What is Ultra3?What is Ultra3?

Announced in September 1998 by the SCSI Trade Association

Wide industry support (including Mylex):"Mylex is pleased to be an active participant in the

STA's effort to advance SCSI's capabilities," said Eric Herzog, Mylex vice president of market development. "We're confident that Ultra3 SCSI's dramatic improvements in performance, manageability and flexibility will be well-received by the marketplace, and we look forward to incorporating this new technology into our mid-range and high-end RAID controller product families."

Outlined in specification standard SCSI SPI-3 Next Generation of Ultra SCSI

What is Ultra3?What is Ultra3?

Fully backward compatible with Ultra2 LVD No change to cable, backplane, terminator infrastructure

A change in all this infrastructure WAS necessary when going from Ultra 1 to Ultra2 but is NOT necessary when going from Ultra2 to Ultra3

Same cable, backplane, terminator infrastructure for Ultra3 and Ultra2

Compatible with Pre-Ultra SCSI also Protects investment in SCSI and moves interface

forward

Ultra 160/m announced as a subset of Ultra3 by Quantum and others (including Mylex) in September 1998:

"Mylex is committed to providing the latest in leading edge RAID technology to its OEM, distributor, and reseller partners. With Ultra 160/m, Mylex will continue to offer our customers the highest levels of performance, reliability, and compatibility. At the same time, Mylex's customers will be protecting their investment in legacy SCSI technology. As the industry moves forward with Ultra 160/m, Mylex will be right there."

Double Edge ClockingDouble Edge Clocking

Double edge clocking - transition clocking doubles data throughput to 160 megabytes per second

Sends two pieces of data per clock pulse instead of one, thereby doubling the throughput without increasing the interface clock rate

8PP320299.ppt

CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check)CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check)

Cyclic redundancy check will improve data-transmission reliability via an enhanced error-catching scheme

Extra data protection for marginal cable plants, and external devices. Best way to ensure data protection during hot plugging. Same proven CRC used by FDDI, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel

detects:

All single bit errors All double bit errors, All odd number of errors All burst errors up to 32-bits long Has a ~2-32 rate of undetected random error patterns

Domain ValidationDomain Validation

Domain validation detects the configuration of the SCSI bus and automatically tests and adjusts the SCSI bus transfer rate to optimize interoperability

Intelligently tests the network before completing negotiation If some part of the network is unable to operate at requested speed,

testing will discover this before putting customer data reliability at risk Reduces Total Cost of Ownership

Reducing service calls for unanticipated configuration problems Saves on call center support resources Helps alleviate end-user frustration by making drives add easy

PacketizationPacketization

Reduces protocol overhead and provides scaleable performance improvements with speed

Provides faster transfer of command and status information and the ability to transfer multiple commands and multiple threads of data per connection cycle

Commands, messages, and status are all sent at data rate speeds

Transfers can be streamed within a connection

Packet structure is similar to Fibre Channel

11PP320299.ppt

QAS (Quick Arbitration QAS (Quick Arbitration Select)Select)

Provides faster arbitration to reduce disconnect and reconnect time on the SCSI bus

Faster arbitration than today’s
