A Marathoner Diversi f ies

by AAf,ckey Gampanf,efllo

The Internat ional Tr iathlonheld in Kai lua-Kona, r :awai i hasthe reputat ion of being the mostdemanding indiv idual sport inthe wor ld. f t consists of threeeventsz a 2.4 mi le ocean swim, a112 ni le bike r ide and a marathonrun (26.2 mi) . The event was heldon Feb. 14 under sunnY skies and8C degree temperatures. The is-land was beaut i fu l , and the sPec-tators and contestants were verywarm and fr iendly towards eachother.

MY training for th is racebegan in l ioverber. A 2:46 mara-thon in l ;ewport , Rhode rs landshowed me that I was in finerunning shape. I had been bik ingafl surnrner and faI1 so I knev/that I had a good base. Never acompet i t ive swirnmer, I at leasthad some experience swinuning inocean water. . l {Y knowledge ofaquat ics and abi l i tY to handlemysel f in the water made me feelconf ident about the srv im Port ionof the race. l ' lY t ra in ing beganwith a 1000 yard swim everYother day, but soon I had upPedthat. to 4000-5000 Yards everYother day. tucki ly, some of theconpetitive swimners and coachesat Spr ingf ie ld Col lege helPed mewith my srvimming technique.

Vir tual Iy aI l of mY bicYcletraining was done on a Monarkstat ionary bicycle, which I con-verted with toe cI ips, racinghandlebars , r . tater bott le

' seat

and seat post. I rode 4-5 t imesa week for an hour or two eacht ine. of ten i t was extremelYbor ing, but f r iends r id ingstat ionary bikes next to ne anda radio made the t ime Pass morequickly. This aspect of mYtraining helpeC me to becomeheat-accl im.at ized, as I vJoreextra c lothing to Promotesweat ing.

Twice a week I did someweight t ra in ing to maintain mYoveral l strength, but gave thisup in the last four weeks towork more on the individualevents. I cont inued to run 40-50 mi les a week, t ra in ing 3hours a day from Novedber unt i lthe event. I was st i l I teachingand studying, and my totalcalor ic intake increaseC consid-erably. I was consuming between6000 and 7000 calor ies a dav, with 3 large meals and two smal lerones in between. FortunatelY,the Spr ingf ie ld Col lege cafe-ter ia proved to be an athletersCel ight regarding Proper nutr i -t ion and a suf f ic ient nunber ofcalor ies.

FinanciaI lY, m.Y Part ic iPa-tion was made Possible bY rnYlocal Chamber of Commerce and

YMCA (creenf ie ld, Mass.) , Also,a considerable amount of roneywas raised by the Penci l andStenci l Clown Show; Penci l isme, vrhi te Stenci l was my handler.

I arr ived in l lawai i a vreekearly to get used to some ne\\ttubular t i res, to s l t im in theocean and to aid the accl imat iz-at ion process.

The cannon went of f 4t 7:15as 326 men and women of a l l agesbegan this gruel l ing event. Theswim went well for me as If in ished t i :e 2.4 mi les in l - :28,7 ninutes ahead of my predictedt ime. Though far behind the lead-ers j -n J-86th pIace, at least ffe l t a l l r ight and, more import-ant l -y, d idnrt drown. The swirrningwas except ional ly wel l -marshal led'wi th over 18 outr igger canoeskeeping a watchful eye on thepart ic ipants. There were alsoserreral motor boats ancl l i fe-guards, so the swimmers fe l - tqui te secure.

After the swim we were hand-eC bags with our cycl ing gearand directed to the shower areavrhere we r insed of f and changed. The next event was the one wewould be compet ing in the long-est . The r ide was 112 ni lesof rol l ing hi l ls . I t was verywarrn, with tenperatures in the80rs and br ight sunny skies.Iqoreover, we were r id ing nearthe coast through deserted lavapi ts which radiated the heat, making i t that much hotter.Surface temperatures were re-corded at over 100 degrees.EP,G and water.were avai lable ataid stat j -ons every f ive mi les.Over 900 volunteers helPed withthe race and the organizat ionat the aid stat ions was tre-mendous. You just threw down anempty water bott le, and some-one handed you a f resh one.Over 1000 bott les were donated.During the bike race, eachpart ic ipant was weighed twiceto check for weight loss anddehlzdrat ion. At the f i rstweigh stat ion I had gained apound, s ince r was dr inkingfrequent ly and had start ingeat ing food ear ly in the race.I fared wel l in the out Partof the out-and-back course, but headwinds were strong onthe return t r ip. I was feel ingthe ear ly stages of fat igue'and f in ished in 7 hours, whichwas 45 minutes slower than Ihad hoped.

