthelamestexcusesastudentcangiveaprofessor:"Ididn'tknowitwasduetoday."

7. Meetwithyourprofessors.Speakingasaprofessor,Icanassureyouthereareonlyupsidestogettingtoknowyourprofessors,especiallyiflaterinthesemesteryourunintosomesnags.Professorsscheduleofficehoursforthesolepurposeofmeetingwithstudents--takeadvantageofthattime.

8. Gettoknowyouracademicadviser.Thisisthepersonwhowillhelpyouwithcourseconflicts,addingordroppingcourses,schedulingofclassesforfuturesemesters,decidingonmajorsandminors.Thispersonisakeyresourceforyou--andshouldbethepersonyouturntowithanyacademicissuesorconflicts.Anddon'tbeafraidofrequestinganotheradviserifyoudon'tclickwiththeonefirstassignedtoyou.

9. Seekabalance.Collegelifeisamixtureofsocialandacademichappenings.Don'ttipthebalancetoofarineitherdirection.Oneofmyfavoriteformerstudentsalwaysusedtosayhermottowasto"studyhardsoshecouldplayhard."

10. Getinvolvedoncampus.Abigproblemforalotofnewstudentsisacombinationofhomesicknessandafeelingofnotquitebelonging.Asolution?Considerjoiningaselectgroup--andbecarefulnottogooverboard--ofstudentorganizations,clubs,sororitiesorfraternities,orsportsteams.You'llmakenewfriends,learnnewskills,andfeelmoreconnectedtoyourschool.

11. Striveforgoodgrades.Anotherobviousonehere,right?Rememberthewordsoftheopeningparagraph;whilegoodgradescouldhavecomenaturallytoyouinhighschool,youwillhavetoearnthemincollege--andthatmeanssettingsomegoalsforyourselfandthenmakingsureyouworkashardasyoucantoachievethem.

12. Takeadvantageofthestudyresourcesoncampus.Justaboutallcollegeshavelearninglabsandtutorsavailable.Ifyou'rehavingsometroubles,theseresourcesareanothertoolavailabletoyou.Anotheridea:formstudygroups.

13. Maketimeforyou.Besureyousetasidesometimeandactivitiesthathelpyourelaxandtakethestressoutofyourdayorweek.Whetherit'senlistingyogatechniques,watchingyourfavoritetelevisionshows,orwritinginajournal,begoodtoyourself.

14. Don'tfeelpressuredtomakeahastydecisionaboutacareeroramajor.Itdoesn'tmatterifitseemsasthougheveryoneelseseemstoknowwhatthey'redoingwiththeirlives--believeme,theydon't--collegeisthetimeforyoutoreallydiscoverwhoyouare,whatyouenjoydoing,whatyou'regoodat,andwhatyouwanttobe.It'snotarace;takeyourtimeandenjoyexploringyouroptions.

15. Takeresponsibilityforyourselfandyouractions.Don'tlooktoplacetheblameonothersforyourmistakes;ownuptothemandmoveon.Beinganadultmeanstakingresponsibilityforeverythingthathappenstoyou.

16. Makeconnectionswithstudentsinyourclasses.Oneofmybeststudentssaidhistechniqueinthefirstweekofclasseswastomeetatleastonenewpersonineachofhisclasses.Itexpandedhisnetworkoffriends--andwasacrucialresourceattimeswhenhehadtomissaclass.

17. FindtheCareerServicesOffice.Regardlessofwhetheryouareenteringcollegeasundeclaredorhaveyourentirefuturemappedout,seekoutthewonderfulprofessionalsinyourcollege'scareerservicesofficeandgetstartedonplanning,preparing,andactingonyourfuture.

18. Don'tprocrastinate;prioritizeyourlife.Itmayhavebeeneasyinhighschooltowaituntilthelastminutetocompleteanassignmentandstillgetagoodgrade,butthatkindofstuffwillnotworkforyouincollege.Giveyourselfdeadlines--andsticktothem.

19. Stayhealthy/EatRight.Alotofproblemsfirst-yearstudentsfacecanbetracedbacktoanillnessthatkeptthemawayfromclassesforanextendedperiodoftimethatledtoadownwardspiralingeffect.Getenoughsleep,takeyourvitamins,andeatright.Ifyouhaven'theardthejokesaboutcollegefood,yousoonwill.Andwithoutmomordadtheretoserveyouabalancedmeal,youmaybetemptedtogoforthoseextrafriesorcookies.Stayhealthyandavoidthedreadedextra"Freshman15"poundsbystickingtoabalanceddiet.

20. Learntocopewithhomesickness.It'sonlynaturalthattherewillbetimeswhenyoumissyourfamily,evenifyouwereoneofthosekidswhocouldn'twaittogetaway.Findawaytodealwiththosefeelings,suchasmakingaphonecallorsendingsomeemailhome.

21. Stayoncampusasmuchaspossible.Whetherit'shomesickness,ajob,oraboyfriendorgirlfriendfromhome,trynottoleavecampustoosoonortoooften.Themoretimeyouspendongettingtoknowthecampusandyournewfriends,themoreyou'llfeelathomeatschool.Andwhynottakeadvantageofalltheculturalandsocialeventsthathappenoncampus?

22. Seekprofessionalhelpwhenyouneedit.Mostcollegeshavehealthandcounselingcenters.Ifyou'resickorfeelingisolatedordepressed,pleasetakeadvantageofthemanyservicestheseofficesprovidestudents.Youdon'thavetofacetheseissuesbyyourself.

23. Keeptrackofyourmoney.Ifyou'veneverhadtocreateabudget,nowisthetimetodoso.Findwaystostretchyourmoney-andasbestyoucan,avoidallthosecreditcardsolicitationsyou'llsoonbereceiving.Theaveragecreditcarddebtofcollegegradsisstaggering.

24. Don'tcutcorners.Collegeisallaboutlearning.Ifyouprocrastinateandcram,youmaystilldowellontests,butyou'lllearnverylittle.Evenworse,don'tcheatontermpapersortests.

25. Bepreparedtofeeloverwhelmed.There'salotgoinginyourliferightnow.Expecttohavemomentswhereitseemsabittoomuch.Asonestudentsays,bepreparedtofeelcompletelyunprepared.Thetrickisknowingthatyou'renottheonlyonefeelingthatway.
