UMBC XC/TF's Preview of the Penn State Relays

6
With the calendar flipped to the year 2014, we can actually say we have entered indoor track season. For the next seven weekends leading up to the America East Conference Championships, every weekend will represent an opportunity for members of the indoor track and field team to shine. This weekend, the Retrievers head to blustery Happy Valley to take part in the Penn State Relays. With the entire healthy roster competing, this is your one and only opportunity to see the whole roster in action, at the same venue competing. In the sprints, All American Mercedes Jackson will open up the season in both the 55 meter and 200 meter dashes. At this same meet last year, she rebroke her 60 meter school record with a time of 7.42 seconds. Also opening up the season will be 400 meter school record holder Kirsten Jones, who will be racing above her normal race distance in the 500 meters. Watch for the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes to be the lively events. On the men’s side, recent IC4A qualifier Chris Patrice will look to better his initial performance (#10 All Time) in the 60 meter dash while seeking similar success in the 200 meter dash. He will be joined by former IC4A qualifier in both events in Sean Cooper. Watch for the 500 meter event to be a youth movement with seven freshmen and sophomores competing. The cross country team returns from its hiatus in full force across a limited event schedule. The 1000 meters should be excited with the middle distance duo of Sarah Daly and Cody Mezebish making their inaugural runs in the event, with both making a run at the current school record while MK Kulp will look to continue her march up the mile record list (#8 All Time last meet). For the men, the fireworks should come out in the 3,000 meters, where the school record and IC4A qualifying should come under assault by cross country maestros Hassan Omar, Jake Albino, Austin Hayslett, and Tommy Eldridge. Also watch for Andrew Smtih in the mile who is capable of an All Time Top Ten performance and Charles Bolinger making a mark in his 1000 meter debut. In the jumps, watch for Mo Drammeh to score an IC4A qualifying mark in the high jump and Alisha Beeman to challenge the school mark. Beeman will be joining freshman Abigail Slonski in the long jump who will also be competing in the triple jump. All American Vicent Rentzsch will open the season prepping for his bid to win the Conference title in the heptathlon by competing in the long jump, shot put, and the 60 meter hurdles. In the throws events, the trio of women of Nmeoma Edokobi, Emma Mayne, and Jenn Nelson will be pulling double duty in the shot put and weight throws. 2013-14 Indoor Schedule: December 7th, 2013 Bison Opener Bucknell University January 11th, 2014 Penn State Relays Penn State University January 18th, 2014 Terrapin Invite PGSLC January 24th, 2014 NYC Team Challenge NYC Armory January 25th, 2014 Patriot Games George Mason Invite Jan. 31st- Feb. 1st, 2014 Penn State National Invite Penn State University February 7th-8th, 2014 Armory Collegiate Invite NYC Armory February 14th, 2014 Rider/Lafayette Invite NYC Armory February 23rd-24th, 2014 America East Championships NYC Armory March 8th-9th, 2014 IC4A/ECAC Championships Boston University March 14th-15th, 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships Albuquerque, NM Bucknell Bison Opener: The women’s 4x4 (Abbey, Fogle, Yuille, Adelola) won Chris Patrice sets an IC4A qualifying mark of 6.98 in the 60m dash (#10 All Time) Alisha Beeman jumped 5’ 5” (#4 All Time) and Mo Drammeh jumped 6’ 7” to both finish second in the high jump. Originally recruited to be primarily a javelin specialist, Rentzsch began to blossom in a variety of events throughout the season and is a contender for the indoor heptathlon title. During the indoor championships last year, Rentzsch competed in the heptathlon (60m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60m Hurdles, pole vault, 1000m run) and finished third. At the same time he competed in the long jump and shot put individually. Outdoors he not only won a Conference title in the javelin, but followed it up with a decathlon victory, which included a shot put performance that would have scored in the open event. This year, Rentzsch will be looking to take the indoor title in the Heptathlon, and score podium finishes in the shot put and long jump.

In the first meet this season at the Bucknell Bison Opener, MK Kulp became the first female athlete to be ranked in the Top Ten All Time in the 800 meters, 1000 meters and mile for indoor track. She set a personal best 5:14 a year after finishing fourth in the America East Conference in the 1,000 meters. In outdoor track, she picked up a new event in the 400 meter hurdles and quickly excelled finishing fifth at the America East Championships and with the third fastest time in school history. After an injury curtailed her fall she is looking to replicate her success in the 1,000 meters and become the first UMBC athletes to advance to the ECAC Championships in that event.
