Una Clarke was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica
Migrated to the U.S. as a foreign student in 1958
Remains an advocate and supporter of U.S. foreign policy towards the Caribbean, especially on issues of trade and just immigration laws

New York City Council Elected in 1991 and served 10 years Sponsored more than 300 pieces of legislation
on issues including child welfare, education, and economic development
Una Clarke was succeeded by her daughter, Yvette D. Clarke, making them the 1st mother-daughter succession in the history of the NYC Council

In 1999, Una Clarke received the 2nd highest honor that a civilian can receive from the Government of Jamaica, the Commander of the Order of Distinction (C.D.), for distinguished service for Jamaicans and Caribbean nationals in North America
In 2001, she became the 1st Caribbean-born woman to receive the prestigious 2001 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award
Remains an outspoken voice for the preservation of Caribbean history and culture in NYC
