The reference project in detail.

The customer. The energy supplier ENSO Energie Sachsen Ost AG is a subsidiary of EnergieVerbund Dresden. As a regional energy company, it supplies half a million customers in East Saxony with electricity, natural gas, heat, water and energy-related services. The company was founded in 2008 as a result of the merger of ENSO Strom AG and ENSO Erdgas GmbH. ENSO maintains approximately 450,000 electricity meters and 120,000 gas meters in East Saxony. The task. T-Systems’ brief was to merge the gas and the electricity division of ENSO and implement the unbundling at the same time. The challenge was complex, because the SAP industry solution IS-U supported all energy-specific processes at ENSO Electricity and at ENSO Gas – from billing to device management and to finance, invoice verification and statistics. The processes in the electricity and in the gas business had to be consolidated and at the same time split over two SAP applications, version ECC 6.03, for network and sales services. The greatest challenge was to think in several dimensions at the same time. Project employees who implemented meter management, for example, had to think in terms of unbundling on the one hand and consolidation on the other.

The solution. The overall project started in March 2009 in close collaboration between T-Systems and ENSO. The team began with unbund-ling individual IS-U modules, such as billing, device management and finance, in various sub-projects. They then went on to work on issues such as customer service/switch processes, interfaces to non-SAP systems, migration/master data and SAP authorization concepts. To ensure that the right target model was achieved, the requirements of merger and unbundling had to be taken into account consistently – there was no intermediate step for this. This applied to all phases of the project, from the traditional business blueprint with “as-is” analysis and requirements catalog to conceptual design, imple-mentation and tests through to migration and go-live. Although the dual task posed many complex specialist questions, we were able to complete the SAP project on schedule in no more than ten months: the two new SAP clients went live in time for the start of the new year 2010 – i.e., ten months before the end of the legal period for implementing the unbundling. One client maps the network operator role of ENSO in the areas of electricity and gas and the other maps the company’s role as supplier. Currently, the two new SAP systems are undergoing their stabilization and support phase at ENSO.

Customer benefits. ENSO implemented the merger of its electricity and its gas division as well as the unbundling within one year and in a single SAP project. With this achievement the company was not only able to meet the legal requirement for separate IT systems well before the deadline – but also to halve the cost associated with the restructuring. After the merger and conversion to one shared SAP system for electricity and gas ENSO can benefit from bundling profits: the processes for both business areas are harmonized, saving time and cost. Furthermore, ENSO continues to work with the tried and tested SAP standard solution IS-U. Not only are stability and maintainability ensured for the company in this way, but ENSO can also continue to fall back on the existing specialist know-how of its employees.

In addition, the energy supplier is now able to bill jointly for both electricity and gas, which simplifies communication with the customers. As the next step, ENSO is planning to expand the existing SAP IS solution by adding the role “metering point operation and metering service.” This will enable ENSO to offer separate services which were also liberalized by the legislator in 2009. The corresponding requirements defined by the Federal Network Agency will be implemented by ENSO with T-Systems’ support by October 2011.
