Construction is underway on UNCW’s newest dining facility. The Hub will be a 10,000 square foot,
two-story space located between Galloway and Graham-Hewlett residence halls, and is designed to
be a modern, smart space to offer plentiful dining options as well as a dedicated meeting, lounge and
study area, particularly for freshmen. “This building was designed with not only high value dining
options in mind, but also as a way to support healthy choices and lifestyles for our students,” said
Brian Dailey, UNCW Director of Auxiliary Services. The space is slated to open in May 2017.

CONGRATULATIONS to Cheryl Sutton, who graduates on Dec 3, 2016 with her
doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership. When asked what advice she could
offer to anyone contemplating continuing their education, Dr. Sutton said,
“Remember these two truths, first, there is a Higher Power and secondly,
life still happens. All of life’s issues, concerns, unforeseen situations, etc...will still
occur even if you choose not to go back to school. So, choose to go and strategically
work your personal pathway to success. I promise when it is completed, you will not
regret your decision.”

UNCW Rolls Out Bike-Share Program
UNCW is making it easier than ever to get from point A to B with the launch of its “Hawk Wheels Bike
Share” program. Twenty-five bicycles are available for students and employees to check out 24 hours a
day at four stations around campus. In the spring, a total of seventy bikes will be available at seven sta-
tions. UNCW Transportation is partnering with Gotcha Group – Green Operating Transit Carrying
Humans Around – on the bike-sharing program. “Students have long expressed an interest in sustainable
transportation options, such as the Bike Share program, and we are pleased to be one of the first schools
in the UNC system to offer it,” said Nick Cannon, alternative transportation coordinator at UNCW.

Parking & Transportation’s New Trolley Makes Waves On Campus
Parking and Transportation has a new Seahawk Trolley that will serve campus as the Loop Express
Shuttle
(see route information: http://www.uncw.edu/transportation/documents/Loop-Express_Shuttle_2016-2017.pdf).
The trolley can seat thirty-two passengers and also has two handicapped accessible spaces near the
wheelchair lift. Auxiliary Services collaborated with OUR’s design team on the trolley’s edgy look, which
has been well received on campus. UNCW has shared the trolley’s photo on Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram and it has received a combined total of over thirteen hundred likes, one student sharing on
Facebook, “[It’s the] sweetest ride on campus and the drivers are super friendly!”

Passport Caravan Aims to Increase Number of Education Abroad
Students
The Office of International Programs teamed up with the Council on International Educational Exchange
(CIEE) to provide one hundred free passports to UNCW students during the Passport Caravan Sept. 21.
The UNCW Passport Office provided application and photo services to the students during this event.
The event was organized to encourage greater participation in UNCW’s education abroad program. Stu-
dents who registered for available slots applied for their passports and OIP provided information on op-
tions to study internationally.

We are very proud to name a few of those projects that may have made a difference in the lives of others
and positively affected our standing in the community. They are in no particular order.

Cricket on Hoggard Lawn with Pakistan Scholars
To mark the end of the visit with our scholars from Pakistan and as a part of their trip to our campus,
we participated in a game of cricket on Hoggard Lawn. The Pakistanis were great teachers, and while
we were not experts by the end of the game, we had a great time learning how to play!

Habitat for Humanity
On November 16th, 12 ITS staff members took part in a Habitat for Humanity build. We concentrated
our efforts on painting the interior of an entire house (twice!) and made repairs on exterior porches
and stairs.
Watch for your next opportunity to get involved!

ITS Service Catalog
Our IT Service Catalog team has continued to refine our service offerings and site layout utilizing feed-
back gathered from multiple campus forums. Many thanks to those of you who have participated! If
you would like to provide us with additional feedback you have one more chance this semester: 12/15,
12pm in Hoggard 252.
Adobe Visit
On October 26th, Adobe hosted a 5-hour discussion with multiple campus departments, centered
around how we can make Adobe a success at UNCW. For details on what Adobe products the cam-
pus has available, see this link.
Electronic Submission System for Faculty Reappointment, Tenure and/or Promotion
This new system was developed in conjunction with the Provost’s Office, Faculty Senate, and the CTE and
enables faculty to, for the first time, submit their “RTP” documentation electronically. Training for this
phase of the rollout was provided on 11/28, 11/29, and 11/30. Training for Phase 2 (committee review) will
begin in January 2017 for department chairs/directors, deans, and the UNCW Committee for Reappoint-
ment, Tenure and/or Promotion.
Chili Cook Off
ITS held their 9th annual Chili Cook Off on October 31st! ITS recognized Honors student, Amanda
Harman, as the recipient of the $1,300 Kenny Sumner ITS Merit Scholarship. Kenny was a member of
our ITS family who passed away with cancer at just 33 years old. He embodied the very spirit of cus-
tomer service and dependability that some spend a lifetime trying to achieve.
Staff Kudos - Jonathan Graves, Danielle Ferrell
Congratulations to Jonathan and Danielle! They were both recognized by their colleagues in ITS as giving
exceptional customer service. Taking a proactive approach to prevent delays and problems, always going
above and beyond what you would expect, and using the creative process to fix issues are a customary
part of their day.
The Seahawk Kudos program was created so that UNCW faculty, staff and students, and customers
could recognize exceptional customer service.

Holiday Quick Tips
As we prepare for the holiday break, please remember to take steps to secure your work areas before
you depart. With the decrease in people moving about on campus during the break, the possibility of
theft increases. So before you head out, take the time to secure your valuables out of sight and make
sure all doors are locked. It’s also wise to close your blinds and secure your windows.
For those of you who are traveling out of town, here’s a few things to keep in mind as you hit the road.
During this season, 91% of all travelers will drive to destinations over 50 miles away to celebrate while
only 7% will opt to fly. If you’re hitting the road, drive safely!
The busiest day to travel is December 23rd, while the day after Christmas is the next heaviest travel day
during this break. About half of holiday travelers will make same-day trips.
New Program - Lunch and Learn - “Policing the University”
University Police is offering a new Lunch and Learn program, “Policing the University – more than law
enforcement”. The presentation highlights the types of incidents and activities UPD most frequently
responds to on and off campus, the wide range of programs and services that UPD offers, community
caretaking measures UPD takes, as well as personal safety and property security tips. If your
department or workgroup is interested in taking part in this new Lunch and Learn, please reach out to
Major Bertram at X3136 or [email protected].
“Important Numbers” Magnet Updated
University Police recently printed an updated and revised “Important Numbers” magnet. If you’d like one,
please email your request to Ariel Bennett at [email protected].
ChromeRiver Travel and Expense System Update
Training for the new ChromeRiver Travel and Expense system will begin in late January. Dates and
times for training will be shared in SWOOP and on the Disbursement’s webpage. Stay tuned for
more information after the Holiday break.

Facilities News
Project Management Update
The 2016 Facilities Master Plan is well underway. WRT, the Master Planning team, conducted the
first round of campus community engagement November 28-30. Four open houses were conducted
to engage students in Randall Library, Wagoner Dining Hall and Fisher University Union. WRT
also presented the planning process and goals to the Chancellor’s cabinet and held several
follow-up meetings with UNCW leadership.
A second round of stakeholder engagement is planned for January 23-25. Additional information
about the engagement sessions will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
