G. CAS - INTL

Add BA in International Studies (pg. 297-357) Board would like to see an example of similar BA program.

Hillary – Concerned with CAS funding program with current deficit. Has resource form been signed? Signed copy was provided. Concern on her courses having 60-80 students in classes where there should be 40. CAS funding cutbacks. How can this program be funded? Diddy – Concerned, no capstone requirement, international studies, served on Committee with CAS, resigned because lack of coordination on International Degree. Became track of areas of studies. Nancy – AKNS - Native Studies – issues on funding with CAS – no money for current programs. Sharon Araji – working on minor – no money, dropped minor in sociology. Wanted sociology courses included in international degree program. Wanted coordination with degree. Was told courses were already selected, could not add additional. Len – Problems with question on funding of resources, there had to be some resources needed from some departments. No program could be without need for funding. Barbara Brown – would Susan consider adding sociology courses to program? Susan was open to adding sociology courses to program. Sharon – concern brought up existing tracks, last item two items, not international degree. This was an area degree with two tracks. AKNS – Would like to see Alaska Native program track included in International Studies program. Jack – concerned with business courses, CBPP - BA, ECON without supposedly any impact on funding of resources for program. Tom Miller – Could get program approved and then get funding from PBAC. Getting program passed now and then look at funding. Not having funding should not stop you 11

from passing the program. Other programs in the past have been approved without funding set ahead of time. Some programs have come through with funding in place. Len – Did the other programs like the Engineering program have a $2.5 million deficit like CAS has? Tom – the engineering program was passed when the engineering department did have a deficit. Caedmon – UABs job to look at courses, not be concerned about where the funding is coming from. Steve – felt that it was a sound program. Having the program go forward at this time and then looking for program is the way it should go. Having this programs and then going to the legislature is the way to go. Getting the students and then asking for funding, not holding back programs because we do not have the money. Sharon – problem with faculty list that had only a few term professors on it from several departments that international studies is trying to commit for workload. She did not see that there was funding from that, especially from CAS. One of the professors was Diddy Hitchens, who is retiring. She can't see the faculty being committed to the program, especially with them not all being full time faculty. Accepted for first read.

19. Justification for Action This action is being taken to bring the catalog copy in line with current realities, needs, and practices. The pre-major status creates an unnecessary step for students and misleading data regarding active majors, many of whom change from pre-major status to major status only in the year of graduation. Advising experience dictates the need to refine the Study Abroad and Credit by Advanced Placement policies. The Department is revising the Dual Languages option to make it a more viable, rigorous degree option in response to student feedback through Program Assessment.
