Transcript of Under the Oak: July 2011
morial UMC in Flower Mound.
The Uth Kwoir (Youth Choir)
is set to lead our VBS for the
entire week. We look forward
to working with them again;
they have been a blessing for us
these last few years.
Please make sure to bring
your family’s children. Also,
pass on an invitation to your
friends and neighbors as well.
Parents can register online at
www.oakhavenumc.org; you can
also check out a preview video.
Finally, if you would like to be a
part of our time together we
would love to welcome. We
need members and friends who
will help set up things for each
day. Contact John Fletcher for
more information or to let us
know you will be there.
This is no ordinary church
potluck. Yes, there will be
aprons, chef’s hats, menus
and pots and pans, but this
is nothing like you have seen
lately. Our Vacation Bible
School theme this year is
Shake It Up Café: Where
Kids Carry Out God’s Rec-
ipe. We hope you have
made your plans to join us
this month for our VBS.
The fun starts July 11th and
carries on until July 15th;
each day we will meet from
10am until noon.
Registration is free and
open to all children in ele-
mentary school, grades K-5.
Sure, there will be fun, food
and music, but there is also
the more important thing
we will get to do together.
And that is to teach our
children, and remind our-
selves as well, to: 1)Be
ready for God 2) Give hap-
pily to God 3) Believe fully
in Jesus and 4) Remember
Jesus often.
Of course, what would
our VBS be without our
friends from Trietsch Me-

It’s time to Shake It Up at
VBS this year
What’s behind door number 1 Do you know what is going on behind this door? We can
give you a hint: There’s blue tape involved. You can sneak a
peek the next time you are at church. There is more to
come. How will you know it is finished? Here is another
hint for you: Genesis 9:13. Finally, make sure to thank our
Trustees who have this a project to finish, especially Karen
Gebert, Minnette Puckett and Rebecca Wheeler.

Everyone is invited to
our monthly Chips, Dips
and Discussion time.
We will gather in the
church meeting room.
Paul Perrin will lead our
discussion. Join us Friday
Ju1y 15th at 7:00 pm.
Advertising works.
You saw the ad and then
just had to have it.
Maybe it was something
to eat, something to
where or even some-
thing to do. Everything
looked perfect on the
flyer, or you could envi-
sion yourself there just
by watching the com-
mercial. So, whatever it
was, you went and got
one; you just had to.
Maybe it is when you
first get your order or as
you take your first bite, but
something just is not right.
Sure, the advertising got you
there, but now you realize it
is not everything you
thought it was going to be.
That is an important les-
son. Many times we give
people invitations to attend
church. We tell them things
like, “You’ll love it,” or
“Everyone will welcome
you.” Then there is, “You
will feel right at home.”
Every now and then some-
one takes us up on our
offer. What do they experience
when they come? Hopefully,
they do not think the advertis-
ing—us—was a bit exaggerated.
And, hopefully, what we told
them to expect was what they
found. How, then, can you en-
sure our church is a place
where what we tell people
about God’s love is what they
experience?
Blessed Beyond Belief,
P.S. You can read an extended version
of this article on anotherjohn.com.
Koinonia
Greek term used to express
the relationship Christians
experienced with God, Jesus
and the Holy Spirit, and
amongst themselves. The
term means “fellowship,”
“participation” or
“communion.”

Our Social Principles: War and Peace We believe war is incompatible with the teachings and example of Christ. We therefore re-
ject war as an instrument of national foreign policy, to be employed only as a last resort in the
prevention of such evils as genocide, brutal suppression of human rights, and unprovoked in-
ternational aggression.
Group recognized for long-term Bible study Last month our church recognized a group
of individuals who completed the Disciple