After a second weighing(2 Ib loss th is t ime) , a changeof c lothes, and more water, Ibegan the last 1eg, the one Iwas best t ra ined for. I t was4:I5, the sun was shining, and

i t v7as pret ty hot. I startedat an 8:20 pace and sensed thati t was going to be a long race.t l i th in the f i rst s ix mi les Ipassed 21 people, manY of whomwere cycl ists rather than run-ners- I t fe l t good to pass thei ! ,but r t r ied to be encouraging, urging them to keep on. Fornost of us the nain goal wasf in ishing and then worrying aboutthe total e lapsed t ime, ratherthan try ing to get a gooi l P1ace.Again, the volunteers were great, manning aid stat ions everY mi ler ' : i th ERG, coke, and water. ourglycogen-depleted brains andnuscles appreciated their encour-agement and cheer ing. some ofthese volunteers assisted up to20 hours at d i f ferent aid stat-aons.

By the hal f -marathon PointI had passed 5I people, many ofwhom were walk ing, total ly ex-hausted, or else plodding alongat a snai l 's pace. The long daywas taking i ts to l1. Final IY, at18 mi les, i t began to get darkand cooler. I soon Picked uP thepace and vras abfe to run thelast s ix mi les at a 7:30 Pace-I"Iy tine was 3: 4'7 , 20 minutesslower than T hoPed. -After af5 minute massage, I had a fewbeers and took i t easY. I fe l tgood about complet ing the chal-lenging race, and haPPY that Id id not disappoint mY fr iendsand supporters. The tr iP was arnenorable onei I net nany int-erest ing people, and the raceorganizat ion was the best I haveever seen.

The next daY I returned tothe beach trhere Inlalt Stack wasjust f in ishing. Walt is 73 Yearsold, and had been on the roadsfor 26 hours. He was greeted bYsome townspeople and other con-testants as, haPPY to have f i -n ished, he immediatelY clowned abeer. Soneone came uP to I {aI tand gave him a big hug. I t wasHarry cordel los, who had alsocompeted and had done qui tevrel1. As a matter of fact 'Harry 's performance was incred-ib le. HarrY has been bl ind f rombir th, yet managed to f in ish.I t was qui te hunbl ing seeingthese two men, making ne thank-ful for the abi l i t ies God hasblessed me with.

The winner of the Interna-t ional Tr iathlon was John Howard,r wor ld c lass cYcl ist , whoseLir .e was 9:38. He had f in isheclth i rd l -ast Year. Of the 326starters, 299 f in ished, aremarkablY high Percentage-

This event was one of thehigh points of mY athlet ic ca-reer, and one I '11 cher ish forthe rest of m.Y l i fe. oh Yes,I f in ished in 102nd Place, wi tha t ime of L2244;44-

An "ul t ramarathon" is '

technical lY' anY race longer

than 25 mi1es, 385 Yards, which

is the wor ld standard distancefor the marathon. The three nostpopul-ar ul t ras are 50 ki lometers

ir i mires), 50 mi les, and 100

ki lometers (62 mi les) . 100 mi le

events held ei ther on a t rack or

on the road are start ing toappear on the Arner ican runningscene with more f5equency' rn.

adcl i t ion, races known for theirpecul iar endurance features are

6ecoming better known. The West-

ern States 100 and the Old Don-

in ion 100 are gruel l ing cross

country races '

whi le the 72 ml le

run ar6uncl Lake Tahoe Providessome of the more scenic suf fer-inq avai lable to the ser iousul i rarnarath<>ner. 24 and 48 hour

track races are avai lable tothose who sinPlY can' t get

enough.

Most runners choose a 50

miler for their f i rst u l t ra;f rom a training standpoint , i t

is the shortest u l t ra to require

special preParat ion, . I bel ievetiat the 50 km can be handledlike a ma.rathon, with the excep-

tion that You might want to adda few extra 20 mile runs to Yourtraining. The thoughts that fo l -

low addiess gett ing readY for

vour f i rst 50 miter wi th some

iaaea-Gug-gestions for those vrho

have already gone beYond round

one and are becoming rnore in-

vol-ved in the sport of u l t ra-marathoning- TheY are sugges-t ions, not ru1es.

