EM Committee MeetingThe minutes of the last divisional committee meeting, which took place on 3rd May 2008 are detailed at the end of this newsletter, see page 9.

Surrey Open Weightlifting ChampionshipsStaged in Woking on Sunday 18th May, the William de Ferrers Olympic Weightlifting Club was represented by 5 competitors at this event. As this was an open event, our boys had to lift against some of the top under 19 year-olds in Britain.

In the under 78 kilo category, Sam Pugh took 4th place and James Moore took 3rd. These were good performances for competitors whose commitments to other activities limit their weekly training time.

In the under 50 kilo category, Dominic Simmons won the title – a justified accolade for a lad who never misses training and whose bravery following a mid-competition injury really impressed the audience.

David Mowat won the over 105 kilo title. Yet another win for a student who has now been training for

almost 2 years and who currently holds the UK Clean and Jerk title.

Finally Sirichai Cox won the under 56 kilo title with a very impressive display of technical ability and immense power. Once again the UK’s top coaches commented on his potential to become a top performer.

Thanks are again due to to Mr.Ayling for supporting us and also to Mr.Cox for his help, support and photographic skills.

Mr.S.Braxton.Olympic Weightlifting Coach.

Managers report - World Bench Press, Masters, 2008Venue: Dom Sportu, Bratislava, SlovakiaThe event organisation was the usual high standards of the IPF, however the venue itself was effective for the athlete but very underwhelming for the spectators. Some of the British team stayed at the venue, and the other official hotel, and others in a local hotel, hotel accommodation was adequate at best.

In all 14 lifters were part of the team and lifted, one of whom (Gavin Walker) also participated as referee. In addition Ian Kinghorn attended as team manager but due to illness did not lift, and more than 10 others travelled with the team to provide support and encouragement.

Overall there were some notable performances, including Cliff Haynes (2nd Masters 1 at 67.5kg) and Alex Lee (3rd Masters 3 at 75kg). Others performed to capability, although we unfortunately had 4 lifters who failed to get a lift registered.

Masters 1: team position 10th

Cliff Haynes: lifted 155kg to finish 2nd in the 67.5kg class, missing the gold on bodyweight only Gary Prater: failed to register a lift Keith Arkle: lifted 210kg to finish 9th in the 90kg class

Masters 2: team position 6th

Derek Fender: lifted 135kg to finish in 5th place in the 67.5kg class Martin Flett: lifted 192.5kg to finish 8th in the 100kg class David Brooks: lifted 192.5kg to finish 6th in the 110kg class Steve DeMeis: failed to register a lift Julian Massey: lifted 182.5kg to finish 6th in the 125kg class Allan Hulme: lifted 215kg to finish 4th in the 125kg class

Masters 3: team position11th

Alexander Lee: lifted 152.5kg in the 75kg class to finish in 3rd place Mike Edwards: failed to register a lift William MacFadyen: failed to register a lift Norman Anderson: lifted 145kg in the 100kg class finishing in 7th place, but 4th in the M4 competition Gavin Walker: lifted 117.5kg on 2nd lift in the 100kg class to finish in 9th place

Team manager: Ian Kinghorn

TECHNICAL COMMITTEE NEWS BULLETIN N0 3 2008 Referee Clinic At the time of writing  three official clinics have been held, one in conjunction with the Master's Bench Press Championships in Bratislava, one at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, and the other at the European Regional Championships in Frydek-Mistek Czechia.   Hanie Smith Technical Committee Representative for the African Region conducted the one in Slovakia, the one in Uzbekistan  conducted by Hiroyuki Ueno, Asian Region Chief Examiner.   The presentation was constructed by Morten  Novum Norway,  Our thanks to them for getting this important item off the mark, which must be attended by all International Referees, at least once within the next four years.  Twenty seven International Referees attended  clinics held in Bratislava, and Tashkent.   Referee

