Vegetable SoupJeremiah Jackson arrives home from school. As he opens the door, the tantalising smell of vegetable soup reaches his nostrils. He walks into the kitchen, and stops abruptly. He can hear singing. It is coming from a pot on the stove! Jeremiah Jackson lifts the lid gingerly. Tiny celery stick figures are leaping and bouncing about, singing merrily. “Mum, Mum!” he shouts.
His mum comes running into the kitchen. “How many times have I told you not to shout, Jeremiah!” she says crossly. “Now, whatever is the matter?”
“The celery sticks are singing in the soup!” Jeremiah blusters, pointing at the pot on the stove.
His mum looks at him sharply. “Don’t lie, Jeremiah!” she says coldly and stalks out of the room.
“No-one ever believes me,” grumbles Jeremiah Jackson. He lifts the lid again…. but the singing has stopped. There is just smooth, hot, creamy, vegetable soup. Maybe he IS imagining things.
BUT as he watches, a big, round face appears in the soup, gives him a big smile and gurgles, “Duet, Jeremiah?” Jeremiah blinks. He can’t believe his ears.“Mum, Mum!” he shouts.

Ice skatingSkating is an old and popular sport throughout the world. Some people skate for fun, while others compete in local or National, World and Olympic competitions.
People skate on ice on frozen ponds and lakes or on special, purpose-built rinks. Skating rinks are long and oval in shape with a grandstand for spectators. Ice skaters wear boots with thin, sharp blades attached to the bottom. Skaters may compete in different forms of skating.
Figure skating requires great skill. The skaters move about like dancers, gliding and turning and making patterns on the ice to the sound of music. The skaters display dazzling footwork as they perform spins and jumps in a series of highly-practised moves. Judges award points for their performance. Figure skaters wear costumes and perform solo, or in pairs or groups.
Speed skating is very competitive. The skaters pit themselves against each other in a race of speed. Sometimes they start together and race against each other; sometimes they race individually against the clock. The winner is the skater who has clocked the fastest time. Skaters may compete in short or long track racing or speed marathons. Team pursuits are included in high level competitions.
Ice hockey is a sport where two teams compete against each other on ice. Skaters use wooden sticks to shoot a rubber puck into the opponent’s net. A goaltender tries to stop the puck from going into the net. The skaters wear helmets and protective clothing to prevent injury. Ice hockey is a very fast and exciting game.

The Lady with the LampFlorence Nightingale was born in Italy in 1820, but grew up in England. The daughter of a wealthy family, she was bright and well educated. Against her parents’ wishes, she decided to become a nurse.
In 1853, a war against Russia broke out on the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea. Florence was asked to go to the hospital there to nurse the wounded English soldiers. Florence took 38 nurses with her. Soon they were working hard to make sure the wards were clean and the soldiers received good care and good food.
Florence took very great care of the men. Every night, she would walk through the wards carrying a lamp, to make sure the soldiers were comfortable. She became known affectionately as The Lady with the Lamp.
While she was in Crimea, Florence developed a fever which left her weak and in poor health. After the war, she returned to England, but did not return to nursing. She did, however, write books about nursing and founded a school for nurses, which was named after her. In 1907, she was awarded the Order of Merit by the King of England.
