UNC Dietetic Internship Program
How Do I Participate Effectively?Keys To Success In Our Program
Alana D. Cline, PhD, RD, Program Director
Effective Participation Relies On...Knowing who you are working withKnowing what that person needs to
learnHaving a clear, concise idea of the
difference between “need to know” and “nice to know” to qualify as entry-level
Having clear communication with the student, no surprises concerning expectations
Being a GREAT preceptor!
Who Are You Working With In the UNC Internship Program? We have MANY Adult & Alternative
Route Interns. This means… Adults with more & different work
experience Adults with children & attendant issues Adults with greater financial
responsibilities Adults with strong commitment to
success
More About Who They ARE...Some are transitioning from “student”
to “professional”. This means highly varied previous experiences… limited patient / client contact? limited management and f.s. experience? limited communication skills / team skills? Untested work ethic / unsure of abilities? learning how to prioritize and manage time
What Do They Need to Learn?ADA/CADE has defined that for us…
The CompetenciesOur curriculum and how it was
designed to be used by you as preceptors… The Competencies were translated into
“Required Assignments and Experiences”
The Competencies form the backbone of the “Rotation Evaluation Forms”
The Progress Reports document growth The Domain Tests “tweak” the learning
process
Need to Know versus Nice to Know
Preceptors Need to Identify
Need to Know = achieved competencies to score level of 2 or 3. A score of 1 indicates the intern needs more practice experience.
Nice to Know = advanced level nutritional or f.s. management that comes only with professional experience.
