Byron V. Kanaley AwardThe most prestigious honor awarded to a Notre Dame student-athlete, the Byron V . Kanaley Award has been presented each year since 1927 to the senior monogram athletes who have

been most exemplary as both students and leaders . The awards, presented by the Faculty Board on Athletics, are named in honor of the 1904 Notre Dame graduate who was a member of the Irish baseball team as an undergraduate . Kanaley went on to a successful banking career in Chicago and served the University as a lay trustee from 1915 until his death in 1960 . Notre Dame’s softball team has had seven winners of the award in its 27-year history . Terri Proksch claimed the honor in the first season of varsity softball at Notre Dame in 1989, followed by Kathy Vernetti 1991 and Katie Marten in 1997 . Jarrah Myers became the fourth Irish softball player to win the award in 2002 with Katie Laing earning the honor in 2008 . Christine Lux won the award in 2010 and Erin Marrone copped the award in 2011 .



One of the most productive Irish hitters and one of eight Notre Dame players to earn second team All-America honors … career .340 batting average and 30 career home runs … fifth place among Notre Dame hitters with 260 career hits … her 765 at-bats ranks fourth, and 238 games played ranks ninth all-time in school history … led the team in RBI in 1998, 1999, and 2000 … fourth all-time in career total bases (403) and seventh in career RBI (167) … previously held school record for RBI in a season with 64 in 2000 … tied for eighth-most home runs in a season by an Irish hitter with 13 in 2000 … contributed three hits and four RBI, including a home run, in an 8-0 rout of Western Illinois in opening game of the 2001 NCAA Regional … aided the Irish in the circle with 143 .2 innings pitched … garnered first team all-BIG EAST honors in 1999, 2000 and 2001, joining nine other Irish players to earn all-BIG EAST honors three or more times … earned first team (1999-2000) and second team (2001) all-region awards from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association … named 2000 BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player after going 6-for-8 with five runs scored, three home runs and six RBI in three games … won BIG EAST Player of the Year honors in consecutive years (1999 and 2000) becoming only the second Irish player to do so (Meghan Murray accomplished the feat in 1996 and 1997) … shared the Monogram Club Most Valuable Player Award in 2000 with All-American Jennifer Sharron .

A true triple threat player who was able to slap, bunt and hit away for power … one of three team captains in 2007 … played in 242 career games, tied for fourth-most in school history … played in a school-record 69 games during the 2004 season … scored 166 career runs, the second-most in program history … accumulated a .356 career batting average, eighth all-time in the Notre Dame annals … tied for sixth with Jenny Kriech (1999-2000) for career stolen bases at 55 … led the Irish in batting average, runs, hits, and stolen bases in 2006 and 2007 … set the BIG EAST record for hits in a single season with 38 in 2006 … her 38th BIG EAST hit was a two-run home run in a 4-0 Notre Dame victory at St . John’s … finished the 2006 BIG EAST season with a .528 batting average, which was fifth on the all-time league list … recipient of the Notre Dame Monogram Club Most Valuable Player in 2007 … joined Jarrah Myers as the only Irish player to earn the Notre Dame Club of St . Earned third team honors as a junior to become just the second shortstop (and first true-shortstop as Melanie Alkire played shortstop and pitched) in program history to be named an All-American … also earned first team All-BIG EAST accolades and first team NFCA all-region honors in 2010 … led the BIG EAST with a .460 batting average in league play while ranking second with a .561 on-base pct . and eight doubles … overall, the team co-captain batted .372 with 15 doubles, two triples and four home runs … slugged at a .571 clip with an on-base pct . of .472, tying for ninth on the program’s single-season list in the latter category … also had 58 hits and scored a then school record 54 runs … her 0 .95 runs-per-game average ranked 33rd nationally at the time of receiving the honor … her career numbers after her junior season were quite indicative of the steady progress she made in three years with the Irish … she doubled her sacrifice total (10) from 2009 and stole six more bases (13) than she did as a sophomore … Fleury had 18 more putouts (96) in 2010 than 2009 and after committing 23 errors in 2008 and 14 in 2009, she faulted just nine times in 163 chances in 2010 for a personal single-season career-best .945 fielding pct . … Fleury was an integral part of Notre Dame’s run to the BIG EAST regular season title and the program’s 12th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship … the Irish finished the 2010 campaign with a 47-12 mark and set single-season records for batting average ( .343), runs (369), doubles (103), home runs (75), RBI (337), total bases (878), slugging pct .
