    COMMERCIAL AREA

The vibrant economic practices that are takingplace along the street of Asia-Afrika are being

seen as planning and design potentials in the

effort of revitalizing the area into one of the

most important commercial hub for Bandung.

By exploiting what are currently there, these

activities play important role in determining

a successful programming for the area. This

analysis tries to understand the complex con-

ditions, behavioral and preferences of the

commercial activities along the area and is

    OFFICES AND TRADES

As an important node for the city of Bandung, Jalan Asia-

Afrika holds strong position in the citys economic activities

and growth. Currently functioning as Bandungs business

district, the intensity of workers and urbanites that com-

mute and travel from and into the area does contribute to

the condition of the city. By analyzing current potentials of

these ofces and trading use, future intervention should

look upon the possibility of reorganization, reconguration

and reinterpretation of these important components in order

to integrate them smartly with the surrounding context and

Jalan Braga is one of Bandungs oldest and

well known street. It runs north to south and it

is only alittle more than a kilometre long

the name Jalan Braga (Dutch:Bragaweg) , ac-

cording to historian Haryoto Kunto, began to

be used in 1880s after the name of a stage

theatre group established here by the Resi-

dence Assistance Pieter Sijthoff on june 18,

    1882 .

The main activity during day along the street

Once it was a beautiful place surrounded by

Chinese-Dutch style shops . Now, only a few

are left. Nevertheless, its still the hub of com -

merce in Bandung. Plenty of textiles, batiks

and clothes in cheap and moderate prices are

available. . A vegetable market is in the base-

    ment.

    Alun Alun

Alun-alun in Bahasa Indonesia is basically atown square. In Java, you will generally nd a

mosque on one of the sides and the alun-alun

is a centre for numerous activities. The alun-

alun is now surrounded by shops and malls,

    frequently holding micro-business stalls and

for youngsters to picnic on the grounds and

    consume their recently purchased take-away

    (take-out) food.

    INTRODUCTION

    Development of promoting streetlife is

about the design of the built environment af-

fects peoples emotional wellbeing and quality

    of life.

There are two main interpretations of

Streets Life: Streets that residents nd easy and en-

joyable to use as they grow older intheir

    neighbourhoods, allowing them to contin-

ue living at home if they want to.

Streets that are inclusive they are easy

and enjoyable to use by all members of so-

    ciety, including older people.

The recommendations are set out with-

in the framework of six key design principles

    for street life :

    Familiarity

    Legibility

    Distinctiveness

    Accessibility

    Comfort

    Safety

    BENEFIT OF USING LOCAL STREET

    Freedom & Anatomy

    Dignity & Sense of Worth

Fresh Air & Exercise (Physical Health)

    Psycological Wellbeing & Enjoyment (Men-

    tal Health)

    FAMILIARITY

Aspects and factors of the outdoor

environment that help to create familiarity:

It is important for long-established streets

to be maintained and any change should

    be small-scale and incremental. En-

hancing the existing built environment is

preferable to large-scale re-developmentwhich is more likely to cause disorienta-

tion, confusion and anxiety in older people,

especially those who are less aware of

their environment and rely on constant re-

    inforcement.

In new developments the use of local

forms, styles and materials will help older

people to become familiar with the new

    neighbourhood.

    DESIGN FEATURES AND CHARACTERIS-

TICS OF FAMILIAR STREETS FOR LIFE

Familiar streetlife are likely to be places where:

Streets, open spaces and buildings are

    long established.

Any change is small scale and incremen-

    tal.

    New developments incorporate local

    forms, styles, colours and materials.

There is a hierarchy of street types, includ-

ing main streets, side streets, lanes and

    footpaths.

Places and buildings are in designs famil-

iar to or easily understood by older people.

    Architectural features and street furniture

are in designs familiar to or easily under-

    stood by older people.

Bandung street layout remain traditional layout & shown

    LEGIBILITY

Legibility refers to the extent to which

streets help people to understand where they

are and to identify which way they need to

go. Legible streets have an easy to under-

stand network of routes and junctions with

    simple,explicit signs and visible, unambiguous

    features.

    HOW LEGIBILITY AFFECTS END USERS

    OF THE OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT:

    Finding the way:

    maps and directions

    mental maps

    route planning

    signs

    landmarks and environmental fea-

    tures

    DESIGN FEATURES AND CHARACTERIS-

    TICS OF LEGIBLE STREETS LIFE

Legible Streets for Life are likely to have:

    A hierarchy of street types

Blocks laid out on an irregular grid based

on an adapted perimeter block pattern

Small street blocks of varying lengths from

    around 60100m

    Well-connected streets

Gently winding streets with open ended

bends and corners greater than 90

    Short, fairly narrow streets

    Forked, staggered and T-junctions rather

    than cross-roads

Places and buildings with clearly visible,

    obvious and unambiguous functions and

    entrances

Low walls, fences and hedges and openfencing separating private and public

    space

    Minimal signs giving simple, essential

    and unambiguous information at decision

    points

    Directional signs on single pointers

Locational signs for primary services posi-

    tioned perpendicular to the wall

Signs with large, realistic graphics and

symbols in clear colour contrast to the-

    background, generally with dark lettering

    on a light background

    Uniform grid pattern

Although the uniform grid provides a pattern of well-connected streets the layout of identical

streets and cross-roads can be as confusing as the lollipop pattern. The irregular grid pat -

tern also has small perimeter blocks and connected streets but creates a variety of block and

    street shapes.

Fairly narrow streets with gentle bends are generally more interesting

to walk along than wide, straight streets.

    JUNCTION

Forked, staggered and T-junctions reduce the num-

ber of routes to choose from and provide a focus

point at the end of the street.

    DISTINCTIVENESS

Distinctiveness relates to the extent to which streets give a clear image of where they are, what their

uses are and where they lead. Distinctive streets reect the local character of the area and have a variety of

    uses, built form,

features, colours and materials that give the streets and buildings their own identity within the overall charac-

    ter of the neighbourhood

HOW DISTINCTIVENESS AFFECTS END USERS OF THE OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT:Finding the way:

    ACCESSIBILITY

Accessibility refers to the extent to which streets enable handicapped people to reach, enter, use

and walk around places they need or wish to visit, regardless of any physical, sensory or mental impair-

ment. Accessible streets have local services and facilities, are connected to each other, have wide, at

    COMFORT

Comfort refers to the extent to which

streets enable people to visit places of their

choice without physical or mental discom-

posure and to enjoy being out of the house.

Comfortable streets are calm, welcoming and

pedestrian-friendly with the services and facili-
