THE ULTIMIT JOURNEY
THE ULTIMIT LEARNINGS
• Females take health and safety a lot more seriously• More focused on detail and ensuring the procedures are followed correctly
• New guidelines required• Wearing underwire bras around live wires
• Safety risks when women became pregnant
• Having toilet facilities available in remote locations
• Sourcing safety equipment to fit smaller frames
• Fitness required due to type of work, rough terrain and weather conditions
• fitness to enjoy job through eating better and other activity like gym work
• Physical strength to do the job was less important, technique was more critical
THE ULTIMIT LEARNINGS
• In early stages of the project - male workers protected the women from having to perform some of the more physical tasks.
• Over time, this did no-one any favours
• Working consistently with the same group of people • important for trainees in establishing good team relationships and consistent
expectations.
• General management were very supportive of change• On the ground, women continued to face negative perceptions.• Some trainees confronted it head on,• Other trainees “put their head down” and ignored it.
• A mentor - to help guide trainees expectations around their own and others behaviours.
• High visibility of the project and the resultant attention• Perceptions of favouritism and making the trainees stand apart from some of their
colleagues.
