Brake Apart is a bicycle transit center which begins to connect Philadelphia cyclists with the city’s public transportation by activating unutilized spaces in the Market East train station. As part of the sustainable design Brake Aparts program is a series of installations inserted into unengaged spaces found along the train station. Using this approach allows the valuable gray space found in Philadelphia to remain open for other recreational uses. It also allows the installations to becomedependent on the utilities of the train station, propelling its overall design to become part of Market East while remaining its own organic form. The ve installations are located throughout the building with the main access originating from three locations on Filbert Street or from the stations platforms.

DVGBC competition

Brake Apart was for the DVGBC bike project. This project chose the market east trains station and used parasitic architecture to place the program throughout the station. The shape of these objects comes from the study shown below of transforming simple bike storage into a closed form housing the different programatic requirements.
