Providing a unique Range of Capabilities

The ULTIMA X series of gas monitors is available with catalyticsensors for combustible gas and electrochemical sensors for toxic and oxygen (ULTIMA XE) or infrared for combustible gas(ULTIMA XIR).

The state-of-the-art design provides ease of use and maintenanceand notably the XIR technology’s outstanding long term accuracyextends the calibration interval.

All ULTIMA X series monitors are protected by a rugged, explosionproof stainless steel enclosure and are suitable for indoor andoutdoor applications in virtually any industry including offshoreoperations.

The monitors can be deployed as stand-alone units, but also providea 4 to 20 mA output for connection to controllers. In addition, theULTIMA X³ range now supports ModBUS RTU communication withPLC, DCS or other control systems.

HighlightsSensor Change under PowerMSA’s patented sensor design allows for quickand easy sensor changes in the field, even inhazardous areas (catalytic andelectrochemical sensors).

Interchangeable Smart SensorsPre-calibrated sensor modules are ready forinstallation out of the box. No tools areneeded to mount them in the field. Sensorchanges are recognised, signalled on thedisplay and indicated by the LEDs (catalyticand electrochemical sensors).

Versatile DisplayThe liquid crystal display alternates betweengas concentration and gas type, and featuresscrolling text diagnostic indications.

Unified Hardware DesignA single device with three sensing options:catalytic, electrochemical and infraredabsorption. The ULTIMA X series with unifiedsingle board electronics marks the state-of-the-art in monitoring combustible and toxicgases and oxygen.

Onboard LEDs and RelaysOptional “quick check” LEDs at the displayunit provide system condition indications at aglance, even from a distance. Four optionalfield-programmable relays provide threelevels of alarm and fault output.

ULTIMA X³In addition to all thebenefits of the ULTIMA Xseries, X³ gas monitorshave digitalcommunicationcapabilities and featureup to three sensors at thesame time at a singledevice.

Installation and OperationAllowing for variable sensor placement, ULTIMA X series gas monitors havemultiple enclosure entries for left, right or bottom wiring. The monitors arealso suitable for remote sensing applications, with up to 15 m betweensensor and electronics.

The modular design allows for pre-installation and wiring of the mainenclosure at early stages of site construction. Main electronics and calibratedsensors can be easily added at commissioning to reduce risk of loss ordamage and maximise sensor life.

ULTIMA X catalytic and toxic “Smart Sensor” modules store all calibrationdata internally, allowing convenient sensor presetting and calibration in theworkshop. Calibration in the field is also possible, e.g. if required byregulations. No tools are needed for connecting or disconnecting sensormodules, and power to the monitor can remain on.

ULTIMA X IR TechnologyAn electronically modulated source of infrared energy and twodetectors convert the infrared energy into electrical signals. Eachdetector is sensitive to a different range of wavelengths in theinfrared spectrum. The source emission is directed through awindow in the main enclosure into an open vol ume. A mirror, protected by a sec ond window, directs the energy back into themain enclosure and onto the detectors. The presence of acombustible gas in the open volume will reduce the intensity of thesource emission reaching the detector, but not the intensity of thesource emission reaching the reference detector. The microprocessormonitors the ratio of these two signals and correlates this to a % LELcombustible reading.

Digital Data Transfer and up to 3 Sensors per MonitorThe ULTIMA X³ has all the benefits of the ULTIMA X series and is also capable of digitalcommunication. A maximum of 31 ULTIMA X³ transmitters can be connected to the same line viaModBUS RTU. Since ULTIMA X³ units can be equipped with up to 3 sensors each, 93 sensors in all canshare a single signal line. The wiring effort is minimal.

About MSA Over 100 years of experience and capability incomprehensive safety solutions have madeMSA a modern and forward-looking companyfor the protection of people, facilities, and theenvironment. MSA is one of the few suppliersof fixed gas and flame detection (FGFD)measurement technology that develops andmanufactures a complete range of productsand integrates them into safety solutions.

With the acquisition of General Monitors inSeptember 2010, the MSA FGFD productportfolio expanded even further. As twounmatched experts in gas and flamedetection joined forces, we are proving thatthe right mix of durable products andinnovative technology can increase safetywhile driving operational efficiency.

Together MSA and General Monitors have thewidest range of sensing technologies for gasand flame detection. We can create solutionsthat will not only provide worker safety andprotect facilities, but will also decrease overallcost of ownership. While our customers stillhave access to the great products and servicethat they have come to rely on in the past, they now have access to so much more:superior service, improved support, a widerrange of technology, and unique solutionsenhanced by the combined strength of MSAand General Monitors.
