What is Rotary?

• Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united world-wide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

• The object of Rotary is “to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.”

Page 6: Uncorked! presented by Grayslake Rotary Club Welcome to.

Rotary’s beginnings

• The first Rotary club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris

• The club, with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members – thus the name Rotary.

The Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

• FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

• SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

• THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

• FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Service Above Self

• It didn’t take the first Rotarians long to recognize that fellowship alone would not keep a group together – there needed to be a purpose – Service.

• The first service project was a public restroom in downtown Chicago.

• Rotary became the world’s first service organization.

The Four-Way Testof the things we think, say, or do

In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary 11 years later. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Areas of Service

Rotary’s commitment to Service is channeled through the 4 Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of club activity:

• Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of the Rotary clubs.

• Vocational Service involves members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and inspire others in the process.

• Community Service is the opportunity clubs have to implement projects and activities that improve life in their local community.

• International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace.