Before You Enter an Ultra

There are some things Youought to have done before trYing

50 mi les:. -ence -- you

I ' Race exPerlshould have run some races, an-

cl-uding at least one marathon 'The race directors in rnanYultras wi l l not Permit entrY bY

a runner who has not comPleteda marathon or 50 km. PresumablY'

they are concerned about their

own l iabi l i tY and about PossibleiniurY to the entrants ' Further-mole,- they Probably do notwant to subject their volunteersto a life sentence out on thecourse. ManY races have t imelimits which You should keepin mind when You enter- Run-ners who have not Yet completedthe race when those time limitsare reached will be automatic-alJ-y disqual i f ied. For Yourf i rst endeavor in an ul t ra-marathon' I would suggest a racewith a verY lenient t ime l imi t 'or one with no t ime l imi t at

2- Runninq base - There is

no maqic mi leage forr :u la to

def ine the base of f of which Youcan run Your f i rst u l t ranara-thon. .qs a rufe of thumb, I th ink

i t can t e fa i r lY said that two

vears of consistent running ex-perience would Provide a runnerwith an adequate aerobic baseupon which to bui ld an ul t ra-mirathoning training Progran' I t

would be he1-Pfu1 i f Your decis-ion to enter a 50 mi le race vraspreceded bY at feast s ix months. f s0 ni le v/eeks. wi th that tYPe

of base, You ought to be able to

handle the t ra in ing and exPectto d.o reasonablY well in Yourf i rst 50 rni le race.

3. i ime to get readY - rnaII probabi l i tY ' Your PrePara-t ion for your f i rst 50 mi lerwiJ-l involve more running timethan you current lY sPend- Thefour months Prior to the racei tsel f vr i l -1 be an intense runningexperience around which You aregoing to have to schedule therest of your l i fe.

Trainingonce You have decided to

make the commitment, enter the

race and then tel1 everyone thatyou are going to do i t . That nay

i .""o vorr- f rorP gett ing cold f eet 'a tLnPtat ion You rv i1 l feel sev-

eral i ines - esPecial lY dur inglong training runs. Then startworking in earnest:

l - . Increase Your averagemiles to at least 50 Per weekand maintEfn-t t r is for three to

four months Pr ior to the race'

This f igure does not include the

overdisiance runs-IFat You vri11

also do.

2. Dur ing the four monthspr ior to Your f i rst u l t ramara-ihot , t , tat three to f ive extradi t t " t t "" runs of 30 to 45 mi les 'Exper iment wi th the sPecialdr'inks and foods that You mightwant to use in the race' A1so,

exper iment wi th shoe and sock(oi sockless) combinat ions' Run

Ioops that Permit Plenty of

arii-rking and short rests ifneeded. Finish these runs nomatter tro-w lonq they take ' Run

them alone, i f Possible. Com-

oleting-EFem alone will toughen

You menta111r. Needless-to saY'

irr"r" tott= ihoutd be slow and

easy, as relaxed as Possible '

3. PreParat ion for an ul t ra-

marathon should not neglectupper bodv develoPment. Strengthin- t f re upper body is part icular ly

cr i t ical to Yoor form and to the

carr iage of Your arms dur ing an

ul t ramarathon. This becomes asiqni f icant factor late in the

run. I would suggest weighttraining as the ideal uPPer bodYcondi t ioning tool . Personal lY'I have alwaYs gotten alcng wel lby s imply doing nanY PushuPS.swimminq is also excel lent , butremember that the idea is tobui ld strength not bulk.

4. Apart f rom the overdis-tance runs, Your remaining week-Iy mi leage should be done atmlximum steady steadY state,wi th about f ive to ten Percentat anaerobic ef for t . I have hadreasonable success fol lowing thetraining methodology suggestedbv Arthur Lydiard and wouldsi :qqest "Running the LYdiardwaln as a good reference book.when i t comes to that Port ionof your t ra in ing Program whichinvolves sPeed work, i f You havea choice betr teen running inter-vals on a t rack or running hi11s,I would strongly recornmend thehi l ls to everyone- I f You haPPento encounter hi l ls in Your 50mile race, You' l l be ready for

them. I f You don' t encounterhi1ls, the course wi l l seem eas-ier . Ei ther waY' You win. Fur-

thermore, there is at least oneschool of thought that saYS hi I Iwork does far more for quadr i -

ceps than flat interval \torkoutsdo-. I susPect that to be trueand, therefore, conmend Yourattent ion to the hi l1s s ince thecondi t ioning of Your quadr icePsis al l i rnportant in an ul t ra-marattron.

Diet

1. I t wonrt hurt to gaina couple of Pounds- You' l1 re-tain more water ' which You canuse. Besides, You'11 burn about5,000 calor j -es on race day-

2. "Camel" uP for a couPleof weeks before the race- Dr inklots of l iqui-ds.