We would like to welcome Valencia Lugo as our newest member of the Acolyte Team. Thank you, Valencia, for serving our church.
Even though we aren’t having our regular unit meetings in June
or July, we are still moving forward with all of our projects. The
Ashford Hall “Christmas in July” is still in need of donations of
small toiletries and puzzle books (select-a-word, crosswords,
large print) for the gift bags we give each resident. The date pre-
viously announced to put the bags together has been changed,
due to a conflict with VBS. The new date is Thursday July 7,
2011 after Bible study. All help is appreciated. The date for the “Christmas in July” is still the same, Satur-
day July 16th from 2-3 PM. We will meet at the church at 1:30 PM to load up. We look forward to as
many of our church members and friends to join us that is possible.
Registration forms are still available for the School of Christian Mission to be held July 18-21 at Richard-
son FUMC. If you would like to attend, please contact me at 972-255-3152 or see Ann Kent. We will form-
ing a carpool.
We are now taking reservations to the Ladies Annual Retreat at Bridgeport Lake on Friday October 7th
thru Saturday October 8th. The cost is $55 per person; this covers your meals and lodging. The fellowship
and fun are free of charge. For more information please see Bonnie Perrin or myself.
Finally, remember you are welcome to participate in our Reading Program. See our UMW Library lo-
cated in the Seekers Sunday school room. Contact Dorene Taylor or myself for more information. Our
next unit meeting will be August 8th, 2011 at 7:00 PM. Hope you all have a safe and blessed summer!!
Mary Lou Campbell, President
P A G E 5
Our men’s group did not meet for their regularly scheduled June meeting. We have
postponed our monthly meetings for the summer and will continue in August or
September. There are no changes for the group, and the group’s apportionments
are paid to current status for July. We are still continuing the “UMM umm Good”
project to support Irving Cares. We are happily still accepting canned food items and perishables.
The UMM group and Trustees met on Saturday June 18th to do various work around the church, and a special
thanks for those who helped despite the hot weather. Our next project will hopefully be to fix the bridge lead-
ing towards the ham smoker; it has received further damage. This needs to happen before November. If you
have any questions about these future plans, please contact Steve Perrin for any information. Hope everyone has
a safe and blessed summer, and may God keep you well during the hot days of the summer. We hope to see ya’ll
in August or September on the 3rd Thursday at 7:00 pm.

AUSTIN, Texas (UMNS) — Chip Sparks,
president of the Austin District of United
Methodist Men, served as logistic planner for
U.S. military efforts to aid victims of the
massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan. In
that role, he helped receive, validate, sched-
ule, track and distribute all U.S. humanitarian
assistance to the citizens of Japan. “By the
time that I returned home on April 28,”
Sparks said, “we had shipped over 250 mil-
lion gallons of water and 100 tons of food, in
addition to the fuel, shelters and blankets to
the affected areas.”
JOPLIN, Mo. (UMNS) — The United Methodist Missouri Annual (regional) Conference is
ready to start receiving Volunteers in Mission teams to continue clean-up and recovery work
in Joplin, much of which was devastated by a May tornado. While the City of Joplin will not be
issuing building permits for 90 days, the conference reported in its latest MissionCast video,
teams can help with debris removal and warehouse organization. United Methodists in Mis-
souri are doing some volunteer work through Americorps. Call the volunteer hotline at (417)
625-3543 or register online at www.211missouri.org.

GENEVA (UMNS) - The World Council of Churches, Sudan Ecumenical Forum and Sudan
Council of Churches are calling for an end to escalating violence against civilians in Sudan's dis-
puted South Kordofan State. "The violence and displacement of people now taking place is a
potential threat to the peaceful transition and independence of South Sudan," the Rev. Olav
Fykse Tveit, WCC top executive, said. "We call on those involved to end the violence immedi-
ately and for those countries involved in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which led
to the January referendum, to place pressure on both sides to resolve this situation."

I was desired by that
affectionate man, Mr.
Pentycross, to give him a
sermon at Chelsea. Every
corner of the room was
thoroughly crowded, and all
but two or three

deeply serious while I strongly
enforced, ‘Strait is the gate,

MUGHOWO, Mozambique (UMNS) —
Four communities in remote Inhambane
West are praising God and The United
Methodist Church for the lifesaving gift of
clean, safe water. The Missouri Mozam-
bique Initiative, a partnership between the
United Methodist Missouri Annual
(regional) Conference and the Mozam-

drill 10 wells since February.

A Blast From the Past
We all know what summer means to most of our students. Or do
we? Did you know that many young people are almost just as busy
during the summer as they are during the school year? See? You
need to get to know our young people more. Here are a few ques-
tions you can use to spark a conversation with youth you know.
1) How much sleep are you really getting now?
2) What do you miss about school so far?
3) Which class do you think might be the best next year?
4) Do you need summer work?
5) What’s the best movie of the summer?
6) Can I buy you an ice-cream cone or a latte one day?
7) When I was younger I loved to….. What do you like about the summer?
8) Would you teach me how to check email (or insert your own computer question)?
9) What is the key to texting that fast?
10) What can I pray for that would bless you?
Disciple 1 is a 34-week Bible study, concentrating
on the structure, message and call of the Bible.
Participants commit to daily reading and reflection
and meeting together weekly to discuss each les-
son. We are excited to announce that Karen Ge-
bert, recent Disciple 1 participant, is set to lead
our next Disciple 1 Bible study group beginning in September. Contact Karen or John
Fletcher for information about joining that group. Also, John is leading a Disciple II course
in September as well. If you have completed Disciple 1 then please consider taking part in
our upcoming study. We would love to have you. The Disciple Bible studies take a com-
mitment, but are worth the time and effort required as you learn more what it takes to be a
disciple of Jesus Christ.
