So we are nearly through the second term already and time has flown by!

The headliner I have been working on is our elections!! For the first year ever at Trent we are having a mammoth election! 6 Full Time Exec, 3 Liaison Officers, 8 Student Officers, NUS delegates, Student Trustees and over 400 societies Committee positions. So I have been working to make sure that we allow equal opportunities for all candidates and ensure we get as many voters as possible!

In relation to the executive positions, we have been reflecting on each role, how it is seen by students. In light of what we found we have written newly proposed roles for you to vote on today!? The big things are shortening of titles, moving of volunteering and Halls committees. Hopefully the new roles will be more representative of the exec and how we want to move forward as a union!

Lastly, and most recently I have been working on our involvement with the Heart Clifton Campus redevelopment. The project has developed a lot in the past few weeks and we are ensuring that students are at the heart of the discussions! Along with that we are in constant communication about the car park, which is an ongoing issue!

- We received the plans and dates of the Heart of Clifton project (demolition) very late on in the process. The opinions of the students have been expressed clearly, stating in relevant meetings that there should be little disruption to students studying, especially at a crucial time. I am waiting to hear back about how they plan to limit noise issues and still have enough space for students.

- Looking at ways to improve the course rep system for next year. Including, training reps in partnership with NTU

Varsity- Video has over 18000 views which has helped promote the series massively. The Ice Hockey sold out, and we sold over 300 pink T-Shirts, we also sold out on foam fingers. Due to the unfortunate weather, The Harvey hadden seated stand had to be closed- meaning the American football had to be postponed. Rugby League decided to go ahead without the stand and raised over £400. Because Harvey Hadden is now closed completely the contingency has been put at Clifton.

Sports Ball- I have been looking into viewing potential venues for the best value for money.

Committee Training- I am currently working on running an AGM training session for Sports committees. This will ensure that members get voted in democratically and that the candidates are completely aware of the commitments to their roles.

I am also currently reviewing the Memorandum of Understanding with NTU Sport to update the relationship with NTSU.

course leaders, elections in third term, making feedback go through the channels quicker and easier. Student council passed the motion to have faculty reps, which I have now facilitated a way in which this can be done.

- The reps took part of the second feedback week of the year. The main issues were around IT, the library, timetabling, and teaching quality.

- I have received feedback around timetabling of exams. I have contacted other unions to find out what their policies and will be lobbying for 48hour gaps between exams at my next relevant meeting.

- I have been working on the Higher Education Academic Review project. It acts as a CV on graduation transcripts. Although this will not be for your year group as it starts with 2014 freshers, it will hopefully improve the communication and knowledge that lecturers have about you extra curricular activities. Which in turn will have positive impact on your relationship with tutors.

Grad Ball- The student questionnaire went out at the start of term; we received over 500 responses which have been very useful in determining preferred dates, the venue and preferred artists.- We have already made approaches to the agents of preferred artists.

Fresher Rep Applications- Redesigned the application process in order to appeal to a wider range of students while still attracting the ‘die-hards’.- Confirmation that the applications will go live for 1-week starting Mon 21st April, closing Friday 25th April and interviews occurring the week after.

DJ Platform aka AuDJtion- Continued success from the setup- Jarleth Eaton was offered the chance to play a regular 3 hour slot at First Base on a Wednesday after a successful Last Day of Term slot

Puppies- Meeting up with representatives of the Dogs for the Blind Association early March in order to organise a Puppy Day/Week in Term 3 for the Take 5 campaign, with the idea of relieving stress during the Exam period.- Spoken with members of Loughborough Students’ Union to get feedback on their event and how they thought it could be improved so that we host the best possible event.

Societies

Membership Numbers = 5,500. There has been a focus on encouraging societies to use the new Student Union space for small and large scale events. Varsity Darts and Shyaam have been planned successfully proving large society events do work fantastically well in the building. We are currently working with FFC and LEX to arrange Go Harder Go Home and The Law Ball. Many societies have regularly bookings for small social events in the Union many of which ran through Give It a Go Week.

Page 7: UM Guide March 2014

I have been working with the university on Global Week coming up at the beginning of March; we have a variety of society events and are changing the Student Union menu for the week.

Society elections will be online at the same time as the Executive election to make one mass election. 80 societies have been advertising committee positions which will be elected at the end of March. This means all committee wills be elected ready for training in 3rd term.

RaG

RaG Week fell in the first week of February. I co-ordinated 14 events across 5 days including Touch It, Sleep Out and a Fundraising Fair including students from Halls and Sports.

Escape and Evade is organised and 50 students have signed up, it’s taking place at the end of February.72 students have been recruited for the Childreach challenges and are currently working to fundraise for their first deadlines.

Volunteering

I have set up a new mentoring scheme where students volunteer in a local organisation working with children with Autism.

