March 2015, Page 1 March 2015 February 7th was the club’s annual workday. Organized by Larry Koenig and David Ada- musko, this was the best attended volunteer days yet. Over 40 people arrived to help out. Members, guests, and prospective members got a lot done, to say the least. Here’s a list of most of the things that we accomplished: All of the chairs in the clubhouse were cleaned with a pressure washer. The BBQ grill/smoker was cleaned out and new burners ordered. Damaged planks were replaced on the main dock. New piling caps were put on all the dock pilings. New GFI electrical outlets were installed where needed on the main dock. A load of sand was spread on the beach. The floor of the shower was regrouted. A new wooden deck was installed at the back of the cottage. A special faucet was installed to provide water to the steam table. The sail loft was cleaned out and reorganized. All the shrubbery was trimmed and the trimmings hauled away. A new Jamaica Caper hedge was planted in front of the clubhouse. Kitchen shelves were cleaned and outdated food items were discarded. (continued on page 2) UKSC Annual Workday a Great Success! Buccaneer Blast

Held February 28th and March 1st this regatta was THE youth sailing event of the year for the Up-per Keys Sailing Club. It drew a record 132 young Optimist and Laser sailors from 10 different Flor-ida yacht clubs. It was the picture perfect regatta weekend as steady winds offered optimal racing conditions for the young competitors. Of the participants there were 11 lasers, 62 Optis in green fleet and 59 Optis in the Red, White Blue fleet. This meant that there were three separate race committees running three separate races at the same time, all with their own committee boats, coach boats, mark boats and spectator boats. All these boats took up almost the whole bay and presented a fantastic spectacle. Thanks to all the volunteers who were race committee, kitchen helpers, parking czars, and cleanup crews. Proceeds from the event benefited the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program, a Florida 501 (c) (3) non profit organization which is part of the Upper Keys Sailing Club. Rosa Lamela

UKSC Yard Sale Saturday, March 28th

Don’t forget our UKSC Yard Sale! We are looking for donations of items to sell, and members to help us. Bring your saleable items to the club sometime during the week of March 23. We will begin organizing items on Wednesday, March 25. We need volunteers to help with the organizing and pricing of the items We also need folks to help set up tables and items during the day on Friday, March 27, and to help with the sales on Saturday. If you could come for just a few hours, we would be very grateful! Or be there all day! The more folks that volunteer, the lighter the work load for all.

Please contact Helen Koenig ( [email protected] ) if you can help during the week or on Saturday, or, sign up at the Club. If you would like to set up a table to sell your own items, the cost is $20, and you keep the proceeds. Speak to Commodore Sara Kahler, or Rear Commodore Larry Koenig to reserve a table. All proceeds from the yard sale will go to the dock fund, to help pay off the dock mortgage.

Club Burgee Exchange

The parents of member Bruce Dunnett , visiting from the UK, brought burgees from the Thorney Island Sail-ing Club and the Chichester Yacht Club, to be ex-changed for our very own UKSC burgee. The Thorney Island Sailing Club has been active since 1946 when it was started with a small, wooden hut and six 14 ft. sailing dinghies. It is still an active club serv-ing island residents. The Chichester Yacht Club, also located on Chichester harbor in southern England, is a much larger club with a bar and restaurant and a goal of 1000 members. It

welcomes sailors and motor-boaters. A big thank you to Nick and Jan Dunnett for carrying these bur-gees so many miles for us!

Force Five Midwinter Race Week and Championship Regatta

Sailors from around the whole US escaped the cold north to attend races at the Upper Keys Sailing Club, and a fun rendezvous to Nest Key. They came from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Connecticut, North Carolina, Texas and California. Special thanks to Commodore Sara Kahler and Dockmasters, Sallie and Guy Lange who went be-yond their normal responsibilities to welcome and accommodate the Force Fivers. Thanks to PROs Alan & Kathy Hulbert and their race committee Bob and Barb Welsh, chase boat operators George Baisley and Steve Booth, who worked all races in challenging conditions in the small and wet Hobie. Other chase boat personnel included Dennis Kahler, Dave North and Pat McLaughlin. Thanks to Paco Calvet for the great shirts, hats and trophies. Fleet Captain Ginette Hughes was helpful en-suring that all club boats were staffed and operable. And of course thanks to Yolanda Trump for securing breakfast and lunch supplies along with set-up and clean-up, Larry Koenig for picking up supplies and Kim Hamilton for happy hour assistance.