3. Forget about carbohy-drate foading. I t won' t work ina 50 mi le run. You can' t Poss-ib ly store enough glYcogen forthat distance. Yourre going tohave to ingest carbohydratesearly in the run and rely on theabi l i ty of Your body to burn fatas a fuel late in the race-(women can do this more ef f ic-ient ly than men. I f they evercome to bel ieve that ' theY rv i11probably become verY comPetitivei-n the ul t ras. )

What to ExPect in Your First 50Mile Run

I . Overal l fat igue '

notnecessar i lY sore muscles, is theproblem in an ultra- Somewhereiround 30 mi les i t starts to

Winner Terry Knickerbocker

The NYRRCts Iggl Ul t ra Ser-ies got of f to a f ine start onMarch 7, r,/ith the fourth annualKnickerbocker 60 km run in Cen-tral Park. Several inches ofsnow the previous dav and abr isk wind made for lh i t ly =p""-tators and spl i t recorders, butthe road in the park was free ofsnow, and the conditions weregood for running. Central parkjoggers must be fai r ly used. toweekend races by now, and thevseem to enjoy the presence ofsuch events.

The pre-race favorite wasBi l l Devoe of eueens, who hasan impressive ul t ra record forsomeone whots only been runningser iously for three years. In1980 he defeated A1lan Kir ikin a 40-mi1er, won the nat ionalTAC 50 km championship and thePhiJ-adelphia Marathon, andplaced 44th at Boston with a2224247. Bi l l 1ed throuqh thef i rst lap in 38:02, but wasnot- running away from the f ie ld,as both Larry Friedman andTerry Knickerbocker lookedstrong, 30 seconds back-

The race was a homecomingof sorts for the 32-year-oldKnickerbocker. He had won theinaugural version of this race4 years ago, running a U.S.best t ime to do i t . Incj .dental ly,the race hras not named for terry, but, af ter i t was over, i t was

Knickerbocker Knocks BackRecord . o . 3340:42 for 60 Kmby Stan \A/a6fon

While not a force in ul t rassince that 60 km win, Terrystaged a comeback of sorts.Free of in jury, and with 27straight weeks of 100+ mi les(and, notes Terry, "weight workto develop ny quads") he fel tready for a good race.

DeVoe held the lead withtwo more laps in the 36 minuterange, but, the fourth t imearound, Knickerbocker made astrong move, taking the leadwith a 35:52. Devoe was suf-fering a bit from stomach crampsand was unable to stay at the -

f ront . But Knickerbocker seemedto get stronger and smoother asthe race progressed. After 50 kmit was clear that he was not go-ing to be pressed, and with aspl i t of 3:04:05, he knew he hacla chance to regain the record heset four years ago. That recordhad been improved twice, by A1-1an Kir ik, and, th is past Januaryby Frank Bozanich, who loweredi t to 3:44:10 (see story else-where in th is issue). But Terrypushed himsel-f through the finallap, f in ishing in a new U.S.best of 3:40242 (5:55 pace). The f ie ld included many old-t imers on the N.Y.C. ul t ra scene, and al l seemed qui te pleased atKnlckerbockerrs return to form.

Larry Fr iedmanrs steadyrace earned him a fine time togo along with his second placef in ish (6:15 pace), whi le 4l-year-o1d Bob Van De Kief t ran anoteworthy 4:09. The l is t off in ishers read Li-ke a who's whoof east coast ul t ramarathoning, and i f Lhat wasnrt evident, i twas made clear at the awardsceremony. Race d.irector RichieInnamorato presided, and heseemed to know the ul t ra his-tory of each of the top 20 run-ners as well as they knew theroad through CentraL Park.

I t was no surpr ise to any-one that 45-year-old Sue Medagl iawas the f i rst woman. She was di-s-pleased at how much her timewas slowed by several p i t stops, but st i l I , i t 's the th i rd bestamong American vTomen. And therewas no surprise in the team com-pet i t ion ei ther, as the Mi l ] roseteam, Knj-ckerbocker, Devoe andBi lL Hart , won easi ly.

At the awards ceremony,Al lan Kir ik was presented withthe NYRRCTS Ul- t ra Runner of theYear Award for 1980. Highl ightsof the year for Kir ik included astrong second place f in ish inthe London-Br ighton 54 mi1er, asuper- fast 6:37254 for f00 km(6:24 pace), and a sub f ive houref for t for 50 mi les in windycondi t ions at Copper Harbor, Mich.
