Needs Assessment/Course Overview:

Ultrasound has become one of the most accessible and most widely used tools available to assist the physician with diagnosis and management decisions.  As such, more and more physicians are looking to make the performance and interpretation of ultrasound diagnostics and ultrasound-guided procedures an integral component of their clinical practice.

The overall objective of this course is to familiarize the physician with the knowledge and skill sets needed to safely and accurately incorporate a variety of point-of-care ultrasound services into the provision of direct patient care.  This will be accomplished through a comprehensive didactic review of the most clinically significant anatomic-specific areas relevant to physician-performed ultrasound as well as hands-on instruction in image construction, analysis, and medical decision making using both live and phantom models.  In addition, course participants will have the opportunity to participate in both diagnostic and interventional ultrasound-based procedures as a part of the hands-on curriculum.  At the conclusion of the course, all participants will be expected to complete a comprehensive evaluation of the key concepts presented as well as be given the opportunity to demonstrate their ultrasound acumen first hand.

Objectives:

1. Assess the science, techniques, and challenges associated with physician-performed ultrasound.

2. Discuss the indications for and limitations of utilizing ultrasound in clinical applications.

3. Describe and perform various organ-specific ultrasound examinations and bedside procedures.

4. Develop individualized strategies integrating physician-performed ultrasound with improved patient care.
