NB This is the most difficult tune in the
book, using the widest range of chords here.
Many carol books seem a little too fussy for effective idiomatic harmony on fretted instruments.
A reason is that they are generally based on organ or piano editions of the tunes.
A good example of a suitably harmonized original melody is 'Silent Night' (included here).
This was written for the guitar especially for an occasion when the organ in the church had broken
down...or so the legend has it. Joseph Mohr was an assistant pastor who played the guitar and it
could be that he asked the composer and pastor Franz Gruber to help him write a Christmas tune
that could be accompanied by guitar. The result: an original melody with the charm of an Austrian
folk tune. Its chord changes are simple, pure, beautiful and very appropriate.
Arrangements in this book are based upon this style: interesting enough, with minimal punctuation
in the text to help an uncluttered look. In some cases, harmonizing a tune with just one chord is
effective and, in the case of Good King Wenceslas, very much in keeping with the tune's origins.
When similar arrangements for guitar were first published in 2002, in two volumes, they sold out
very quickly. The single volume reissue was requested by many musicians, students and tutors.
Based upon this successful formula, here are arrangements for ukulele.
We wish you a Merry Christmas in G

16th century Spring carol
This works well with a simple G5
(G 'power chord) bare fifth drone
throughout, probably more in
keeping with the tune's early origins.