This year we have based volunteering Week around the idea of doing a Good Deed. Throughout Volunteering Week there’s a selection of events set up where students can do a Good Deed. I set up a campaign encouraging students to share their small and large Good Deeds through twitter so every student has the chance to get involved.

Since coming into office on 25th October I have tried to take all the opportunities possible to find out the views of those I represent.

It is not enough to assume that because I fit into that category I will be able to identify with all the views expressed and that I will necessarily feel the same. Therefore I have been talking to those who fit into the demographic and trying to gather what their views are on how they are represented or underrepresented in the university.

I feel like - in the early stages which I am currently in now - talking with people is crucial not only to make your role clear but to allow people to voice their opinion and of course steer towards the direction which needs to be taken.

During this initial beginning process I will also be making plans/targets and laying down the necessary ground works.

Ben KingLGBT Students' [email protected]

First term saw the first LGBT Students’ Assembly which was very successful - a big turnout meant our assembly reached quoracy and as such we could pass several action items, including updating the Code of Practice to recognise the LGBTQIA community and working towards improving Freshers’ Week and rep policy, which is making great progress with the leadership of Marcus Boswell.

This term I have been investigating ways for the student union to celebrate LGBT History Month and also planning our next assembly. The Pride society have been putting on fantastic weekly events for students and I encourage anyone interested to get involved.

Faisal ChiktePostgraduate Students' [email protected]

Hi, I’m Faisal Chikte and I am your Post Graduate Student Officer.

I apologies firstly for being late in arranging assembly due to very tight schedule of the university but finally we arranged assembly for post graduate students to bring big ideas and their opinions and worries towards me. This assembly also looked after arranging any one day trip or social events for post graduates students so that they will get more involve in student union activities.

I am also trying to ensure that all post graduates and other students voice is being heard by student officers who are constantly in the process to improve student experience at NTU. I came across many emails related to student issues and also i am trying my best to raise such issues and solve it either manually or taking it to union meetings.

Steve EbelingMature Students' [email protected]

Since the last Union Meeting there have been two further assemblies for mature students. To be notified of assemblies or other events relevant to mature students, the students had expressed the desire for communication channels between the SU and mature students to be expanded. Therefore, in addition of utilizing the NTSU Mature Students Facebook group, the SU has begun to send out emails to students that have identified themselves as mature students on the SU website. Regarding other events designed for mature students, the Facebook group and assemblies have been utilized to find out what sort of social events or activities mature students would like to happen. Students have also expressed the desire of having certain fresher reps during Welcome Week located at mature students halls. The SU has begun communication with the respective residence managers to look at this possibility.

Lucy OrbellWomen's [email protected]

This term I have run weekly Zumba fitness classes in the SU, to encourage women to socialise and to keep healthy, both physically and mentally. I have also used the sessions to raise awareness about issues effecting women and to collect feedback from the female student population.

I have helped Katie run an event in Eating Disorder Awareness Week to raise money for charity. After holding my second successful assembly,

I am running a campaign in the student union on the 5th March to find out what Trent women need support with; and plan to use this information to implement change and to pass onto the future Women’s officer. Come and meet me on the 5thand let me know how I can help you!

Bernadette WalshSchool Rep Forum Student [email protected]

This term I have attended several meetings as both the representative of the School of Science and Technology and the elected School Rep Student Councillor. I have been involved with the NTSU and the VP of Education & Representation led school forum.

The meetings I have been involved with are as follows:

- 8th January: School Rep Forum with VP Education & Representation

- 13th January: NTSU Student Council to discussion of student Big Ideas

- 29th January: Meeting with Pro-vice Chancellor Chris Pole to discuss course quality

- 10th February: NTSU Student Council discussion and submission of two Big Ideas

This month I have also liaised with the course representative and course leader to assist with course feedback on the exam timetable, which has now been resolved. I hope to continue to work effectively between these groups to maintain communication and ensure that the issues are addressed accordingly.

Papers B:Big Ideas for discussion

A.) Opening times at City gym

I feel the city gym should be open much later, after talking about this with many friends and course mates everyone seems to agree that half 10 is too early to close after having a full day of uni, sports, socialising etc.

Thanks :)

Student Council proposed amendment: Lobby the University to trial later opening hours at the City gym.

B.) Creation of a Male Officer position

I am Currently a School Rep for the School of Education and sit on the Learning and Teaching Committee (the suggestion I am making is representative of the views of the LTC and many students who I have spoken to).

We would like the SU to create a Male Officer position. We currently feel their is not enough representation for male students, particularly in the School of Education both on our course and as Course Reps. we feel this would create the opportunity for the needs of male students to be better put across and hopefully enable use to meet their learning needs.

C.) Clifton car park

To Lobby the University to fix Clifton car park, it is currently full of pot holes making it very dangerous for both cars and pedestrians.

Papers C:Changes to Executive Roles

See next page for the basic job descriptions of each of the full time Executive Officers proposed in the changes. Italic text denotes a change from the current remit of officers.
