As S tud io B ryan Hanes s t rove to develop the V iaduct as a res ident ia l park , he embedded us in the ne ighborhood and chal lenged us to imagine the area 50 years f rom now. Through mass ing s tud ies and a master p lan, we ut i l i zed the V iaduct as a cata lys t fo r development jus t outs ide Center C i ty Ph i ladelph ia. Creat ing new s t reetscapes a long Broad St reet , Spr ing Garden St . and Delaware Ave would he lp s t rengthen the urban fabr ic which was b i sected by the const ruct ion of I -95 and 676. By increas ing bu i ld ing he ight a long these major ar ter ies , the des ign draws people toward a new type of water f ront . Wi th in our master p lan, we env i s ioned four un ique spaces . The la rgest one reproposed sur face park ing in the superb lock d i s t r ic t and created a ser ies of s tormwater b iof i l t rat ion sys tems a long Wi l low St reet . One group member examined an abandoned s team factory wi th in the lo f t d i s t r ic t and turned th i s un ique arch i tectura l e lement in to an act ive space for a l l ages . Another member chose Fest iva l P ie r and mainta ined i t as a tour i s t dest inat ion wi th a programmed mus ic venue. The water f ront would act as a res ident ia l connect ion between F i shtown to the nor th and Old c i ty be low the Ben jamin F rank l in br idge and our s i te . Our pr imary goal of S tormwater management cu lminated in an inner marsh which would mix the t reated water w i th the r iver . My ro le was to evaluate and redes ign the sunken V iaduct as a poss ib le mul t i - use connect ion between Fa i rmount Park and our or ig ina l s i te .

Th i s second year pro ject was des igned to promote an unders tanding of s i te context and three d imens ional th ink ing. Two arch i tecture f i rms , B IG and JPS , c reated th i s park to rev i ta l i ze the Copenhagen indust r ia l harbor . Th i s park i s a soc ia l icon as wel l as a dest inat ion. The adjacent park near ly doubles the capaci ty of th i s water feature and creates a dynamic water f ront . Our task was to rebu i ld th i s space us ing the arch i tectura l language of p lans , sect ions , and e levat ions . We descr ibed subt le mater ia l and e levat ion changes in a deta i led Sketch-up 8 model . Un ique components populated the model and prov ided a speci f ic unders tanding of s i te ameni t ies . As a group, we unfo lded the computer model and bu i l t the p ier and dock forms in to ho l low she l l s . However , the shape and subt le curve of the ter raced jumping p lat form made our in i t ia l at tempts to bu i ld i t imposs ib le . By s tack ing the bu i ld ing mater ia l , the pro ject was completed and our model was bu i l t to exact speci f icat ions .

Th i s four th year s tud io was our f i r s t c l ient - based pro ject . The Corn ing Communi ty Col lege wanted to create a ser ies of garden in i t iat ives across the i r sate l l i te campus. One idea was a green roof fo r the new sc ience complex at the main campus, another was a sensory garden near the i r nurs ing fac i l i ty , and th i rd was a redes ign of the i r main quad. The school , wh ich focuses on prov id ing technical c lasses a imed at gett ing s tudents job p lacements , had jus t acqui red a vacant lot across f rom the i r indust r ia l - s ty le bu i ld ing. The i r hope was to use th i s space as an oas i s fo r the communi ty in th i s pr imar i ly low income town. I w i shed to create a v ibrant space by center ing the des ign around a k i tchen where the communi ty cou ld gather and c lasses would teach s tudents about proper harvest ing, wash ing and prepar ing of foods . Th i s space could become a gem in the communi ty and a l so be a source of income for local c i t i zens . New gardening in i t iat ives in the school were des igned to create a programmed space for the communi ty and for the s tudents . C lasses would teach sus ta inable and the benef i t s of local i zed growing. I env i s ioned f ive d i f fe rent types of growing s i tuat ions , two of which could be implemented at home to lower food costs . Th i s inc luded an herb wal l and one “pot” meals . Other methods of product ion inc luded a green house, ber ry bushes in the ent ry p laza and s tandard garden p lots .

Th i s was a co l laborat ive pro ject which cu lminated in a dance per formance. A smal l team was chosen to t rave l to Los Angeles fo r two weeks to meet and t ra in wi th the members of a modern acrobat ic dance company cal led D iavolo. These incredib ly ta lented ar t i s t s under the leadersh ip of Jacques He im are renowned for innovat ive movements on overs i zed everyday objects and sur rea l i s t ic sets . Af ter observ ing them move and s tudy ing how people use publ ic spaces , we were chal lenged to create a memorable dance back at The Pennsy lvan ia S tate Un ivers i ty at the end of the year . A team of 60 people inc lud ing arch i tects , landscape arch i tects , engineers , and dancers jo ined forces to make dev ices which would enhance the dancers . Some made large objects to dance on, others worked on l ight ing sys tems to en l iven the dance or draw in an audience, and a few s tud ied body language as a gu ide to the f ina l dance. I was in teres ted in the subt le and of ten subconsc ious way people in teracted wi th complete s t rangers in open space. I observed, mapped and categor i zed people based on f i r s t impress ion and how they used the space. I took th i s data and bu i l t cont rapt ions which represented each group and would e longate the i r mot ion and interact ion wi th the space and each other . Another dev ice mainta ined the pressure of an impr int on i t s su r face which a l lowed me to t rack movement . Es sent ia l ly th i s pro ject enabled me to be part of a bra ins torming creat ive research team.