Registrar Goran Gunnarsson will display them on the IPF Website marked with a red asterisk.  I have no details as yet on the number who attended that in Frydek-Mistek Czechia. " One or two points " have been brought up regarding the content of the clinic.  These will be addressed in June with the Technical and Executive Committees. Titan  Logo  Titan has registered a logo entitled TORO which depicts a bull on the belts which they are having manufactured.  this " trade mark " does not need to be masked. Wraps THP Knee  THP letters have been replaced with a solid yellow line. Inzer ( wraps ) Knee and wrist wraps named TRUE BLACK have been added to the list of IPF Approved Equipment. Pro Wrist Straps Wrist and knees 2 XH and  3 XH   have been approved. New Referees The following have recently been examined and passed the Category Two. Jennifer Thompson  ( USA )Bill Sindelar              ( USA )Mike Licciardi           ( USA )Sergio Centeno        ( Puerto Rico )Pradeep Kumar Srivastava  ( India )Sergey Menshenin               ( Kazakhstan )Munkhnasan Geleg              ( Mongolia )Munkh-Erdene Davaatseren  ( Mongolia )Konstantin  Khardin            ( Uzbekistan )Babu Rao                           ( India )Shahnavez Majid                ( Iran )Arastehfard Mahdi              ( Iran )Babaei Ghane Jamshid        ( Iran )Jaberi Davood                    ( Iran )Asadi Ali                            ( Iran )Mehreze                            ( Iran ) Thanks to Robert Keller and Hiroyuki Ueno ( Examiners ) and congratulations to our new input. Questions asked of the Technical committee Causes for disqualification of a Deadlift 5.  Stepping backward or forward although lateral movement of the feet or rocking of the feet between ball and heel is permitted. Q.  What exactly does lateral movement of the feet mean.A.  Lateral is to mean a sliding sideways movement of the feet or part/thereof i.e toe or heel.     This movement became legal following introduction of the Sumo style and when some platforms were, or, became somewhat slippery during the course     of the competition.  Of course, any excessive movement would result in the bar descending which would be cause for failure.  With non-slip carpet

Page 6: Ultimate Strength - East Midlands Powerlifting Associationeastmidspowerlifting.co.uk/documents/USMay2008.doc · Web viewPinda Singh finished best lifter in the equipped competition,

( now the only legal platform covering ) this movement of the feet should not occur. Rules for the disabled competing in IPF single lift Bench Press Championships - - - - - - They may be assisted to, and from the bench.  Assisted to mean " with the help of the coach or/and with use of crutches, sticks/canes or wheelchair "The rules of the competition  apply equally to that of the able bodied. Q.  Is the coach allowed to fit and tighten the belt.  Make whatever necessary adjustments the lifter feels comfortable with in regard to the shirt.  Place the lifters feet on     platform or blocks.  Position the lifter on the bench.A.  Not having encountered such lifters on the International Circuit, it is suggested that to allow all of these points would be going outside the bounds of the rules.     Prosthetic foot placement has been witnessed!     One does not wish to appear callous or discriminatory, but if the lifter is this severely disabled then perhaps the IPF is not the federation for him.  His needs would be more catered for by the IPC. ( International Paralympic Committee ) Lifters who need a wheel chair must make enquiries of the organiser.  Facilities may not be provided e.g. accommodation, position of ramp if platform is staged.  The one minute time allowance must also be taken into consideration especially should the lifter not be in the correct position to  immediately receive the start signal. Q.  What is the procedure should a lifter wish to move from e.g. 125kg to +125kg or visa versa and both groups weigh in at the same weigh in.   125kg  first.A.  If the lifter definitely knows he is going up he should tell the referees, keep his lot number and weigh in first in the second group.     On the other hand, should the lifter know he is moving down, he will be given the lowest of lot numbers and weigh in number one in the first group.     The reason why 1 or 2 lot numbers are left vacant.       If undecided on body weight or because of some type of  " gamesmanship " the lifter has this option.  Perhaps eventually the rule may change whereby the declared     weight at the Technical Meeting will need to be adhered to. John StephensonChairman IPF Technical Committee

East Midlands Bench Press Championship 2008This year’s event was once again held at Hamilton’s Fitness Centre in Colchester, and was held on 27 th April 2008. Again Stuart and the Hamilton’s crew did a great job, yet another well run and efficient competition.

EM Committee Meeting Minutes The East Midlands Weight Lifters Association.

Minutes of committee meeting held at Hitchin Weightlifting Club, Whitehorn Lane, Letchwroth, Herts on 3rd. May 2008 – meeting opened at 10.35 am

1/. Committee members present; Pete Weiss, Wally Pullum, Dave Tucker, Louise Pennell, Jenny Hunter, Allen Ottolangui, Stuart Hamilton, & Kevin Jane

2/. Apologies; Ian Kinghorn

3/. Matters arising from previous meeting (2/2/2008)i. Confirmation that the East Midlands Junior, Masters and Novice powerlifting championships will be

held at Yardley Gobion WLC on Saturday 26th July 2008.

