Under the Sea – Craft and Ideas

Show and Tell Some ideas to have for show and tell are a shell, sand dollar, sea sponge, small bag of beach sand, toy boat or a picture of a sea animal. (Ask parents if they have any of the above items for show & tell). Talk with the children about the items you have and ask questions. If they ask you something you don’t know, look the information up on the computer. The children are like sponges. They want to know everything. ☺

Fish, Fish, Shark

This game is based on the game, duck, duck, gray duck. Have the children sit in a circle with one child being “it”. The child walks around tapping the other children on the head saying fish each time, until he taps one child on the head saying shark. The child, who was tapped on the head with shark, jumps up and runs around the circle chasing the other child to see who gets back to the empty space first.

Have the children use permanent markers to decorate the socks to resemble fish. Once the fish have been decorated, fill the socks partially with dried beans, sand or rice. Secure the ends with rubber bands. Let the children take turns tossing the flying fish into the box. (Great small motor activity).

Water Table Fun In your water table, fill the table ¼ full of sand. Add many different kinds of shells, plastic crabs, small plastic medicine cups (to make small sand castles). Also include some tablespoons for shovels. The children can have a great time searching for shells. When your Under the Sea theme is over, you can have the children search for all the shells and place them in a small tub of warm, soapy water and toothbrushes. Have the children help clean the shells up to be put away. Sorting Fish Have several different kinds and colors of small plastic fish. Put your plastic fish in a basket. Let the children take turns sorting them by color, shape and by size. Shopping Fish Source: Kaplanco.com - Chunky sorting Fish – Ages 2 and up. Feed the Shark Draw a large shark face on a piece of poster board or the side of a box. Cut a hole out where the shark’s mouth would be and add paper teeth. (Make the hole at least twice the size of the beanbag). Tape the board to a chair and let each of the children take 3 tried to feed the shark, by throwing a beanbag into the shark’s mouth).

Shark Tooth Hunt Put several shark teeth (real or fake) in your sand table. Let children sift through the sand and find the teeth. Sponge Animals Cut star fish and fish shapes out of sponges. Let children play with these in the water table. Dive under the Ocean Put several plastic ocean creatures under a sheet. Call out a child’s name and say “child’s name - dive under the ocean”, then have that child go under the sheet and retrieve a ocean creature. When they have their creature, have them tell the other children what it is. (If they are too young, you can tell them). Note: if you have a parachute, use that in place of the sheet, because the children will have a handle to hold, raising the “ocean” as the child dives in. Shopping source: Kaplanco.com, Soft Fishing Set. Ages 18 mths and up. Fish in the Ocean (Game) Have one or several children be the shark. The rest of the children must try to cross the ocean (a set space that you specify) and not get eaten (tagged) by the shark. If they get caught, then they join the shark/s to try and catch more fish. Keep playing until everyone is sharks.

Put your right gill in, take your right gill out. (etc). Beach Towel Day Let the children bring in a beach towel during beach week. They can take naps on them or sit on then during circle/story time. Starfish Draw a star fish on blue paper. Cut out. Apply glue to the inside of the star fish shape and then sprinkle on dry oatmeal. Let dry and remove the excess. Starfish Rubbing Cut starfish out of sandpaper. Cut out different sizes and use different grades of sandpaper. Give each child a plain piece of white paper and crayons. Tape the stars around the table and have the children place their paper over the star and rub.

Diving Fish Take a clear two-liter bottle and draw sea shapes (seaweed, waves, etc) on the outside of it with a permanent marker. Fill the bottle mostly full with water. Next add about a 1/4-cup of white vinegar and 1 Teaspoon of baking soda to the bottle. Drop a small handful of raisins into the bottle. And then watch. The raisins will collect bubbles all around them from the vinegar and baking soda chemical reaction this will cause them to float to the top. Once the reaction calms back down they will sink back down and then form more bubbles (causing them to rise again!) This will repeat for up to a half-hour.

Octopus Wind Sock

Cut the end out of a paper bag. Next have children paint the bag and decorate it as an octopus. Have them attach eight streamers (tentacles) to the end of the bag. On the other end of the bag punch two holes (reinforce with tape and then punch) and put yarn through it. Children can now hang up the octopus windsock outside a window and watch the wind blow through it.