4/. Competition entry forms; Jenny raised an issues regarding lifters turning up at weigh-ins without knowledge of what is currently acceptable in terms of lifting attire. As what is acceptable changes regularly the committee suggested that an up to date list of permissible clothing is sent out with competition entry forms and also made available on the divisional web site or by way of a link to the IPF site. However the onus regarding being informed of current rules remains the lifters responsibility.

5/. Records update; Jenny raised concern that there has not been a recent list of Divisional powerlifting records available. The secretary agreed to contact Ian Kinghorn to see if a list can be included in his next newsletter and also be posted on the Divisional web site.

6/. All England powerlifting; This event is to be held at Pitsford Sports Centre, Moulton College, Northampton on the 20/21st September 2008. As a Divisional event the host club (Farm WLC) would like as much support from the Division as possible. Having sufficient loaders and Officials being the main worry at this time. Jenny & Dave offered assistance with producing the relevant paperwork that will be required for the event. Stuart suggested that it might be helpful when asking for loaders if specific times or weight classes can be allocated to them. This idea was also later extended to include officials.

A discussion arose pertaining to the increased costs of travelling to venues, this being one main reason why many officials are not prepared to officiate at competitions. Several ideas were put forward such as increasing the present expenses allowance that can be applied for from the Division and building officials travel costs into competition budgets. No decision was reached and it was decided to discuss this matter as an item at our next meeting

7/. Competition equipment; Jenny reported that at the EM Bench press comp there was a need for more metal 25kg discs and that not everyone seemed to know that the Division has four of these currently held at the Farm WLC which could have been used.

Clubs staging events should not be put off from doing so due to having insufficient equipment and therefore the committee agreed to purchase further items that can for the time being will be stored at opposite ends of the division (Hamilton’s fitness centre, Colchester & the Farm WLC Northampton) and be available to any organiser who wishes to borrow them to stage a competition within the Division.

The committee agreed to buy another 4 x 25kg IPF recognised metal weights and 4 x 20kg discs plus two new powerlifting bars and collars (KJ to find prices) The items will be added to the Divisional inventory and remain the property of the Division. The clubs storing them will be responsible for them, make them available when necessary and return them if requested to the Divisional Secretary.

Wally will also look at the cost of plastic weightlifting discs as the ones which formerly stored at the Farm WLC are not for sale.

8/. Accounts; The treasurer reported that the account had altered little since our last meeting. Still looking into the possibility of putting the divisions funds into a higher interest account.

There was some discussion regarding the current financial state of BWLA with several e-mails, rumours and meetings taking place around the country. The secretary having been present at the last BWLA Executive meeting reported that there is some justification in members concerns and that the Executive committee are looking at ways to resolve the situation although this next Month could prove crucial.

The BWLA situation is partly due to the cost of contesting positive drug sample cases with two weightlifters (ANOTHER PENDING). The cost of pursuing these now grossly exceeding what was budgeted. It is therefore understandable that some powerlifting members of BWLA might on this point alone feel aggrieved as the Executive committee (minus any powerlifters) made the decision not to fund a team for this years senior European championship. As the East Midlands is virtually comprised of Powerlifters, seeing the Chief Executive of the Association and a team of ‘no hoper’s in terms of medals’ representing the country at the European Weightlifting championships stimulates more anxiety and concern regarding the future of Powerlifting. The committee were concerned regarding what might happen if BWLA is for what ever reason disbanded and as to what action or preparation they should be taking in case Powerlifting has to go it alone.

9/. AOB; i. Wally pointed out that there was little reference in the Divisional newsletter to weightlifting and that it

would not be difficult to include results which can be found on the internet. KJ to contact IKii. The Power Secretary had now missed four consecutive meetings and there had been a number of

lifters who had not received invites on time for the British Masters. It was accepted that much of this is because of illness but in fairness to members the work still needed to be done. The committee agreed that for the rest of this year Pete Weiss would take over this responsibility and the Secretary would notify the power secretary of this decision.

iii. It was suggested that where possible a list of competition nominations be posted on the web site for Divisional events.

iv. Job Descriptions; This was still an outstanding issue as some officers were not sure of their exact roles. It was therefore decided that each officer produces their own job description in draft for discussion at the next meeting, detailing what they think they are responsible for and what they are currently doing.

Date of next meeting Saturday 2nd AUGUST 2008 Hitchin WLC, Letchworth 10.30 am.

Meeting closed at 12.30pm.
